Today I share common errors that are made when executing a head level roundhouse kick. If you can critique your own kick and analyze/correct everything I cover in this video you should be able to improve your high kicks.
I hope everyone enjoys a virtual instruction. If you found the video helpful please like and sub 🙏

I was taught to shoot your arm towered their face while throwing the high kick. Possibly distracting them from the kick so they won't see it coming and protect your chin at the same time. I think it's a much better technique than swinging your arm down and leaving your face open.

You can also use it to frame or use it as a long guard. Sometimes I’ll throw a cross and it literally flows into a high kick. You still “swing” but your arm is higher. It may have less power, but it feels much better in sparring especially since I’m a shorter guy so my kicking range may be almost someone’s punching range.

Whether we post with the arm or swing depends a bit on whether we go for more safety or more power. Swinging down and opposite with the arm "thai style" instead of posting can add more torque when turning the hip (because we force the back shoulder into the kick with the swing motion), adding to the acceleration of the movement Both styles are valid for throwing any type of round kick, it really depends on what we're trying to achieve (and what our opponent's options for countering in the situation are).

At 1:30 one can see why Gabriel Varga is a true technician, martial artist and role model. To find a coach or mentor of this caliber (outstanding character, vast knowledge and skills) with an incredible ability to break down technique and teach is absolutely amazing. What a legend. Thanks again for yet another great video.

Coach Varga, you are amazing and invaluable by posting all your knowledge to youtube so often. I want to thank you for your contributions to all of us! I noticed you post very often; I don't want you to go on a sprint and run out of ideas for the future. I recommend youtube shorts or summary videos; in this way you satisfy your need to post but also can re-iterate your longer, older videos.

apparently according to martial mind, it's not a good idea to do that since your dominant hand/side should be where your power comes from, and if it is used as your lead hand/side, all that power won't be utilized.

halo coach. in taekwondo we do that pivot even for body round house kick. maybe the difference is that part of our feet to the head is the instep n we snap that kick. just like bwakaw switch kick. he is pivoting almost 90 degree

I really struggled with the foot part of this kick when I was learning it. I couldn't coordinate the lift -> twist -> land -> return with my foot, it seemed too complicated. So what I did was to simply stay on the ball of my foot for the entirety of the motion, so that way I never forget to turn and the twist naturally adjusts based on the amount of power I want to use.

Keep the weight on the ball of the foot, so even if your foot is flat on the floor you’re still kinda on the ball of your foot.

I think starting out with lower kicks, even thigh kicks for a few days/wks, in slow mo if needed, making sure the steps Gabriel is pointing out are done to a T. Slow and deliberate repetition is so good on so many levels, for many moves, gradually building up the speed. Thats not to say for a super new guy, that he shouldn't try to impress himself from time to time, with some speed, just that he should make sure the drill is focused on getting the moves and sequences down perfectly.

@XGracelessTarnishedX
@XGracelessTarnishedX 3 жыл бұрын
I'm a little confused. I didn't know that there was a bent knee/chambering or snapping at the knee with a Muay Thai style kick at all. I can see that you show it in a less drastic manner than a full bent/Karate style kick. But I was under the impression that Thai boxers leave the leg limp and whip it up there with their hips. Or I've seen some of them leave a slight bend at the knee all the way through, even on impact. Could leaving out this snap be a reason that people have so much trouble getting it up there? I've seen a lot of guys teach no chambering in thai kicks, so I'm just a bit confused on if there's a particular reason for the slight bending/snapping, and why you prefer this. Thanks for another great video! I OBSESS over the details in the mechanics of techniques, and have learned a lot from your content!

Hi Gabriel, I’ve heard that high kicks, particularly roundhouse kicks can be damaging to the hips and possibly lead to needing a hip replacement. Is there any truth to this and can anything be done to protect the hips? Thanks!
@GabrielVargaOfficial
@GabrielVargaOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think it’s the karate style high kicks that lead to that. I know 3 people who had the surgery and all where karate practitioners. I also think running takes its toll on the hips. High kicks and thousands of km running don’t seem to mix. I’ll try making an episode on the topic.
@kevinburkett9018

@@GabrielVargaOfficialThanks for the reply! I’m a karate practitioner who’s not flexible and not a very good kicker. I’d like to be able to do high kicks, but maybe it’s not worth all the effort if it would lead to long term joint damage.
