Interesting point about the role modern plays, and how that applied to WOTC. I wouldn't have the slightest bit of interest in vintage if my lasting memories were of putting it in my closet. Instead, there's emotional attachment of filling binders, trading at school, building decks, heading to hobby shops with friends and opening packs together. It's different for everyone but I would say a vast majority of my age range (I'm in my 30s) would feel the same. We all talk about how we wish we never opened up all those 1st Edition Neo packs or put that Dark Blastoise in a card saver instead of loose in a deck box. But truth is, we wouldn't care about it in the same way if we didn't enjoy them in that way. That's why I agree with you about some modern TCGs. They're Kickstarted with "investing" in mind, and little else.

Definitely some good points in the video. As someone who does invest some in modern ( I also have alot of fun in the hobby period) people are definitely lying about 10x in 2 year on anything chilling reign; However I do believe modern is very investable, but people need to realize you may have to hold for the long run. Modern will become vintage. There is a huge next generation of pokemon collectors that have come about through the whole pandemic era. Parents that loved pokemon as kids are sharing the hobby and playing the game with their kids. Pokemon is in a great spot and I strongly believe history will just continue to repeat itself. I think how many graded copies of this or that is kinda just irrelevant when it comes to investing in sealed product. People buy old and new products to open everyday to chase cards etc. But I believe the experience is the number one reason why this happens. I've always felt like pulling the chase card in a set is great and you complete that chase but ultimately I think the chase is more exciting than the result. People will open hundreds of packs to pull a chase card when they could have just went out and bought a near mint copy for far less. I think people miss that point alot.

The thing is, there's also a lot of other people holding for the long run. Unless there's another universal lock down in the future, these modern cards aren't going to reach the heights people think they will. You could look at the investments as a "safe" way of saving money for later. You also need to consider PayPal and eBay fees because unless you make 25% on anything, you're down. Even then, you're just back at square one with the cash you started on. Your geographical location also makes a big difference because in the UK the card market isn't as easy as US. Same as the retro game collecting. I've invested in modern slightly myself with a few ETBs but honestly, I wish I hadn't bothered.

Such a great topic. If everyone just stock piled wotc, noone would care about it today because not enough people would have had the experience to create memories and therefore future nostalgia. Wotc is expensive because it mostly got opened up. People everywhere are stockpiling sealed modern product right now. Its very unlikely that what we call modern today will ever catch up to wotc. Not until prices plummet, then everyone decides might as well open everything, only then will it start to increase in value. Just my opinion.

Great video, and you hit the most important point for me, which is that a lot more people are buying these products and holding on to them than they did in 1999 when it all began. So realistically, in 20 years you're going to be able to buy a lot more sealed modern product than you can find today for Base, Jungle, or Fossil sets. I would say that in 10 years time anyone that is anxiously holding on to these products for turning a profit is going to be dumping the products on the market. So we'll have periods where a race-to-the-bottom condition happens for some modern sets, and we see downward price trajectories before picking back up.

On the flip side of that argument... We have thousands more youtubers/streamers/box-breakers than during the 1999 collecting era, or even the 2009 era. I am in the camp that the heart of the hobby, whether you play, collected, or invest, will always be about the cards. People say sealed product is investable, which I won't argue because I think it is, but I only see it in a 10 year window. We are not in the quick flip investing since the Boom is on the decline. As far as ETBs, people always forget about the other costs there is to collecting said item. ETBs take up space. And that space adds up quick. It will also have a certain value, but its true value will be hindered when you do try to cash out the item and sell it. Unless you do it local, shipping and materials to ship it does have extra costs and does have effort. Now for me, I always love the cards and like to deal with the actual cards. For $40, I think I'd rather put my money on a card like the Marnie Promo. It goes for like $35. I believe Marnie is a more better character and arguably just as popular as Lillie from Sun & Moon. $250 for Lillie from Ultra Prism? Now I doubt Marnie due to it's high print will ever get to $250, but I wouldn't be surprised if it hit $100. But again, it is only speculation just like any Pokemon investment is.

If you go back to the previous Sun & Moon era, have those sets not gone up in value? Are you still finding Cosmic Eclipse booster boxes, Team Up booster boxes, Hidden Fates ETBs, or Shining Legends ETBs at msrp? If so, please let me know where. Sure, everything from an era isn't going to perform equally as great but that's where a little research helps. Do you think Evolving Skies and Brilliant Stars booster boxes will still be near msrp in 5 years? Take the top 20 cards from either of those sets and you'll have to spend $1,000+ to buy all of those singles. That's what sets Evolving Skies and Brilliant Stars apart. Chilling Reign has a terrible pull rate while Vivid Voltage and Darkness Ablaze are too top heavy. Those 3 will be far outpaced by Evolving Skies and Brilliant Stars.

@@LostLosty I believe he knows quite a bit about sealed products but I also believe he has ulterior motives which he will not divulge publicly. He specifically chooses Chilling Reign, Vivid Voltage, and Darkness Ablaze to make his point (3 somewhat underwhelming sets from the S&S era). When you look at sealed product like Cosmic Eclipse, Team Up, Hidden Fates, Shining Legends, Evolving Skies, and Brilliant Stars, it's easy to see that modern sealed product has a place. A little research will show you what sets to collect. This video exemplifies the vintage snob mentality and shows how they are willing to depict modern sealed collecting in a negative light to push their own agendas.

Truth be told, we had a black swan event coupled with astronomical growth that anything released pre 2020 wasn't printed enough for the current demand. The prices of anything released before lockdown went up because of that, modern product released before 2020 is not the same as modern product released after 2020. I'm not saying that no one should be investing in modern ok(churn and burn is very much alive and lucrative), but Pratte's point is absolutely valid when considering the fundamentals. The numbers looking good right now does not mean they will continue to look good for everything going forward. We are in a completely different Pokemon world, and alot has changed in the past 2 years to where it's a night and day difference.

Pokemon center exclusive ETBS will perform better than the normal etbs. Items that dont get reprints will do better, such as ultra premium collections. Sets such as Evolving skies will increase in value much better than something like Darkness ablaze. If rebel clash and steam siege can rise in value a bit, pretty much any set can. I dont bother buying all the other smaller tins, collection boxes, milk cartons, pokeballs etc I call those filler items with no real value other than maybe a decent promo card. except for something such as the Flareon/jolton/vaporeon vmax boxes, those I never once saw in stores. Theres no movement because they are still in rotation when they stop getting repinted youll see prices rise. Down the line when we get older the population will grow with it as well as our nostalgia theres also the thing with people deciding to open up product when they think theyre at a loss leaving less to be found in the market. Yeah theres no gain market for singles or graded slabs going up in the future but that also goes for vintage, too much of it out there wait till psa opens and prices crash for both. Look at sun and moon sealed its still going up and will keep doing so same with sword and shield specially when some sets and artwork are so much better in comparison. Id suggest for people to invest in the next Evolving skies reprint if youll even be able to get your hands on it as market manipulation is at its finest with that set with everyone holding product and demand not being met. I mean same thing happens with stock everyone holds and forces the price to go up significantly over time slowly but surely it gets the job done. Personally I purchased 39 Evolving skies booster boxes back when they were 104$ look at them now 🥶Im pretty sure if I hold on to them for 5 years ill get back a minimum 500 a box guaranteed.

I remember Base Set 1st Edition selling for less than 10k, Base Set for 800. Jungle 600 etc etc. Hell, Even Base Set Japanese no barcode boxes selling for 1200. But then the hyped died down a lot. We are now seeing prices come down on a lot of stuff and starting to balance out. Will we see that again in another 20 years? That is very hard to say. Of course you can cherry pick the chilling reigns that flop and ultimately don’t spike, but the same on the other side. Using your exact example of a champions path ETB not being rare and having the most graded zards. It's MSRP was $50 and is now pretty frequently selling for $100+. A 100% return in less than 2 years is substantially better than the S&P. If anyone is genuinely expecting a CP ETB to skyrocket and be able to 10x any time soon, then yea they are definitely misguided and need this advice, but hopefully those are very few and far between. How does "popularity before product" only apply to modern and not "vintage"? The same boom that lead to a 500k zard is also responsible for those evolutions boxes reaching $700+.

When I buy any sealed TCGs for investment I'm aiming for a 4X - 5X return in 10 years. If you average a 12% return year over year in stocks you'll 3X your money in 10 years with compound interest. Sure, collecting is one but it was playing the game with your friends and enjoying the literal PURPOSE. These days in American Schools you won’t see kids trading pokemon cards or playing on the cafeteria tables. And I’ll make a bold statement; half of American Kids and Adults who collect and invest in don’t even know how to play the literal game they are spending $200 - $500 to hold for the long term. In reality, so many more people are holding on to it when compared to Generations and it's still readily available. I'm a collector of pre-release cards, and even the early BW cards go for cheap because they're not scarce (still waiting for that Clefable PSA 10 to pop up, if ever!)
@hoila47182 жыл бұрын
Because they are not scarse? Bro who was buying B&W packs back in the days?... It's because that's very low demand for them imho. Better for us, niche collectors ❤️
@akushner112 жыл бұрын
@@hoila4718 I'm talking about pre-release promos. B&W pre-release promos are just as cheap as the SWSH ones, sometimes even cheaper from what I've seen. Sealed B&W is a different topic, but I was just referring to pre-release promos
@hoila47182 жыл бұрын
@@akushner11 yeah, I intended the same thing. Nobody was carrying about Pokémon packs, Promos or boxes back in B&W era and nowadays the Promos are very cheap because still today there isn't any demand for them

Celebrations WILL continue to rise, and quicker than just about any other set. Why? Because Pokemon won't be reprinting it. EVER. What is out there is all that is out there. What is opened will never be replenished. Those who know went big on Celebrations, even with people saying things like "It is everywhere, no one wants it", etc. Talk to me in three years when UPCs are $1k and regular ETBs are $400.
@akushner112 жыл бұрын
@@pokepixs1936 I agree in the longer term, I was talking about people thinking the standard ETBs will double in value in a year or two, which won't be the case. UPCs are obviously a different story as they were very scarce upon release, and were already selling way above MSRP. It still holds true though that more people are holding celebrations sealed product compared to Generations at release, and Generations did take a long time to actually show a significant jump in value

I think it's good people are atleast putting their money into something besides going out and wasting it. That's good, right?

No. Stop it. The champions path promo was a promo in a every etb. And guess what? The highest tier product was the etb, no bbs were made. Imagine giving every person that opened evolving skies a rayquava v, the population would be crazy

I don't get the "this is modern" logic. Id rather pick shit up now when its printed and at its all time low, than wait for X amount of years and its on the up. Everything is modern and turns into vintage lol if the point was to tell people, don't expect a big jump in price for 4,5,6,7 etc. years, of course.
@fathuddinfathy52002 жыл бұрын
Imagine there are 10000 collectors worldwide doing the same, they stocked up the modern X amount of boxes, all waited for the years and when the price gone up a bit they all dump the market at the same time. The only bet here is the demand is to outpace the freaking huge amount of supply 7 years later

I'm sorry, are modern investments supposed to pay off right away or something? Because I was under the impression that an investment is something you buy and hold onto for years until it stops being printed and starts going up in value? That's always how it works, it's why those cards that came out in the 90s are worth so much now! They were modern once, they weren't worth anything in 1997! Do people expect their fusion strike and battle styles cards to be worth 10 times as much not even a year after release??? If you're only seeking small short term gains on products that are new and still being printed that's not investing, it's scalping.
@RAM_C5 Жыл бұрын
This 100%. It doesn't even matter if it's popular set or not, with people opening sealed out of print means prices on sealed go up regardless. It's a long term investment but definitely an ROI.

investing in modern is totally possible, but you just gotta store it away for 15 years lol
@jackielife71452 жыл бұрын
No way, it took 20 years for the old ones to get to where it is now and thats the old wotc cards/boxes ..its not about the time too its about the supply and demand and expectations. Back then no one held onto the boxes and no one hoped it will go up, everyone opened it and had organic love towards it......NOWADAYS everything about pokemon cards is about money so everyone and their mothers are holding onto and its been massively printed to the ground. No way would it be the same it was before even in 30 years.
@jackielife71452 жыл бұрын
also one might as well invest in something else if it takes that long. Lets say it will 2x-3x in price in 15 years then what.... first you have to sell it then taxes will come and fee then there is inflation ...you are back to where you started or gained little... you might as well invest in stocks and real estates.

And there is zero guarantee that it will do what vintage did in that time span growth wise.

I agree, it's a risk just like everything else. There are also many more ways to invest for quicker returns. Patience is a virture though, and I love the hobby enough to hold on and store modern for the next 50 years (if i live that long). Who knows, stranger things have happened.
@jackielife71452 жыл бұрын
@@AlphaWasSpotted Yea if you like card then by all means go for it. I buy things I like too but to just invest in things just for money there are far better alternatives than this.

modern isn't really investment at this point... it's more or less for collectors.... I spent a lot of money to collect psa 9-10 alt art cards, and I honestly don't expect the value of those cards will explode like vintage. There are too many ppl to treat Pokemon as an investment, instead of a hobby :/ If you want to invest in Pokemon, invest in vintage.... or sealed boxes

Yeah I think there are numerous problems with modern investors and their mindsets - looking at a 3-5 year timeframe for deciding how popular something will be in the scale of what will likely be a human lifetime or more when talking about the full lifetime of Pokemon start to eventual finish. A smart modern investor buys and sells popularity as you mention - and long term they buy the oldest possible sets. It's about smart arbitrage and picking your products with actual forethought. This ain't your grandmas pokemon.
