I did cameras backwards. Started with mirrorless then bought a DSLR. A D700. An old high mileage D700. Then I added a second very low mileage D700. Because I enjoy the D700 experience so much. The weight, the buttons for everything, the optical viewfinder, the noise of the shutter, the way the RAW files look, the lenses you can get for it, everything about it is utterly wonderful. It feels so right and just picking it up gives me joy. Still have mirrorless and still use them, all of them have viewfinders because for me a camera without a viewfinder might as well be a phone.

Not exactly "backwards" but you just made me realise how much of a roller coaster my path of mains has been, haha. I went entry level fixed lens film, then Mavica, various point and shoot digitals, then interchangeable mirrorless for a decade, fairly standard path up until I got my first ever DSLR last year (old 5D for pocket change that I drooled over when it came out), now I've enjoyed using amazing old lenses with the optical viewfinder so much that I've realised I want to return to the SLR film cameras where these lenses once lived... It's all perfectly rational, lol...
@matthieuzglurg6015Ай бұрын
as a D700 user myself (that also started with mirrorless and bought a D700 later), I would recommend you take a look at the D600. The image quality you get out of it is still up to modern standards (full frame 24MP, really nice high ISO, absurd dynamic range), but it still has that sort of nice tones to it that you only find in older cameras (especially the D700). It's not as nice as the old guy color-wise, but it's pretty close. And you benefit from a lower weight for when it's needed. I shoot a D700 and D600 in tandem, D600 when the DR is needed or if I want to crop, D700 when I want to have the most accurate focusing possible and if I know the colors will pop and it works like a charm. Those old tanky Nikon DSLRs are simply a joy to shoot,a nd the D700 is such a nice camera, I could sell every other camera I own, only keep this one and not be bothered one bit.

It's compact , non intimidating, it packs a (good) full frame sensor and a beast of a lens. i love this tiny battery sucker monster. The reason I comment here is because channels like yours are the ones photographers should be watching, and not the "all about gear" channels we already know. I can read the camera specs online, what I really want is to know if it does what I need it to do. Niche. Thanks! Subscribed.

A big part of this is the massive reliance on post-production (i.e. Lightroom). So many people throw all hardware character out the window after blowing up the files in Lightroom, fighting the camera hardware rather than embracing it. I laugh when I hear about colour science and character when the photo on the screen has been manipulated and slathered with presets and HSL. No wonder hardware starts to feel anonymous.
@jimizellАй бұрын
This is an interesting take. In the push for "perfection" optically and in the sensor, modern photography gear has become more homogenous than not in terms of output. Great for consistency, not so much for unique flavor. It's probably why people still wax poetic about CCD sensors, the original Canon 5D, Fujifilm SuperCCD, etc.
@pxperimenterАй бұрын
What you think is the "hardware character" of your camera is actually just its JPEG engine = its internal raw conversion software... (which, compared to Lightroom and other desktop software, is simplistic and produces worse results in color, detail and dynamic range because it has to run on the computationally very limited chip hardware of the camera). The actual hardware character of your camera lies in its sensor and the raw file preserving its unprocessed data.
@nickthaskaterАй бұрын
@pxperimenter I'm not talking about jpg but thanks for trying to sound intelligent. I'm talking about the sensor and lenses and the various "tunes" within that system that each OEM implements.
@pxperimenterАй бұрын
@nickthaskater Thanks for the unfriendly response. Just to reinstill some logic here: Unless you are relying, to quote your original post, on post-production (in Lightroom or some other raw converter), you have no choice but to use JPEG, in which case what you call "hardware character" is the camera's internal JPEG processing. But once you shoot raw and convert it to JPEG with any program, the color science, denoising, debayering and all other parts of the image processing are no longer a matter of camera hardware/OEM, but controlled by the software, even if you just apply the default processing profile and don't tweak the image. Lenses have nothing to do with the camera itself, unless you buy a fixed lens model. And please enlighten the readers here about these mysterious "tunes"... There are none, except (to a rather unremarkable degree) in the filter stack before the sensor - and, of course, in the camera's internal processing pipeline aka JPEG engine...
@nickthaskaterАй бұрын
@pxperimenter my point was simply that photos are typically edited to extremes to where hardware is largely irrelevant. This isn't a point about simply converting raw to jpeg or shooting straight to jpeg. You're grossly over analyzing the point.

Another great vid, interesting -thoughtful. I suggest we need to remember that Pentax DNA is Ricoh. Specific niche camera for someone who gets that vibe. I am a GRiii user and I have more cameras, but the GRiii is the one that feels the most me. I am sure if you still want to shoot DSLR the Pentax cameras hit the spot, so to make a film camera was very brave, but actually quite them, understanding that their is everybody wanting to take pictures of their /cat/grandchildren /partner and they will use their phone, and the others. They get there are people for whom photographs are personal family snaps on their phone, and people for whom photographing the mundane family life is an expression of self on a Ricoh Gr. I will not buy the Pentax 17 but I get they are aiming for a younger audience for whom analogue is creating a tangible feelable thing. I have no gripe against Sony or Canon etc. but they just want to sell great cameras to enthusiasts, the RX doesn’t meet the “max sales to as many enthusiasts who are a grey lump of geeks who want the best tech now”. So Sony etc will not dip their toes back in unless they see a huge market. Today Fuji has worked out what a great camera for the masses is and is mining that seam. I suspect OMS are not as foolish as people think, they worked out a market and are working it, I am not that market but still like my OM5, but don’t expect a new Pen F. Cameras are going niche. The niche who want the most mega pixels and tech are one niche, Fuji currently are dominating another niche, stylish, fun, lifestyle etc. But I think that is what we have and unless Nikon, Cannon, Sony find their camera geek mega pixel niche is too small they will back their current horses.

I once asked a Nikon ambassador if he would approve a last F-mount camera for a niche market, the Nikon photographer who has invested in a lot of F-mount lenses with today’s Z-camera manual focusing technology but in a f-mount body. Not a Zf with a Z-mount and a horrific huge adapter but an actual f-mount body with mirrorless tech. He argued that mirrorless have to be ticker due to the mirrorless technology, but my D810 had live-view, which is essentially mirrorless so it can be done. It would be a gift to all the Nikon die-hards. It could be ideal for them and also for the latest hot trend of street photographers who want something small with small lenses.

Let’s be honest, we hit fantastic image quality from digital cameras 20 years ago…. The Canon 5D or Nikon D700 are still fantastic today. All we’re really seeing now are incremental changes in spec, but broadly speaking, unless you’re pushing the super high megapixel cameras, imagine quality hasn’t improved massively… just things like focus response, or other AI features designed to improve the capture of an image. Cameras are more and more like computers. I think there’s a reason there’s been a resurgence and interest in older cameras, particularly the early DSLR’s…. I purchased the Canon 5D Classic… it’s a breath of fresh air. It’s just takes photos, and bloody good ones at that. If your cameras are operating and feeling more like computers or phones even, then any change isn’t really going to feel different or refreshing as we have on us every day a pocket computer, or our computer at work. We’re swamped with tech even when we go shopping or park the car. It’s all very draining and tiresome.

Think that depends upon lens and sensor size as well. Had an Olympus 3MP and a Fui 6MP. Then I bought a Canon 600D 18MP + Tamron EF-S 18-270. Huge improvement. Loved it. Tested an RP + RF 24-240 two years ago. Another quantum leap. Full frame, mirrorless and in camera lens corrections for jpeg probably main reasons. Bought it. A 10MP cut from that @ 240mm was same image size and better than the 18PM at 270 (400 equiv full image). But do agree increasing MP no longer guarantees massive improvements.

@@mikafoxx2717 Of course. That Olympus RRP was $AUD2,000. I paid about $AUD1,200 circa 2004. Has x10 optical zoom (rare back then) 3MP. Oh so slow delay on acting. I took some pics of jumping crocs in the NT. Had to click as soon as they broke the water to get a full length jump. I still have it. The Fuji was mirrorless 6MP with fixed optical zoom. There was debate about whether it was genuine 6 MP. Think it was a 3MP sensor but used the sensor twice to obtain 6MP. Much better than the Olympus. Still have it. Thought it might be a good starter hand me down to the grandkids. Nup - I didn't count in iPhones getting so good and them getting them so young! Had a photo taken on board the Oasis (RCL). Loved the ship and the photo. Took it into my camera shop and said I wanted a camera which could do the same. Funnily the staff in the shop debated whether it was done on FF or APS-C! That was in 2012. We are STILL debating FF v APS-C! Ended up buying 600D 18MP + Tamron EF-S 18-270. Loved that for 10 years. Moved onto RP + RF24-240. Now love that. I did some comparison tests before I bought. The RP 26MP FF @240 and cropped was better than a full image on the 600D APS-C 18MP @270! Yes, there are now a lot of second hand mirrored bodies cheap. Sort of 'nothing wrong with them'. Sort of nothing wrong with my grandfather's folding brownie, my Kodak Retinette and my Ricoh SLR. (Forget my Kodak Instamatic 204. Rubbish.) Composition is the critical factor. But I missed the advantages of the Fuji mirrored and glad to get them back with the RP. Just on weight alone. My 600D + Tamron 18-270 was about 1.1Kg. I was Ok with that. My RP + RF24-240 comes in at about 1.2kg! It feels lighter because it's shorter and smaller. FF in mirrored would have been about 2kg and about double the price or more because of the extra glass needed. By the way I solved my FF v APS-C. The test out fixed it. What I had v what I could get rather than new v new. Nikon zoom stopped at 200 and was a little dearer. I was used to Canon so stuck with them. This year I added R50 + RF100-400! Nothing like overload for the odd long reach! Interchangeable batteries and lenses!

I’ve only realised when I recently restarted photography. I shoot videos now on a Sony FX30 and I’m loving it. One day I had a mate ask me if I could do a photoshoot of his motorcycle. I only had a Fujifilm XT2 with a 23mm on it, which I used as an ‘out and about’ camera, but I accepted it and did it for him. Once I edited the RAW files, that’s where I realised. I’m shooting on such an old-ish camera but the quality is insane. If someone else had gone for that photoshoot with an XT2 with the same results I had, I would say that he is lying. That also has translated to my video work. When I got the FX30, i was still thinking of an upgrade to an FX3 or the next gen FX3. But now come to think of it, if the XT2 can match a high end camera, then an FX30 definitely can. 100% keeping both the XT2 and FX30 for photo and video respectively.

This video especially at 1:03 echos one of my sayings - "the photographer makes the photo, the camera is the tool to capture it" I'm truly a huge believer in the concept of if a person with a high-end camera can't take a good photo what's the point in them having new fancy camera if a photographer can take a good photo with a lower end or older camera then they can do photography. At the end of the day a camera is just a tool to capture a moment and as a photographer it's your job to make that photo what it is that's why if ever I upgrade a camera buy a new lens it's to experiment with a new piece of glass try a different style or it's a strategical upgrade to replace something broken something old that's not to say I can't experiment and feel like what I've bought isn't worth my money or it feels like a step back because it ultimately can but as a tool if I see the value in upgrading then I will and I'm at this point in my photography journey after the 14 years of doing so I'm at this point where I don't feel like I need to upgrade or get a new camera yeah new lens would be great vintage glass you know try different cool effects new filters but cameras nowadays really the big difference for me is it's only a little bit better at low light than my 16 Mark 2 okay it's mirrorless and it has a higher frame rate cool do I need it no.

My experience has been totally different. I went from the Nikon D200 to the D750 and then to the Z7. Each of these steps provided significant differences in image quality. At the end of the day megapixels do matter. I think the key to avoiding what you're talking about is not upgrading too soon. I only upgrade when there will be definite image and performance improvements.....unless something fails....like my D750 which got completely submerged in water. I used it for 3 or 4 years after that but then it had some reliability issues. The only time I felt like a step back was with the Z7's auto focus which is not as good as the D750. But the image quality difference is astonishing. This is in part due to the megapixels but in larger part due to the Nikon Z line of lenses. Still, that's and integral part of the upgrade. What is even more important to me is that which each upgrade I've have grown as a photographer and have produced better images. It is a popular fad on KZbin photography videos to downplay gear and megapixels. And that's fine. But in the end gear does matter. Not advocating for getting on the "latest thing" treadmill. But never underestimate the potential of a well-timed and well considered gear upgrade.
@mikafoxx271714 күн бұрын
The question is, does 45mp make a better photo for the same composition on a 4k monitor? No, it doesn't change a thing unless you print it 60" across or crop a micro 4/3 or less chunk out of it.
@bencompson14 күн бұрын
@@mikafoxx2717 Sure. I've got 19x13 inch prints from my 10 mp D200 that look as good now as they did then. But the ability to crop is a huge issue. I can crop a Z7 image by half and still get the same resolution as my D750. And that is not solely just a composition issue. That makes every lens you own that much more versatile. So when does that argument break down? 100 mp? 200 mp? The answer to that is what you can afford and how big a files you're willing to store. Otherwise, most major manufacturers are making lenses that will resolve beautifully at 100 mp. Win-win if you have the cash and the storage space. But that brings up another more important issue than megapixels and I mentioned it above. With the larger Z mount, Nikon has stepped up its game in terms of lens quality over the older F mount lenses. Nikon's and other 3rd party like Sigma's Z mount lenses are simply astonishing. I could not believe it. Do I need that level of quality over my D750 and the high end lenses I had with it? Probably not. But again, The D750 was dying and it was time to upgrade. The point being, upgrade when you need to or have to or when the gains are significant. Agree with the video that chasing every latest new camera and lens is silly. Unless that's what you enjoy. Which is fine too.

with film cameras, the film you loaded in them made all the difference too, and boy where there niche groups for every film stock. If digital cameras all look the same, it's because the sensors are basically all the same. And most are using Sony sensors (Canon being an exception) with bayer arrays. It starts getting interesting when other sensor technologies are used which impact how the color spectrum reacts and thus differentiates the look coming from different cameras. I wish we had digital cameras with swappable sensors that we could use for different purposes.

Just pointing and shooting and looking at things and freezing them. It would be cool to have a new shiny camera? Absolutely, but taking photo it’s not about the gear, it’s about what motives you on going out

Photographers want but won't pay for the direction anymore. Read the Sony semiconductor news page, you'll see they've been cooking up many sensor types. They could release a global sensor point n shoot at ~16mega pixels, but they won't cause a lot of people are too hung up on "it's not as good as xyz camera" or they're too busy paying for overpriced camera products. Your video is another reason why others dislike getting into the hobby. The perfectionist mentality after many iterations when most people can't crack a thousand different photos per day is an odd perspective. And yes, I do watch these videos to counter this off sentiment when the video maker has less than a few shots taken outside their household as their evidence to the argument.

I hate this video because of the implication that most people get a nifty fifty before learning manual exposure instead of spending 1 and a half years trying to afford any new gear at all and mastering their camera before buying any My suffering is not validated Nah jk nice vid

Certain used cameras have a high price because Japan is out of touch with what customers really want - that is why China now dominates interesting new lens offerings -cameras will be next

Hi George. The no mans land of this or that camera is akin to the incomplete requiem mass by Mozart. However, on a positive note, every day is a good day for cake. Laters...
