I've been an EV owner since December 2022 and am so pleased I decided to skip hybrid altogether and go straight from a fully petrol powered vehicle to a fully electric one. In 2024 I believe that this option is by far the best one for the majority of drivers - even those who always purchase second hand. In this video I explain why I think that and tackle the main arguments against going EV head on.
What about range anxiety? Don't the batteries die after a few years and end up in landfill? And what happens to the batteries anyway even if they last longer? And aren't they mined by children for no money? What about the huge cost of the cars in the first place and the non-existent charging infrastructure? Heard all that before? I do too, in what are supposed to be reputable news oulets. But they're not explaining the full picture, so let's instead look at some facts! Join me on a voyage of EV discovery!

Very creative and funny.Well done! I always think it is very funny and peculiar when someone talks to you about your EV like you have never owned or driven an ICE vehicle before. It is like this is the first and only car you have ever driven.I like to tell them how much it costs to charge from home and that filling up a gas car once would pay to charge Ariya for over a year.They usually have nothing much to say after that. Until the next one.Thx.

As always, funny and correct! Trouble is you’ll never convince the conspiracy nutters. The one that really annoys me is the EV catching fire story. It has been proven by many different studies that EV’s are much less likely to burst into flames, but it’s always first on the list for the naysayers😩

So true. I forget the stats for how many combustion vehicles burst into flames every year. Even if you pro-rata it to allow for there being fewer EVs on the road, the figures for ICE fires are still off the charts by comparison. I've already had one nutter post a comment with a spewing of FUD. The first of many I'm sure...

Thanks for all the misinformation :) had a laugh here. Just bought a new Audi, very happy!. The thing why a EV is worse than a ICE on fire, is that the thermal runway produce explosive gases like hydrogen. So while you can put out a fire on a ice car, the thermal runaway just continues without needing oxygen, producing hydrogen, that ignites from the heat of the battery. I had a mini cooper ev, had to sit at a public charger everyday. For me, time is more important than the cost of fuel. Actually, since the public charger was $0.7/kwh, it is cheaper with fuel anyway.

@TheRamblyChannel
@TheRamblyChannel 3 ай бұрын
The problem with that approach, is that it continues the use of fossil fuels at a point in our history where we need to be moving away from them as quickly as possible. It takes a co-ordinated approach to get there. Government and industry need to work together to make the charging experience where you are better. Here in the UK there's a new law that mandates that all chargers have to take contactless, immediately removing one of your complaints. The number of chargers here is also considerably greater than the number of petrol pumps and they're literally everywhere in many locations with the gaps being filled in all time. Again, government are stepping in to ensure that chargers have to legally meet certain up-time criteria so the relability will also improve fast. Where I am, for example, the many chargers are rarely broken. Hybrids are fossil fuel cars and are part of the problem, not part of the solution. There's no getting away from that.

I disagree on the 'EVs are fun to drive point'. I used to drive a BMW i3. It was easy to drive and quick off the mark, but fun... no not especially, at least not for driving enthusiasts. Yes they are fast (in a straight line up to about 50mph at least), but that doesn't make them fun. Bit like a microwave meal versus actual cooking for people who like cooking.
@TheRamblyChannel
@TheRamblyChannel 3 ай бұрын
We'll have to agree to disagree. I've never driven an i3. Did you have the pure EV version or the hybrid? If the latter than that entirely proves the point I was making about Hybrids being a compromise. Every EV I've driven has been way more fun than an ICE car. And with the pollution from all ICE and hybrid vehicles being so bad for human health and the planet there's simply no excuse to keep driving them. If anything the technical excellence of the EV design makes THEM the cooking and archaic ICE cars very much the terrible tasting "microwave" version.
@Hali88
@Hali88 3 ай бұрын
@@TheRamblyChannel Yeah it was one with a Range Extender but it didn't use its generator until their battery is low. So unless you are doing a very long journey or have forgotten to charge it, it doesn't need its engine. A very good car, especially around town, just not super fun or engaging to drive. As for 'no excuse to keep driving ICE cars': 1) There are nowhere near enough EVs now for everyone driver to have one, and there probably never will be given population growth and the resources needed to make large batteries. 2) Most people can't afford them yet. Some could afford to buy the older ones with short ranges but those cars wouldn't be able to do the long journeys that people need to do sometimes, so they aren't going to buy them until cars that can go 250 miles on a charge are widely available for under £10k. What I was trying to convey with the microwave analogy is that driving an EV is quick and easy, like a microwave, but it's not particularly engaging or fun. A microwave is useful to have and probably quite efficient, but I like having other cooking methods too. Ditto EVs.

@@Hali88 I covered every point you made in my video so I shouldn’t have to repeat them here. Your i3 wasn’t an EV it was a hybrid which is precisely my point - they are as bad as you say they are. You’re actually agreeing with what I said! Your other issues are outdated, I gave examples in the video. Your i3 was a hybrid. Have you ever driven a real EV?
@Hali88
@Hali88 3 ай бұрын
If you actually read my previous 2 comments, I didn't say it was bad, I'm not saying EVs are bad. They're great for pottering around town and short-medium journeys. They are great for reducing emissions and air pollution. What I am saying is that EVs not great drivers' cars. If you find them fun to drive, good for you. For me, the instant torque is fun but it's a 1 trick pony. And it uses up precious charge which in a petrol car would be a split second extra at the petrol station but in an EV is an extra 5 minutes of charging. So you end up not using it very often. EVs are fine for commuting and shopping but not for a blast on mountain roads. To say that the i3, a ground up purpose built lightweight EV with a carbon fibre reinforced plastic structure which could be ordered with an optional tiny 0.6L 2 cylinder range extender to charge the battery when you run out is not an EV is disingenuous. Technically, yes, the REx makes it a hybrid, just like, on the other end of the spectrum, a mild hybrid is a hybrid even though mild hybrids are basically ICE cars. But it drives just the same as the full EV i3. Once again, the i3 is a really good car, and one of the most stylish and fun EVs, but to drive... it's solid but not a car I loved doing B-road blasts in. The i3S is supposed to be slightly better for that kind of thing but I haven't driven one. My point about lack of EVs is not outdated. Globally, there are about 270 people per EV. In the UK it's about 68 people per EV. Even in 10, 15, 20 years there will be people not driving EVs because even if they want to, there just won't be enough EVs to go around. Yes you can order a new one, if you don't mind losing 30-50% of what you paid in a couple of years but that takes deep pockets. We need cheap simple hatchback EVs like the Zoe and Leaf from more manufacturers & cheap fast chargers in cities, towns & villages so that people who can't charge at home can own EVs hassle-free. At the moment many public chargers are a rip-off. Apologies for the essay!

Oh dear. Virtually every argument for EVs made in this video is flawed. If you consider the entire life of a full battery EV including manufacture and end of life disposal they are more damaging to the environment than a conventional petrol or diesel car. Yes , no emissions while you are operating it, not from the car anyway but where is you electricity coming from? You have to look at the whole picture. I agree that we should be developing an alternative to oil based fuels and EVs may be a useful stop-gap but we cannot sustain the damage that they do. We must direct our efforts to a sustainable option such as hydrogen and stop pushing EVs. Remember, the most environmentally friendly car you can drive is the one you've got at the moment.

Lifetime emissions: including mining, manufacturing, transport and power stations. In the UK and EV is a net positive after about 16k to 20k miles. In a coal power heavy country it's in the region of 60k miles. Hydrogen takes energy to split from water, it's an utter sod to keep contained and it makes anything it's in contact with brittle over time. Or you could just take the energy you'd use to split the hydrogen and stick it straight into a car.

And how is hydrogen produced Steve? 95% of it is produced using fossil fuels, mainly Natural Gas😂 They are trying to find cleaner ways of doing it, but while they are doing that my EV is charged using electricity generated by completely renewable sources, unlike your Hydrogen. Your Hydrogen car will also have a battery or two in it for brake regeneration, and it will also contain a highly pressurised container, which will undoubtedly have problems of its own. And your argument about battery disposal is also flawed. 95% of it is recyclable, and before that point it will have many many years of use, since the stories of battery degradation are wrong.

@@charliewhittaker3057 Hi Charlie thanks for your response. 95% of hydrogen may be produced by fossil fuels now, but it doesn’t have to be. Hydrogen can be produced from seawater using electricity which can be produced using wind power, both readily available offshore. Your EV may well be charged using electricity generated by completely renewable sources, but the batteries were not made using completely renewable sources. I’m not sure why a hydrogen powered vehicle would need a battery for brake regeneration please explain. There may be a few problems to overcome with high pressure containers for hydrogen, but I doubt that they are insurmountable. And my “argument about battery disposal”? I never mentioned battery disposal.
