Most of the time I drive my electric car round town and on country roads. I rarely go on the motorway. Recently I had to travel some distance to attend a meeting and this would involve quite a bit of time on motorways so I thought it would be a great opportunity to see how that would impact the efficiency of my vehicle.
I've had has high as 6.9 miles per kWh, although that's the exception rather than the rule. I'd say I generally get between 3.5 and 4 miles per kWh. But what will happen when I spend most of the day on motorways? Watch and find out!
This video also includes something brand new - something I've never attempted before. A Stand Up Comedy routine! Filmed in a virtual theatre (so basically read into that, I had no audience) I talk about my visit to an EV charging station and how Brexit has made hospitals such a good place to end up in. There may be some satire involved...

We towed with our ARIYA over the Easter break. We had fully loaded car with a full roof box, towing our 500kg trailer tent. We managed 3.0miles/kWh on the way there (lots of stop start traffic) and 3.2miles/kWh on the way home, that was around 50 motorway miles (cruise at 60mph) and 50 miles on A/B roads each way. We charged at home prior to departing (9p/kW) the charging at the campsite was free (we did pay for electric hookup on site but we would have paid for that if we were in an ICE car too) So 300miles traveled , 200 of them towing and the cost to me was circa £3. Fantastic.

Hi Andy, once again you’ve knocked it out of the park with the video👍🏻. Still got my Ariya while waiting for my new Skoda Enyaq. Not sure if I said this to you before but I made a trip last year from Cheshire to Padstow, 380 ish miles. Stopped a couple of times to charge with very few issues, arrived feeling fine, EV driving is definitely a more relaxed experience. It boils down to you having a mindset change when owning an EV. Not so much rush rush and a bit of forward planning and bobs your aunties live in lover! Keep up the top work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks Tony. So pleased you enjoyed the video. You're spot on, just a small amount of planning and it's no trouble driving an EV pretty much anywhere.

Thank you for taking me along on that pleasant trip. You grew up in a very nice place . It is so much quieter and calm when driving an electric. Nissan spent a good amount of time and effort getting the passenger compartment quiet.

Our long term average since buying our used ID.3 in March 2023 is 4 miles/kWh. We get more in the summer and less in the winter, just like ICE cars in fact. 🤔 We've recently returned from a 1,300 mile round trip to Orkney. This was during the cold, wet and very very windy June with temperatures on Orkney almost never getting into double figures and there being driving rain most days. Overall on the trip which was a lot of motorway and A road driving each way plus holiday miles in the cold, wet, windy conditions described, the car averaged 4.3 miles/kWh. Our personal effective range was 2 hours which was well within the real world range in time or distance of the ID.3. We did plug in if there was a charger at our stop just to top up whilst taking a break. There was never any inconvenience, waiting around or range anxiety. I really don't know what the Guff McNasty brigade get all wound up about. Perhaps it's their personal insecurities but I think that it's probably just clickbait grifting.

I can definitely relate to the nostalgia. Our family moved 300 miles away from where I grew up when I was 14. I've only been back a handful of times. The first time I returned (at the age of 20) all the houses and streets were tiny! The last time I went back, I brought my wife and two of my (at that time college-aged) children. The owners of our old house invited us in for a 'tour'. They had made some modifications and were thrilled as we walked through and I was able to describe how the house had originally looked. I'm notmore sure who was having more fun - me or the subsequent owners! At any rate, sorry to ramble on. Love your videos!

The owner saw us parked at the end of the driveway and after watching me pointing at the house for a few minutes, decided to walk out and ask what we were doing. I’m not sure I would have had the courage to knock on the door 😊. Probably would have sent my daughter instead!

BTW completely agree with your point on how much more relaxing / less stressful journeys are in an EV compared with an ICE. Same in our ID4. Think it is down to the relative lack of noise and vibration?

We own the Ariya with the larger battery and we have been to France plus regular trips from London to Weymouth, Poole and Eastbourne. It is reasonably efficient to the level you are experiencing - especially if the temperature is above 10 degrees. We get about 220 to 250 motorway miles between charge stops.

Thanks for the info. That looks very good range. I agree the ambient temperature makes a difference of course and it’s something I should’ve mentioned in the video

I run the entire length of the M27 at least once a week and have found that there is often a difference in power use between going west and coming back east all due to the prevailing wind! A second factor is rain water on the road. But the biggest factor is top speed, I tend to trade a few minutes for the extra range and save time by not needing to stop to charge often.
@TheRamblyChannel
@TheRamblyChannel 2 ай бұрын
All good points. Someone commented that range drops considerably once you hit 75mph but as that's illegal I'll never find out... 😂

What's your problem with them? Genuine question. I'd welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you may have. The growing EV owning community are a nice bunch! And 9 out of 10 people who switch say they'd never go back...

@@TheRamblyChannel I just feel I would lose too much automotive uitility by switching to EV. I'm someone who always needs the car to be ready to hit the road and do a long trip, night or day. The most I've driven in 24 hours for work was nearly 600 miles, charge stops would have been a job killer. One week in three I work night shifts, one weekend in three I'm on 48 hour callout. I have family a couple hundred miles away, who are elderly and may need me to go to help at the drop of the hat. When my Dad was passing away a few years ago I got a phonecall out of the blue saying "you had better hurry up and get here", I set off with half a tank of diesel and made the 240 mile trip with ease. I'm just waiting for more range I guess, but I don't know if I can live with slow home charging. The heavy weight for long range vehicles bothers me too

@@chrisbarron5861 That's interesting to read. I suspect you're not the only person with these kinds of perfecly understandable questions about the move to EV. It needs a change of mindset. When you get home, plug the car in to your home charger (you'd definitely need one). It takes a few seconds to plug in. When you go out, unplug and go. So much cheaper to run than an ICE car to the tune of hundreds of pounds per year. I've been through the same thing when my mother passed away and it required last minute hospital visits and the like, but I never had any problems as the car was always charged. Range isn't a problem if you plug in when you stop for a comfort break or to buy a coffee. Even 10 minutes on a rapid charger will chuck in a huge number of miles, especially if you buy an EV with an 800 volt architecture. Those long drives will feel a good deal nicer in a quiet EV without the noise and vibrations of a petrol or diesel engine. You raise fair points and you're not alone and it does require a leap of faith, but the large number of people who successfully switch shows how good it is. Just pick the correct car for your needs and off you go!

@@TheRamblyChannel Thanks.I currently enjoy 800 miles range, which is helpful on long trips with 2 or 3 drivers int he car sharing the driving, such as when we visit European F1 Grand Prix circuits, or music festivals hundreds of miles away. I really, absolutely hate spending any time in motorway services, I always seem to lose a significant amount of money for not many goods or services ! I understanding the charging idea but take 2 weeks ago as the example, when I arrived home with an empty fuel tank, within 45 minutes were setting off on a 250 mile drive. There is just no time for an EV to charge in that situation. I'm keeping an eye on it for now, but it's going to be a while before I'm happy with the range and utility. Even if I had to charge for 4 hours at home, that's a fifth of the day gone, that I can't use the car for

As a fellow EV owner, I hate to nitpick your attempts at electric car comedy but it lost some realism because you barely ever mentioned you had an electric car (like the one I drive), where most people that have them can't talk about anything else (their electric car, not mine -- although I do have one) - they talk about the smugness of EV drivers in the New York Times (That's a newspaper, like the kind that is delivered in a truck) here in the US, you see. I was interested to read that because I drive an electric car.

I was playing a character, not myself. The character probably doesn't have an electric car. It's very British humour so it might not be what you're used to if you're on the other side of the pond. 😊 But thanks for watching and sticking with it! 😊
