🙏TRANSCRIPT: Hi, everybody. My name is Gaia, from Life of Gaia. Today's video is going to be addressing a challenge that a lot of you seem to have, and a question that seems to come up repeatedly in different forums or different reviews, or just general discussions around smudging and the smudging practice.
And the question is this. A lot of you asked -- why is my smudge stick not burning, and why does it not stay lit? Or some of you asked my smudge stick lit perfectly the first time, but it won't stay lit the second. my smudge stick seems to go out while I'm busy smudging my house.
So I can see how this can be very frustrating and challenging for many of you. And so in today's video, I'd like to walk you through some tips on how to ensure that you're smudging practice is smooth and that your smudge stick stays lit. So let's get started.
You would have probably purchased a smudge stick that looks something like this, and you would use it for the first time. Now most people, including myself, are a little bit lazy, and I tend to use the smudge stick just like this as I'm going around my house.
However, believe it or not, there is actually another smudging ritual, and that is to take the bundle and to loosen it up, break off the leaves like this, and put them in a fireproof container, such as a smudge bowl or an abalone shell, and actually like the leaves inside the shell and walk through your home like this. Be careful, though, because sometimes the abalone shell can get very hot. So be mindful of that.
If you, however, like me, prefer to use the actual stick and walk through the house like this with a stick and maybe a feather, wafting the sent through your home and the smoke through your home to cleanse the energy and to purify, this is what we're going to do.
Most people take the stick like this and light it immediately. But this is in fact, not the correct way to do it. You should start off by loosening the top bundles of the leaves like this. Slightly loosen the stick and loosen some of the leaves like that. And then you'll see that it lights quickly because it creates airflow through the stick, just like that.
Once you've done that and you have a bit of a flame, you can gently blow it out and waft the smoke through your house. You can see it maintains a strong smoke in the embers because it has a lot of airflow going through it.
If you've already lit your stick and used it once or twice, and it now looks like this, I'm sure many of you have tried to light it, and it simply does not light. You'll see, you'll hold it in the flame, it stays a little bit lit, but not really, and tends to go out quite quickly.

Also weather you light it already or not, you can use a letter opener or any smoothed blade knife and gently poke it down into the end you're burning and twist gently to sort of open up the leaves

Hello Malik, That's a great question which has several answers according to different beliefs, for example some believe it to be a good omen, good energy or a "yes", while other believe differently. Hello Paula, thank you for your great questions! Unfortunately, it's the nature of Palo Santo...it only stays lit for a few seconds and smolders for slightly longer. It can certainly be frustrating, but at the same time so worth it for Palo Santo's incredible scent and healing properties. So never is it a negative? I used to be able to smudge then my life turned very toxic. No matter what I do smudge won't burn in my house? For many years now. It lights and goes right out. Even what I have grown myself and try to burn loose in a shell. ???

Hi there, That's very interesting! Have to say I've never come across sage not burning at all. I'm sure you've tried this, but is the sage dry enough? Also have you tried other smudging materials like Palo Santo? Many of the smudging materials, particularly Sweet Grass and Cedar tend extinguish very quickly and need be re-lit frequently, but White Sage tends to always burn well. Curious to know if anything has changed since. In the meantime, I hope that your smudging practice and the sacred plants remove all the negativity and toxicity, and fill your space with much love, peace and joy. ✨🙏🤍🙏✨ Much love Gaia

Hi there! Thank you for the great question. Your concern about using your smudge stick near smoke alarms is very valid and a challenge experienced by many, including myself! Our smudge sticks are crafted with natural, high-quality ingredients, but we always recommend taking precautions when using them, especially indoors. One suggestion is to open a few windows or doors while smudging to allow proper ventilation and prevent any potential triggers for your smoke alarm. If your smudging bundle or sage is still smoking and you want to extinguish it, you can gently press the lit end against a fireproof surface or in a container filled with sand or salt to smother the flame. Make sure to do this carefully and ensure the ember is completely extinguished before leaving it unattended.

Yes, you are 100% correct, this doesn't necessarily work certain smudge products such as Juniper, most Cedars and sometimes Rosemary, due to their material composition.
