I don't know if this strategy works in a all industries. But after spending 15 years in the IT industry, I can tell you that over-achieving in your role as a single contributor means you are not going anywhere. They will keep you there because they feel you are a perfect fit for your role. Most roles up the ladder I tried to applied for have been already given in restaurants, around barbecues if not in beds then were published by HR just the "regularity". My experience, is that if you are over achieving, you are working too much. You are not networking, dinning, drinking, chatting... this is what makes or breaks your advancement. People higher up in the hierarchy don't necessarily think in terms of the person that would be right for the company but who is best to complete their clique. When you face that kind of wall, no amount of effort, dedication or excellence will make any difference. After 15 years delivering excellence and missing all promotions, I decided to leave the corporate world for good but I still enjoy your videos.

I feel the same. I did the same with the academic society that study funeral culture in Japan, the only academic society. I was the admin and vice-chair. I wasn't getting anywhere with people that just leech on your work and achievement.

This is EXACTLY right and very well put. Some people in this situation are passed over for good reason and are just unaware of their shortcomings, but when this legitimately happens it can be extremely frustrating.

This is where I feel I’m at. Not as long, but 5 years now for my current company and after my supervisor left last week, and me trying to put my name in for replacement a month ago, I was completely shut down. Apparently they have a higher view for the position and I don’t meet that criteria. Already seeking to go elsewhere.

The higher up you go the less your technical skills are relevant and the more emphasis on people skills and getting along with the management club. Decide if you want to join this club or not.

Yesterday I made a mistake at packaging a product and much to my surprise my boss told me “ You did really well with that angry costumer “ . My boss forgot about my mistake bc there was higher value in my communication with costumers than my packaging skills . Interesting.🤔

In summary, people with competence and achievements tend to be stuck while people who plays along the company direction and politics can move up without achievement. So it all depends on what value you are ready to give away to your ambition to move up.

A bit off of this internal organizational politics theme, but possibly in line with your title: I’m an American 🇺🇸 expatriate language professor in Taiwan 🇹🇼, and lots of my career has dealt with language and culture. I have an unusual accolade on my resume from my time as a US Army Infantry officer in Central America. A housing development was named after me-no kidding! I would assume that this would make me a front runner under “Gets along well with diverse folks.” However, this has caught exactly ZERO attention over the years. Maybe I haven’t highlighted it enough.
