Vrains I feel showed a lot of the cracks in making a new non-Rush anime and it has to do with the game itself, it's so fundamental that I think it sent a message to Konami that the game is probably not very anime-friendly. Putting aside the... Other problems with Studio Gallop's later anime series, the card game is too combo-oriented and swingy for an anime to be a sort of accurate representation of the game that also sells competitive players new cards. There are episodes in Vrains that have Yusaku comboing off for ten minutes then a "to be continued" and this sort of pacing was fairly consistent across the entire series. This is also why Rush Duel anime are probably more easy for Konami to support, since they CAN fit whole duels in 15 minutes of screentime. OCG Structures is a series that dedicates basically 100% of its page space to just showing the duels and even in that they regularly skip the combos because they simply aren't interesting. I think that a "DM Reboot" wouldn't really solve the issue of bringing in new people since that also would be telling people, "Here's more nostalgia for people who are into the game."
@forget31006 ай бұрын
Ok hear me out. They simply give everyone Maxx C. The turns will be short, the duels will end in 15 min. The game will be accurate to the OCG. Everything is solved.
@JanizMakudomaru6 ай бұрын
@@forget3100 That's still a problem because Maxx C has you drawing everytime the opponent special summons. That means that they are going to have to waste time making multiple scenes of the person drawing right after the special summon and someone has to make a comment on it which is more episode filler. Then you're having to run the risk of the other hand trap bs being a part of that mix since that is what a lot of meta decks do now. Which creates the biggest problem of all being having everyone use the exact same cards in the exact same way for every duel that goes down with little variation on the strategies. It's a reason why some people don't particularly find Duel Monsters fun to watch and/or play irl, it's too homogenized.

Correct me if I’m wrong but one of the writers for Vrains stated that they had trouble writing ways for Soulburner to lose due to how his deck worked. If that is the case that may be a huge factor as to why we haven’t gotten a new anime as decks have become so consistent and powerful that they are difficult to write stories for that satisfying, progress the story yet don’t drag out compared to Rush Duels. I know people would say just reboot Duel Monsters but if you ask them to write duels like it is now then the problem still remains unless you are going to carefully curate which modern cards would be seen. Personally I think they should go the route of OCG Structures for new anime as the franchise has so many archetypes to make engaging stories from. They don’t need to make full episodes but like how Pokémon generations handle it. If they are gonna reboot it then start all the way from the first volume which never made its way to the West in an animated form so that’s at least a different experience.

Another reason the anime is important is that it allows writers to get creative with the game. Things like contact fusion, accel synchro, double tuning, etc. Were all things coined by the anime and evolved the game when they were brought in. The anime is an absolute necessity as it promotes innovation and game development. Without it, well I think you can look at the game right now and see for yourselves. Nostalgia sets and unchecked power creep from lore piles with 10+ game warping decks that all work way to well together giving a big middle finger to the people buying the nostalgia stuff.
@yurisei67326 ай бұрын
The creativity of mechanics used has absolutely no relationship to the level of powercreep. Contact fusion could be just as broken as snake eyes, it just happens not to have been yet. I'd also argue we've seen more mechanical creativity outside the anime than inside it. "What if synchros used 2 tuners" really isn't that hard to think of, but in non-anime decks we've seen things like archetypes using the extra deck as if it's a spell zone, archetypes using columns to make a duel feel like a shooting game, archetypes discarding your entire hand for cost, archetypes synchro climbing through 5 steps just because they can, archetypes that transform in battle, archetypes that use the extra monster zone to create a "hero standing alone" vibe, archetypes that can dodge their own skill drains - and hundreds of wacky standalone cards, like one that makes you do algebra for a board wipe.

The protagonist gets introduced to Yugioh and starts with a starter or structure deck from their local game store. They play table top Yugioh, but with the cool holograms that all the series have used. They slowly start attending locals and eventually a store championship. As their skills approve, they try out regionals and larger tournaments. This will show the progression of actual duelists starting at locals and working there way up and the struggles of competition while still having the fun duels and maybe a few blowouts just like modern dueling. This kind of progression would be similar to what early Cardfight Vanguard was. I think Konami can balance some of real-world dueling scenarios with some cool fantastical monster animationa that all the previous series had. Maybe they expect people to migrate from rush to the standard? But in any case, thats their current play and that's one of the reason's that not having Rush outside of Japan is dumb
@nicholasdaniel27786 ай бұрын
I actually would agree with you on this one, Paul. An anime would be greatly appreciated by; First, older as well as new players. My take on a new anime is have it be all interconnected with each universe: DM, Gx, 5D's and so on. It is stated in Duel Links that the Yu-Gi-Ohverse is a multiverse. So have the overarching plot be kind of like a Xenoverse 2-type situation, we have a protagonist, with his own main character ace monster, I was thinking on Chronicle Magician or either Nightmare Magician being his ace, or both as the story progresses. We have a best friend character who's strong in their own right, the best girl who's not the later aspects of Yu-Gi-Oh stereotypes, the rival, who's just the tsundere other best friend, and the villain(s): But! Just like Xenoverse 2, have them go from universe to universe causing trouble or changing history for the worse and their own benefit. Like, let's say the villain travels to the Duelist Kingdom era and participates in the tournament, as well as messes with duels, especially players decks, like let's say the Yugi vs Weevil Underwood duel, Weevil uses generic insect cards and equip spells to power up his insects, and his win condition is using Cocoon of Evolution on Larvae Moth to "try" and evolve it into Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth, or just Great Moth in that duel. What if, along with Weevil using his Cocoon of Evolution combo, he was given the spell card retrain of that card, Cocoon of Ultra-Evolution? Not only that, he has his Equip spells but he also had gotten Bio-Insect Armor, a monster card that acts as an Equip spell for Insects. Or the Bandit Keith vs. Joey Wheeler duel in Duelist Kingdom. Keith uses just base Machine-type monsters and equip spells to beat down his opponents as well as using his Barrel Dragon. Wouldn't it be cool if he also had gotten it's retrain, Desperado Barrel Dragon? Or even more, Blowback Dragon and the fusion of both of them, Gatling Dragon? I have ideas, but those are just some off the top of my head.

After 5Ds the anime got waaaaaayyy to serious and convoluted. different dimensions, gods, time travel, traumatic origins... none of these made the the original anime great. we need a new schoolyard duels anime that goes back to it's roots and shows how yugioh is fun but VERY slowly introduces the current mechanics of the game. The characters also need to stand on their own and not be all about the protagonist. Sevens was a great example in that Luke and Romin had their own style of duels and archetypes and never overlaped Yugas style. A new series in the OG world where the new kid learns about duel monsters and slowly works his way to the regionals is what is needed. ( also a solid support cast is needed.) A young protagonist that loves how his archetype looks, the friend and rival that plays the power deck and the other that plays a very technical style.

A yugioh that takes place in an older time , but follows modern era yugioh. They would need to introduce a new mechanic to sell the show, but they can also make the primary focus of the card game in the show - the new Illusion Type. They can give it a similar vibe to the original DM era

So many people have said that they want a lore anime like that one promo video and tbh I agree. I'd love to see more characters play but if we got to adapt duel terminal and other arcs into anime while also introducing anime exclusive arcs to introduce archetypes would be amazing!

I totally hear what you're saying. Watching the anime is how most of us first got into the game, and we want that experience to continue, for us and for new players. But the way the game is played right now, I don't see how they could base an anime off characters playing the game with any sort of accuracy. One turn would take an entire episode lol. But that's why I'm super excited for the Yugioh Chronicles series they've teased. Because I really REALLY want to see animated stories for my favorite card archtypes. The cards themselves have such rich stories, and you don't even have to know how the card game is played to enjoy them. Fingers crossed that they do something great with Chronicles.

They should create an ARC-V-like anime. It had a lot of potential and I love how it incorporated all summoning mechanics. However, due to internal issues, it ended up being a giant disappointment. It COULD have been the best Yugioh anime, though.
@superstitch56186 ай бұрын
Actually, my idea for a Yu-Gi-Oh! series is actually inspired by Arc-V (with it's legacy character concept) and as well as Duel Links, the Bonds Beyond Time movie, and the occasional character voice actor live duels. It serves as both a reboot/reimagining of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! (with it stars most of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! crew again with Yugi, Yami Yugi/Atem, Joey, Kaiba, etc) and a HUGE love letter to the ENTIRE franchise as it would include many elements, locations, summoning mechanics, and ESPECIALLY the characters from all the other Yu-Gi-Oh! incarnations. Again, it's basically taking the legacy character concept of the Arc-V anime, but the ENTIRE SHOW's cast is legacy characters, with almost no new characters. It would give me a chance to explore unique character dynamics and give characters that were VERY underused in the other series more of a chance to shine here (with a couple of characters I have in mind that I want to include with the main group). There's still a lot more I have to figure out with this concept and I'll admit it is very ambitious, but I'll try my best with it.

I mean, it makes sense that a card game born out of a manga then turned anime from popularity would probably like to rely on/be supported by those mediums to help its growth. Like if pokemon or digimon dropped their origin/main entry points (games, anime, VPets, etc) they'd have some trouble making things feel fresh or driving new player interests even if the tcgs are good.

Yugioh anime was what made me buy cards and start playing Yugioh, it's also the reason why I played all the digital games too. Without a Master Rules anime lately I haven't been playing Master Duel or even Duel Links because there is no enthusiasm for me to play anymore. Now I've been watching Shadowverse Flame which feels like Yugioh to me and that got me more excited to play Shadowverse. Been watching Cardfight Vanguard since Overdress so Overdress / Will + Dress and now DivineZ and that got me into Cardfight Vanguard. But Yugioh not having an Anime makes me not enthusiastic to play Yugioh and instead I get to try other card games thanks to their anime

I agree that there needs to be a master duel anime. There are a lot of new archetypes that have come out in Yugioh which are really cool and could become fan favorites if they were featured in an anime. Although I also think that the argument made by Dylan from Yugioh Everything is also quite solid that Yugioh doesn't really need an anime to promote the game anymore. The game is popular as is because of Master Duel and Duel Links.

In short: YGO needs more exposure, and I agree that an Anime will definitely help with that. I think the smartest thing they can do is do a DM reboot series. Maybe they can expand on how the DSOD movie ended, how Kaiba is ever searching to settle things with Atem and the consequences it brings with it. Give every character his/her own archetype that is actually useable in the TCG and build structure decks/boosters around that. Rebooting DM will bring back an older crowd while attracting new ones, and for fathers like myself it will be fun introducing it to your kid. I was a BIG ninja turtles fan back in the day, and the latest movies and games sparked the interest from my daughter

I get people wanting a DM reboot but like, no. First off, Takahashi's is gone now, and if they changed anything that wasn't from his original story people would be upset, and also, everyone's story is wrapped up thanks to the movie. If they want to reboot it, they can do some kind of magic to have it look HD or remastered at least

I think a big part of it is that there hasn't been any new gimmicks to try to sell, which is what inspired them to make 5D's and every anime we've had since then. Which sounds like an easy enough thing to fix by introducing a gimmick, but at this point, I don't know what they can do that wouldn't just be a strictly worse version of Link Monsters. For that matter they don't have many colors left to give to a new type of card either.
@VforVictory006 ай бұрын
It's like how tv shows like G.I Joe and stuff was designed to sell toys. If there's no TV show to promote the card game, it's harder to get new customers. The support for classic themes was created to cash in on nostalgia to keep fans of the old anime themed decks and cards interested in the card game.
@robertsixx7756 ай бұрын
I really agree, yugioh needs an anime that works alongside the tcg again. I still think they should make a show similar to the early seasons of Vanguard or even some of the newer Vanguard series(OverDress) where its a slice of life/tcg anime. Zero world ending events or ancient beings. I just want a show based off of the card game that follows the protagonist who recently got into the game who meets new friends, improves their deck goes to proper tournaments like a nationals or worlds. I also think this could be an amazing way to introduce people to the game and teach them how to play it similar to what Vanguard did. I know it wont be for everyone but I think it could be a really fun and cool anime. I'd happily watch it!

Paul, you're not wrong. I do feel that the anime debate really works for more casual players, though. I haven't played yugioh since the link evolution game. I never care to play again until I see a clip of Jaden or something. GX was favorite arc and always will. That said, I feel the anime works well with getting new players, like you said. Sitting down and reading some of the cards can be very overwhelming for beginners and the great thing about the anime was you "learn by example" so to speak. You could watch these duels and get a feel for what the cards do and in a fun way. You get attached to the cards more cause you get attached to a certain character and that can really keep someone in the game for longer

It has become unreasonable in every aspect at this point. Price. Time required. IRL play spaces. Price is obvious, even rogue costs a fortune because they have multiple 20€ cards you need 3 off often enough, not to mention staples. You can argue staples are something you only buy once and be wrong. New staples come out what feels like every other set that also end up costing 25-50-100€ (Mulchumy, Thrust, Little Knight) Time required is a huge opportunity cost. The game is so complex that unless you know most decks and their cards by heart you can't reasonably and meaningfully interact with them. Sure you can shotgun handtraps and learn as you go, but reading 1-2 cards or even a full set of archetype cards doesn't give you a good understanding of what their gameplan, or more specifically endboard will look like. Old yugioh you could sit down blind and still engage meaningfully with your opponents deck, now there is way too much memorization involved, not to mention the mental burden on players to execute the nuanced layered effects IRL. You could be doing and learning/studying a lot of other things for less effort. IRL Play spaces is just a result of the 2 above. Garbage products close locals. People can't care after what feels like years of tier zero dominance. Had one of the big stores close in the capital recently, they held newbie learning events weekly, bi-weekly locals etc. The store died because they couldn't even firesale most yugioh boxes anymore, despite best efforts and the owner can't just waste their time on this forever.

The freshness comes from getting new players into the game. A new generation of kids would get introduced to the game with each anime, but because of how kid unfriendly the game is, how can an anime pull them in? While the game is no longer a children's card game, the anime has always been for a younger audience, even the darker shows like 5D's and Vrains. And let's be honest. No one would want to see Snake-Eyes or Kastira in a scripted duel, let alone recurring scripted duels, and the character decks that would come from the anime would be stomped by those decks unless they were somehow even more broken.

The problem with card game anime is that they rarely let the game stand on it's own to drive the story. It always has to ramp up to "the end of the world." If they had a show where getting better and learning how to win bigger and bigger tournaments was the major drive for the characters to be playing, I could see more people getting interested. Personally, I think Konami should make another video game like the WC 2009-2011 series, even if the setting is a different era but with updated cards. I find myself replaying those old DS games all the time. Not only is it a fun narrative to connect each duel, but the costumes and different disc(s) were cool.

I do agree I hope that whatever Yu-Gi-Oh! anime that they do after Go Rush returns to having regular Master Duels I understand the reason why it did this along with Sevens was to get newer and younger people into the game by having it a simplified version, but I think that goes against helping the brand somewhat. I that Studio Gallop did the animation all the way from the original series to VRAINS and while the current studio is OK, I do miss studio gallop so I hope that they’ll get back to a series that lines up with the card game also I know some people may be polarized about this, but I would be fine even if they introduced a new summoning mechanic

Imagine an Anime for Yugioh where there’s this tournament across every generation Across every dimension. Each character gets pulled from their timeline to see who’s best of the best. The AI/Overlord/whoever brings them to this tournament and gives every duelist (good, bad or neutral) complete access to the entire TCG card list for example Yami Yugi gets all the Dark Magician support and knowledge of all summon techniques. Then you can have any crazy dream matchups possible such as Yusei with stardust Vs Joey with red eyes or galaxy eyes Vs blue eyes and the potential is endless. It can be a super long show with tons of great duels. The excitement can come from heroes overcoming other heroes, or have a round in the tournament where the participants are partnered in some crazy paring. You wouldn’t even need fantastic story telling because the weight of all the loved characters in past animes. You also don’t need a main character because they’re all main characters and that creates more suspense so you don’t have that underlying “oh well we know the main character is going to pull this off”. Just brainstorming but I think it would be pretty cool
