You made such a great point. I've heard a lot of tribute bands with the lead singer trying to emulate Karen, but Tori just naturally sounds the way she sings. This is evident when you listen to her sing other songs that are not Carpenters songs. However, she does effect a breathier, lighter sound on her Olivia Newton-John cover. It's ridiculous that she has a contralto range so she can do Carpenters covers, but then goes into soprano mode to sing Olivia. Oh, and she engineered this entire song herself. She's remarkable.

Wow. I like crazy metal music but that doesn't mean I don't recognize a God given talent when I hear it. There are a few people like Karen and Freddie Mercury that are just unicorns in their talent. And this lady has that same quality that Karen had. You cannot learn that, only focus it. You have it or not. Great reaction!

Tori is amazing. I have been following her for a year and the first time I heard her I thought I was listening to Karen. I sent the short clip to all my 50 and 60 year old friends who, like me, were raised on The Carpenters. I remember wanting to drum because of KC! Tori is amazing and should find her own niche!

She just released Suddenly. Cover of Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richard. She sounds just like Olivia! Amazing talent

Hi Maria! You pretty much had it. Richard Carpenter and Cynthia Weil wrote the song for Karen and the next Carpenters album. She died before even hearing the song. It debuted on Richard’s solo album, Time, in 1987. Dusty Springfield sang it with Richard and that video is on KZbin, a beautiful song but... For the first time Tori gave herself “Producer” credit in the info box, long overdue. She did EVERYTHING with Drew’s piano track. Now I’m gonna freak you out. Let’s talk about her range. That is her natural voice as you said. She does include some “Karenisms” inflections when doing a Carpenters song. They were here to but toned down. Doing those harmonies and layers gave the Carpenters vibe. The recording in the United Methodist Church of Downey (Karen’s funeral and Richard’s wedding) was boomy and crowd noise. So Tori made the Studio Version for a real song experience. The recording of that night is available on KZbin. My recording is on my channel, link through my name ID, including all the 55th Official videos are in my pinned comment. Tori nailed the live but if you watch it, you’ll see why she did this. She muffled the applause. Until she had her turn it was lovely and polite. After this song the crowd (full of people who personally knew R&K) went nuts. They got it. I guesstimate 80% had no idea who Tori was. They know now. As do you. Now for her range, on her channel she covers a lot of songs of the 60-80’s. Including The Beatles (sounds nothing like J,P,G or R! Heart, ABBA, Bread, Herb Alpert, Cass, Patsy, and others. But most of all, second only to Carpenters; Olivia. Here is her most recent Short cover of “Sam” by Olivia Newton-John. Get ready for 🤯 Thanks for another heartfelt reaction. Joe Sam (Short) ON-J; kzbin.infoWzrpXaZKT7Y?si=hAhOaaTUucms5BEO Not for a reaction, just a treat. Edit: To make a long comment longer. She’s not signed. The group shot was a combination of the performers and 55th Organizers. We all had the 55th blue T-Shirt, I wore mine this night. It was a four day celebration of Carpenters goodness. 2 bus tours and the show, a screening of the 1989 movie. And the last night the icing on the cake a surprise interview with Richard. He was NOT on the schedule. Some folks knew. LOL.

I believe the song was written for Karen, but she apparently passed away before even getting to hear it. Joe can fill you in more about the details, he was at the event. Wonderful reaction. I could listen to Tori sing all day.

One final comment. I did not in my past understand the passion of people who were Taylor Swift fans (also known as "Swifties.") Now that I am a committed Tori Holub fan I do get it. (Does that make me one of the Tories?) There are so few people whose talent can touch us in as personal a way as Tori does. I love Go Maria's summaries as well. They are so honest on a deep emotional level. Thanks for that as well. ❤

Have not read through all the comments to see if anyone has said, but Dusty Springfield and Richard did a studio version of this. If you haven’t already, check it out.

I usually give the details when I request. I think I did for Maria but forgot exactly. Dusty was great and short shifted in the credits. Sigh. It was my favorite before I heard Tori in Downey then this clean version.

To explain (as I understand it) - you'll get live and studio (or album) tracks. The studio version presented here is one that has been cleaned up and made fit for public listening. It's slightly out of sync with the video as it was re-recorded away from the venue, hence Tori's credit as Producer on this track. A live track would be the one as performed live in venue complete with any quirks of the sound echoing differently due to the venue and will sound slightly different depending on the original recording equipment. This is what you get when a performer releases a concert recording. It's largely unaltered but sent through a production process to make it sound more even. That said, Tori has a nice video that shows what equipment she used to make the layered Carpenters sound which is brilliantly visualised in the collab with Jim. She does do other songs outside The Carpenters but these have been recorded for the tik-tok platform so are not full versions, but includes Olivia Newton-John and Bread...all are worth a listen.

You may or may not know, I recorded my version of Tori live at the 55th. I posted it on my channel along with a pinned comment linking all 55th official and other relevant videos, including this one that Maria is reacting to. Link is through my ID. The thumbnail is of Tori and Richard meeting at the 55th. Joe

Amazing. You hear a song that Karen Carpenter never sang. You hear the song, yet you immediately think Karen Carpenter.

The "real" performance is available in the net, but it is cell phone audio. Richard was at this anniversary and there is a photo of the two together. Fingers are crossed all over hoping for a collab. Tori may not exactly be Karen from all the records, but an exact duplicate is physically impossible. In fact, it is a certainty that Karen sounded different at the Garlic festival than on the record, unless there were shenanigans.

There is an Official 55th video of the event. It was shot in landscape and 1080p. It suffers from the same sound issues of that evening, though. Still, it is a raw and unaltered experience as we saw and heard it that night and for that it is very special. I link them all in my video of Tori’s performance that I shot. It’s on my channel and just click through my name to see it. I have the RC interview linked also. Joe

Just to set the record straight Richard actually wrote this just before Karens passing, and my guess is, he was probably planning on recording this with her, but never got the chance to because she passed away. I had heard that Karen was planning on getting back into recording and even begin touring again. The night she died she had plans to go shopping with her Mother the next day, but unfortunately, that never happened. Richard eventually recorded this song with Dusty Springfield. I take it you know who she is.

Tori sang this in the church. The Sound system wasn't the best. The studio version is recorded in the studio with high end equipment.

Richard cowrote this for Karen and their next album. Karen died before hearing the song. Yes, in 1987, Dusty sang the lead on Richard’s album for this song.
