I read something somewhere that elphaba controls the conductor when shes in the air because elphaba cant see the conductor from up there. (But on Broadway I know there is video screens) but what I had heard is when elphaba lifts her broom before shes gonna end Ahhhh note it cues the condctor orchestra and ensemble. Which the conductor here kind makes the same movement as elphaba.

Joel ARTPOP yes it’s just like in The Wizard and I or No Good Deed, when she makes her last power move it creates the final button!
@fischybusinesss5 жыл бұрын
When she does the final aAaAa note, she lifts her broom and it cues the ensemble to sing "down" and when she throws her hand down, that's the cue for the orchestra to go

Noah Sprague tell that to Christine Dwyer who’s voice gave out on the last note in TWAI and she did the arm movement 3 times total, 2 to no avail lmao
@evan49054 жыл бұрын
This is true, to an extent. For DG specifically, the first arm thrust cues the ensemble and the one that follows cues the orchestra. The final thrust/power move determines when everything stops. This is true for TWAI and NGD too. Both songs end on the actor's cue. That's why you'll see most of them twisting their torso back to signal they're about to end it.

@aqe27324 жыл бұрын
Yes, they follow her cue but also know the general timing of the music. A good conductor will watch the actors and make minor changes based on what is going on (for example some new ensemble members may be lagging behind or not ready) so it's really a bit of both. In this instance they definitely took her cue and did it perfectly!! If they aren't cued you run the risk of people going early which is the last thing you want in a number like this!!!

Gotta say, that is consistently my favourite moment in the entire show. Done right, it demonstrates the perfect relationship between performer, conductor and light tech. The performer leads the conductor to cut the music at the exact moment they want the vocal part to end. Then the light tech cuts all the lights beyond one right on the performers face that lingers just a half second longer. It gives the performer just a moment longer to give a dramatic head-toss or something. And every time I see it done right, I'm like... *chef kiss*

The real wizard behind the curtain - is the crew that gets Elphaba *safely* tethered to the "elevator" in just under 4 seconds. Also the elevator device was hydraulic-ram based (the Munchkinland Tour with Idina Mendel and Christin Chenowith), was huge, and about 6,000 lbs. The system was pressurized and moved during the louder musical passages. In the theater I worked the elevator was stored "flown" from the grid on electric chain hoists. lowered to the deck right before this scene starts, connected to the pump and reservoir, and placed into position during the second verse. This was in 2009 and the tour re-designed a number of effects and other changes have been made since then to accommodate smaller stages and reduce the number of trucks needed to move the show. The level of professionalism from all departments and crafts on this show are amazing.

The next time you're in the theater, turn around and look for the conductor screens. I never noticed them until I went on stage for a professional musical myself (Ciske de Rat, Dutch original). The actors have (multiple, often black and white, dimmed) screen(s) in the theatre hall to see the conductor too. Of course conductors take cues from actors, especially in solos, but for ensemble numbers, it's very useful. Backstage there are also a few screens for those singing off stage.

Is the video and audio out of sync? Or are the orchestra just ignoring her gestures??
@Patmorgan235Us4 жыл бұрын
The audio is synced. There's usually a delay between a conductors motions and the sound from the orchestra. It takes time for the orchestra to perceive the motions, interpret and react.
@raygunsforronnie8474 жыл бұрын
@@Patmorgan235Us No, it's the speed of sound in air. If you watch the players, they're in time with the baton. You'll hear them slightly behind (less than 1 video frame) and the singers, 40 feet upstage of the camera, are about 40 milliseconds behind the conductor because of the speed of sound in air (about 1 ms per foot of distance). Note that the chimes and bells in the percussion booth to our right, is behind relative to the woodwinds... because it's further from the camera.
@@Patmorgan235Us There is more to it than is discussed in the article, mostly it centers around the orchestra players waiting to hear other players - reaction time - and distance from other orchestra sections. It's why marching bands have a drum major and why orchestras have a conductor. Aside from marching while playing, a band that's spread out 180 feet would have nearly one fifth of a second in difference if the front row has to hear the back row (drum line) for timing cues. So reaction time and speed of sound in air are the primary issues, not because players have some plot to hang behind the beat. For fun time try conducting antiphonal choruses. It messes with the conductor's head to hear both choruses late; it helps if the conductor is equidistant to each chorus, but everything the conductor hears is late compared to his baton. Finally, in the Wicked! pit clip, the orchestra is *ahead* of the actor's singing... and that's because of the speed of sound in air - the orchestra is much closer to the camera's mic than the singer, probably 40 feet or so, so even if the singers were exactly on top of the beat the camera would "hear" them as arriving later, because they are. This is simple high school physics.

Wow, actual conducting. I came from watching piano conductor cams where there was hardly any conducting at all.

Videos like this make me excited to be in pit in the coming years- unfortunately I play alto saxophone so I couldn’t really play in a lot of musicals like Wicked because it’s a different music style but it’ll be fun nonetheless :>

Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It just makes it even more magical!!! Not many female conductors around. Great to see 👏🏻👏🏻

I'm presuming that's a huge screen of the show infront of the conductor rather than the actual stage? Great to have such a good over-view of everything from the cam in this one.

Anyone know why the conductor has two A-16 avioms?
@aqe27324 жыл бұрын
+Brad Christian One Aviom controls the headphone line, while the other Aviom controls the monitors (usually two nearfields on the podium and some more in the pit if needed). Shows like Wicked only require the use of headphones if you are conducting a click-track part- for the rest of the show, the conductor can easily rely on monitors instead. It doesn't make sense to run both feeds to one Aviom- with two mixers you get independent control if one needs to be changed but not the other. Hope this helps!

This must be difficult because you don’t know when the actor is going to sing or stop

Well, that's exactly the conductor's job: giving the cues to the band and the performers when they have to start or stop.

Constantly anticipating what the singers do. Mad props. Makes it feel like she's leading them 100 percent even though she has to follow them to some extent.
