Just to add a little additional supporting information:- The performance you hear in the video is given by an amateur youth theatre company based here in the UK. All of the actors on stage are in or around their late teens. The orchestra comprises a mix of music students, semi-professional musicians and professional musicians. You will notice that the 'signature' organ, drums and electric guitar are missing from the ensemble. This is a requirement of the license and not the choice of the company. These instruments are covered using click tracks which are provided by the licence owner. My guess is that this is intended to ensure consistency in reproduction of the famous and instantly recognisable theme tune......or it might be simply to avoid booking an extra couple of musicians who would otherwise be sat doing nothing for the rest of the show. Either way - it's an amazing show and these kids did an amazing job every night for what turned out to be a sell-out run.

I came here to make the observation about the sampled pieces. Your explanation makes perfect sense.

I always thought the "organ" was a synth and almost never real except maybe when it was at Royal Albert. It sure never seemed real as it sounded Korg and such. But it may also explain why when they perform in a large place with a really nice organ, it is usually not used except maybe as a prop. I think the ultimate Phantom performance some day will be at Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall in a few years when Midmer-Losh is finally finished with its decades long restoration. (Disclaimer: Scientific obs ahead) 武汉-利伯-N1H1-SARS-COV-2 had not became known at this time in 2017. But at Harvard, Dr. Charles Lieber had already started getting $50,000 per month from nation of China and they also provided a Captain Zheng of People's Army plus Lt. Ye who ferried biologicals between Wuhan and Boston. DOJ arrested Zheng and Lieber and charged them with felonies for their scheme. www.justice.gov/opa/pr/harvard-university-professor-and-two-chinese-nationals-charged-three-separate-china-related Lt. Ye of People's Army got away, making a final run back to China with a box of biologicals. www.fbi.gov/wanted/counterintelligence/yanqing-ye Ye is on the top 10 FBI most wanted. In just a couple years of this production, we would have 武汉-利伯-N1H1-SARS-COV-2 and nothing like this would ever be produced again like it going forward.

@@ngck You can seen the conductor give the (very obvious) cue to the keyboard player on the right when title song starts. She then pushes the click-track or sample. I suspect it's uploaded in her keyboard because I don't see anything else there. What's also very obvious is that nobody else is playing their instrument at that particular moment.

Mad respect for these people. They sit in a cramped place for a long while, making music, with no break until intermission. Look how close all those instruments are on eachother. I would spontaniously get claustrophobic.

I did one pit where we had Screens as the conductor was in the pit and we were in another room for Hello, Dolly! and then we did Cabaret and the pit for that is ON that state so we had to dress up and it was really really interesting what we do and I enjoy it so much. For an amateur youth production this performance is amazing. Given a few more years, the minor pitch issues that pop up will be obsolete, and those singers will have a bright future ahead of them in future professional productions. As a brass musician, the pit sounded superb with a good balance between all the instruments. Can't blame them for reading and looking at their phones, as long as they hit their entrances and it's not a distraction to other players around them. Nice job everyone.

I work professionally in theatre and opening ceremonies and I’ve never a heard an amateur orchestra sound this good along with the two leads. Christine’s soprano voice is absolutely brilliant and rivals characters who have played that role around the world. She just needs to work on her lower range. Phantom is also very good!

You mean the flat and wavering notes he was hitting? He had good moments, but... Nah. I've never played in a pit but I can see it has a few upsides over a traditional orchestral performance, which I've done countless times over the years. You don't have to worry about attire nearly as much, you can use your phone during rests and you can bring drinks with you That said it looks like it is often pretty cramped and the lighting doesn't seem to be too good either.
@MrMoogey
@MrMoogey 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It really boils down to the type of set up the theater has. Some/most are in front below the floors (that smog machine is awful). This is more amateur so looks like they’re backstage which has limited space, hence looking cramped. Attire depends on conductors. Some, like this isn’t concerned about folks’ outfits. Some require concert dress the first night. Some require black only. The stand light is sufficient. Phones, not so much and are distracting but a book, magazine, newspaper, crossword is fine. Having played the violin book far too many times to count, I get more satisfaction than a regular orchestra. Highly advise folks play at least once in a pit.

The pre-recorded track is there mainly to cover the noises made by the stage mechanics powering the boat prop the Phantom and Christine are traveling in..Since it's the only "rock" song in the show,it wouldn't be feasible to have Guitar players,a Bass player and a Drummer in the pit for just one song...Though honesty given the advances in show technology since the 80s when this show first came out,you'd think the backing track would no be necessary 🤷@@roberthollander4522

The last note (E6) is usually recorded so that the actress playing Christine doesn't damage her voice (it gets quite tiring for the voice to perform that at least 8 time a week). I believe that they can decide to sing it at there own risk but they usually don't. They might decide to sing it if it's a special occasion (opening night, closing night, ect). If I am not mistaken this should be the Phantom of the Opera UK Tour meaning they have several "closing nights" (when they finish in one location and move to the next) and I saw a comment saying that this was their final show in Derby so maybe the Christine wanted to do something special for her last show there. Regarding the overture (when the chandelier rises from the stage): it, unfortunately, is pre-recorded. The orchestra merges into it at a certain point (like half way through). Apparently it is pre-recorded because of: "The Overture is taped because of technical aspects with the chandelier.". I don't really know what the technical aspects would be but there you go, hope I helped :)

@davedrums4fun
@davedrums4fun 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. There are various bits of percussion written into the keys pad. If you look closely, you can see the keyboard closest to the percussion playing the clash cymbals. In most cases it makes sense due to the percussion part already being busy, but there are a couple of instances where that wasn’t the case which is a little odd. I can only imagine there was some logic to it at the point at which it was orchestrated.

OP wrote in their pinned comment that the license states they can't use the 'signature' organ, drums or electric guitar so those bits do have to be prerecorded yeh

I notice a lot of the musicians seem to erase marks on their music. Can someone tell me why or what they're doing?
@davedrums4fun
@davedrums4fun 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! It’s normal practice to lightly mark the score with changes or highlights or reminders etc. All marks must be removed prior to returning the music to the hiring company when the show run finishes. This video is taken from the final performance so many of the orchestra are taking the opportunity to clean the score as they go rather than leave it until the end. 👍

Yes, the main theme and some other small parts are pre-recorded to ensure consistency. Not sure if that’s in the description as the other guy so helpfully mentioned, but the creator said that in a few comments

everyone does that. it gets really boring sitting through 5+ practices, 6-10 hours a day, where most of the time is spent with the director just telling people what to do on the stage. eventually, people memorize the cues, so there is little chance of actually missing the start of a song to texting or playing games on a phone.

Yeah, there's no issue with texting - just don't miss a cue! I play in a heap if shows and I'm always reading a book when I'm not playing.

You're right. I was wincing the whole time. Christine's high note at 15:10 was more than a bit under too, enough so that I wondered if she was comping by singing a step low. I saw Dave Shipley's response to one of the other commenters and learned that these were teens. Not bad for teens. I guess we could take into consideration that this was closing night and their voices were probably wore slap out after some nights of singing this. Most teens don't have the training to care for their voices for singing this score days on end. I know I didn't when I was a teen, and I was pretty doggone good back in the day.

Really Useful should have never made the rights for this show available for high schools and amdram groups. The show is too good to be done half ass. This is a fine musical performance but there’s no way they would have had $50,000 to pump into costumes and staging to do it justice.

@davedrums4fun

It's a performance to a full house. The sound is taken directly from the mixing desk and the orchestra is positioned in the rear of the theatre wings, so quite a distance from the audience. As a result there is almost no spill into the mics.

In actual fact - if you listen closely around 3:40 you can hear the audience spill into the onstage mics just before they are faded out. 👍

Does anyone happen to know if this is an amateur or a professional production? The orchestra is rather good! - But the singing personnel... Well, I just hope they are amateurs. Otherwise they wouldn't justify the expensive entrance fees for a professional production. I hate to say it, but especially the actress playing Christine is certainly not up to professional standards. Her final high E at the end of the title song! My own shrieking at that sound could easily have been as asthmatic as hers! For amateur standards the singing would be fine but not for a professional performance!

Carsten Lorentz Thanks for the question. It might have been better to wait for the answer (or read the existing comments) before passing judgement though. This is a youth theatre performance. Everyone on stage is under 18 and they’re all incredible. The orchestra is a mixture of music students, semi-pros and pros.

WOW!!!! Intonation problems GALOR! From the singers to the pit. OMG! It's really so bad it's unlistenable! Every member of the pit should have tuned beforehand with their own individual tuners. Professionals are expected to play IN TUNE. I would rather hear a mistake than hear a score played out of tune. And for us woodwind players who have cold horns...get plastic reeds, for one thing, and then find your own solutions to tune your various horns accordingly. Tune them COLD! Know how to adjust DURING play and always USE YOUR EARS!
