Her moments of sadness and crying were the most powerful images I have ever seen on a movie screen. The Ozdust scene, the scene where Glinda says she is beautiful. But the final scene is the most impactful. When Glinda puts on her cape and Elphaba breathes heavily, fixes her hair, a tear drops and she looks up in slow motion and the sunset is behind her and the orchestra plays is one of the most thunderous feeling I have ever felt. It was so loud and moving and the only scene that gave me chills!

Her take on Elphaba, having built up a front of strength and almost being blasé about how people treat her resonates so much with how I dealt with the homophobia around me in my teens. If anyone wasn't keeping track, she was belting DG live, in a corset, harnessed in the air (most singers usually visualize their breathing relative to their feet on the ground), while using her core strength to turn her body in the air, for 12-14 hours without a bathroom break (she said it was too much work undoing/redoing all the layers of costume and harness. And yet her Elphaba is so wonderfully intimate and understated (until she isn't). She just quirks her lips at Glinda and it's everything. She's superwoman! EGOT loading...
@rkah618724 күн бұрын
I was one of those who were very sceptical of this adaptation - I did not think either Ariana Grande or Cynthia Erivo were right for this, and anyway, what more can you add to the original, and all the marketing and hype that surrounded it was bound to leave me disappointed... I was blown away. I don't think it was perfect but it was as close as you could get to it. It was certainly a labour of love, their respect for the stage show clearly shines through and I cannot ask for more.

Honestly, I know we all love Idina and she's the first Elphaba, etc, BUT... especially as a black woman, I feel so much more depth in this character as played by Cynthia! @realfairygroveАй бұрын
did you see idina on stage??? you probably saw the tonies defying gravity performance and judged it off of that. cynthia has more room for her character development in a film and with like 6 hours of time to move around in (including part two). stage and film are different. idina performed this show 8 times a week and she created this character. she gave such a moving and intricate performance. her acting inspired so many people, and she put her heart and soul into those songs every night. she won a tony for a reason. yes cynthia may be more consistent with her vocals, and you may think she’s done more with elphaba. but she had 20 years of elphaba performances to perfect her character. (although her performance is nothing short of spectacular). without idinas influence, cynthia’s character would be way different. idina and cynthia’s performances are very different, but that doesn’t mean one is better than the other. i love what both of these wonderful actresses brought to the character elphaba, and they should not be compared! 💚💚💚 edit: some people are upset about this comment… i wanted to assure you that im not downgrading cynthia’s performance (i cried 5 times while watching the movie mainly because of her emotion), i am saying both performances are fabulous and they should not be compared because they both were stunning in these roles and they both have created such a legacy. what you like in each performance is opinion based and up to you. im sorry if i was rude about your opinion, but im not sorry if my opinion made you so mad that you say im displaying insecurity and derangement now???
@sasakatha7514Ай бұрын
@realfairygrove Yes! A movie is different from a stage show. I like them both, Idina and Cynthia. But MY Elphaba is Willemijn Verkaik, who played the role from 2007-2017 in three different languages in Germany, the Netherlands, on West end and on Broadway. That's record! But that doesn't mean the other actresses are less good.

@ Cynthia is an incredible stage performer too - she literally won a Tony for it & the songs she sang in The Color Purple were harder than Defying Gravity (on a technical level)! AND she sang Defying Gravity in the hardest way possible: while in a harness, flying in the air. CYNTHIA will always be MY ELPHABA because I know she would sound as amazing if not better on stage too. No matter which language she sang in lol. Cynthia also trained singing opera too so I know for a fact she can sing in other languages. She’s just incredible. ✨❤️🔥💚✨❤️🔥💚✨❤️🔥💚✨

This movie has helped me to be myself. I just moved to a new school and I had no friends and nobody wanted to be friends with me because I was black. People would talk about me behind my back, thinking I couldn't hear them. They thought I had no feelings. THEY THOUGHT I WAS A NOBODY. But the two things that brought me up was the ballroom dress, and when cynthia said, "Nobody, in all of Oz, no wizard, what there is or was is ever gonna bring..... ME DOWN" These scenes made me cry so much that Elphaba was going through the same thing as me because of her skin color, but that never stopped her from being who she was. Another part was that when Cynthia was singing the wizard and I, and she said, "But that isn't really important to me." It taught me that even if Elphaba wanted the wizard to change her skin color so she could fit in, she didn't even care if the wizard didn't because allnshe wanted to do was meet the wizard. The movie really helped me with my mental health. Also, Glinda when she said, "You are so beautiful." That also made me cry because Elphaba has never felt loved before nor heard those words. This movie was the best.

Her portrayal of Elphaba blew me away and truly changed me for good. Her little nuances, emotions, mannerisms and power were so profound in a beautiful way.
