Wicked is not based on The Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum. It's based on what you might call a satire of the book. Gregory Maguire is the author of the book: Wicked, confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. That's the book Wicked is based on. And, yes it has adult themes in it. Also, I don't know why Cynthia Erivo would make disparaging remarks about African American. Her mate, Lena Waithe, is African American.

7:20 So those parts are from the Gregory Maguire books starting with _Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West_ which the stage show and film are kind of based on. The original Wizard of Oz books by L. Frank Baum had the Wicked Witch of the West as a one-eyed villain who only shows up in like one chapter of one book.

@@lionheart3290 Foundational Black Americans. More than a decade ago, when she was still largely unknown, a friend of hers who was an academic, published an article in which she made remarks, as an African woman, that were critical of certain aspects of Afro-American culture. This received some backlash from sections of the community, and Cynthia sent a tweet that was supportive of her friend, in a doesn't-she-have-a-point? sort of way, which then earned her some backlash as well. Nevertheless, she stood by what she had said, and by her friend, although she did not seem to escalate the controversy. Time passed, and Erivo came to the US to appear as Celie in a production of The Colour Purple on Broadway, which had transferred from London. She made a huge success, winning the 2016 Tony for best actress in a musical. As a result of her performance in TCP and some small parts in films, she was asked to play Harriet Tubman in the eponymous biopic. This aroused some resentment, and the complaints about her 'disrespectful' remarks about FBAs were revived and conflated into an argument that she should / could not play such an iconic character in the fight against slavery, because the was not a Descendant of Slavery'. Having been born in the UK to first generation immigrants from Nigeria, she was instead the Descendant of subjugation to colonial rule, and therefore did not have the requisite inheritance of collective cultural trauma that some claimed was necessary to play the part. Besides, wasn't she taking work from 'more qualified' American actors? Standing firm against some very hurtful _ad hominem_ criticism, she went on to make the film, which was her first above the title role, and she also wrote and performed a theme song, Stand Up. She received generally excellent notices for her performance, and was nominated for best leading actress and best original song awards at the 2018 Oscars. For a film of that scale, it performed well at the box office and internationally, and returned a decent profit. She's a fantastic actress, and her singing is incredible. Being cast in the lead role of the biggest musical property in the business is a remarkable testament to her talent. It's not so long since it would have been an almost unthinkable achievement for a black queer actress, and that ought to be a cause of some satisfaction. However, it would appear that some people can hold on to a grudge for a very long time. resentment lingers

Cynthia Erivo was pretty amazing, and I loved her, but I still thought that Ariana Grande stole the show. That being said, I have seen the stage musical twice, and I think the character of Glinda always steals the show. It's partly just the way the show is written. Glinda has the best lines, IMO. For example, the Tin man, Lion and Scarecrow were featured in this movie. Jon Chu was dropping hints of the wizard of Oz all over the film. I think the questions are was Glinda truly “good?” Was the wicked witch of the west truly “evil?” I believe most of this film is from the stage play.

I just listened to your post, and the part about disliking Cynthia Erivo says more about Americans' ignorance and arrogance than about her comments. While trying to find out what she said, I fell down a rabbit hole about ADOS (American Descendants of Slavery). I was still left wondering: was their anger directed at her because she isn’t African American (assuming she doesn’t have a historical link to slavery and that only Americans are unique in that experience), or because she is Nigerian (whose forefathers may have had a connection to the slave trade)? Considering that less than 10% of all enslaved people were sent to North America, it seems rather ill-informed to assume that only African Americans can talk about the experience. Unlike in North America, slavery in the Caribbean was largely unchecked-look up the ‘Derby Dose.’
@justmyopinion842 ай бұрын

@courtneyz40152 ай бұрын
Because she's rude that's why. If Americans are so bad, stop playing American icons. That's all.
@simbahunter88942 ай бұрын
One cannot imagine a world where Black American actors would go to the UK, or the Caribbean, speak disparagingly about the local Black population, then be cast to play their most illustrious historical figures, and the locals would just accept it. It would NEVER happen. We Black Americans have an ethnicity and a culture that influences the entire world, and slavery is only part of it. Cynthia Erivo would have no career if she didn't cosplay as us, so the least she could do is be respectful. Yes, she's talented. But there are at least five Black American Broadsay performers who can sing rings around Cynthia, yet she's the one who gets opportunity after opportunity. I believe it's because of her accent, and the fact that she goes to such lengths to look ugly. Hollywood is intimidated by beautiful Black people.
@emmanuelrobert2082 ай бұрын
@@justmyopinion84 "Interesting point, but I believe your argument has a flawed basis. Suggesting that someone cannot portray a role due to geography rather than historical experience seems misguided. The idea that the plantocracy was exclusive to North America isn't accurate either. Additionally, if the goal is to dismantle stereotypes, it’s important not to reinforce them. The harm caused by the supposed ‘ownership’ of the N-word is significant and far-reaching, making it difficult to fully grasp its impact."

I have no personal feelings one way or another about anyone in this movie. I'm posting my opinion based on the movie only. Actually.... this movie is not good and IS for me. It's for me cause it's entertaining well done and fully realized and the music is great. Movies suck recently and it good to see a movie well done to some extent for once. It's NOT good (minor spoilers) cause Cynthia Erivo is being laughed at for looking green and only wants to help animals. Nothing WICKED about that. She seems good. Even the end she doesn't seem like someone who wants to hurt people but be free. If the movie is wicked it's the other people in the movie. So it's not really her story of how the Wicked Witch of the West is wicked or even becomes wicked. Hard to see how she'd transition into Part 2 as someone people will hate or want to kill. So THAT'S why it's for me cause at least movie was entertaining wasn't for me cause its nothing like the true origins of the Wizard of Oz and if ur gonna say it's based on the play then that's even for dumb cause the movie explains so much that relates to what happened in the Wizard of Oz. I hope I'm wrong of course and Part 2 makes Cynthia Erivo someone doesn't like on screen. That's the only way it's gonna be true to the story of it all whichever angle you want to to view it from.

I loved it...but primarily because of Cynthia, how annoying "Glinda" character was...and the great costume and set designs. I love musical plays...not all...but quite a few...if well-done. So, i liked this more than most of the musical fillms that I have seen...probably because the music was so well done in this film. I do have to research if this is based more on the Oz book series...or more on the Wicked play itself. I thought it was very cute to have some of the original Broadway Wicked actors make a cameo in this version. You were very fair in your critique and I totally understand your criticisms you gave. I feel the green-discrimination would feel like race-discrimination regardless...even though Caucasian Idina Menzel played the role originally. In fact, with that one on Broadway, you have perky blonde, petite, natural baby-voiced actress Kristin Chenoweth versus brunette, tall, boisterous voiced Idina Menzel. They are direct opposites with Idina's chatacter also being green. Even those 2 Broadway actresses' singjng styles are opposites...though both can hit very strong, very full high notes.

Because you don't know NOTHING about the book or play is the reason why you are lost. The Animals are very important, and I guess that comes in part 2. However, I read the book so I know that they changed a lot of it. The book is good. It's adult but its good. This movie was good because of Cynthia for me and I didn't even notice the length of time. However, I also love LOVE musicals. The only down part i felt was Jonathan as the Prince and that can be because they change a lot of him from the book. Number 1 thing: he was black and in the book they made references to him being the color as sh!t 💩. That's why him and Elphaba became a couple. They were considered different.. it's interesting though... the bottom humans were actually Pink/Red in the book. 😂 Top: Galinda people 2nd: Elphaba/ munchkins 3rd: Prince/ Brown 4th: Pink/Red Then the Animals and last animals. That's the order in the book. Elphaba family was actually rich and her dad was a preacher. The *mayor* line actually is from her mother side.

Obviously your opinion doesn't count as she (Cynthia Erivo) got an Oscar nomination for Harriet from People whose opinion actually counts, so whatever

I instinctively didn’t like her .. and when I found out what she said about black Americans .. it was confirmed … and it’s sad she is playing blacks American heroes … boooooo .. and I hope her career turns to trash … she will never get my support.
