ariana grande stole the show! her comedic timing, all the little gestures and nuances and on top of that her outstanding vocal delivery. she will win an oscar for sure

Re: Jeff Goldblum. Not likely... Jonathan Bailey is actually more likely I think in this category, as he is singing and dancing in addition to just acting. He also plays a pretty central character in the story (albeit perhaps more important in the second half). Bailey also has a lot more screen time than Goldblum, who doesn't show up until the third act of this movie.
@BenFriedman916Ай бұрын
So should have clarified this in the video but my logic was Goldblum gets paraded out as the beloved actor taking on this role and they give him the FYC campaign as a thank you even if he doesn’t get nominated. To be honest the reason I didn’t mention Bailey is as you also clocked… I believe he’s more likely next year as his role is much bigger in act 2 of the play
@mervyngreene6687Ай бұрын
@@BenFriedman916 I think that Goldblum has a very good chance. He would be an "easy" nominee.
@OdditiesofTylerАй бұрын
I think Production Design is their biggest lock. The sets were mostly practical and with all the behind the scenes footage they’ve been releasing, voters will get a chance to see that they are physically there and often even complete 360 environments.
@BenFriedman916Ай бұрын
I think everyone who is saying this in my comments is correct. When brainstorming I knocked it a few pegs because of the cgi element of the movie which is strong but ultimately I don’t think that will play as big of a factor as I thought :) Thanks for watching and hope you consider subscribing if not already :)
@OdditiesofTylerАй бұрын
@ Will do! I like how you categorized each possibility, I do this in my head sometimes 🤣
@JessegarseeyaАй бұрын
Imo Ariana from the first song her incredible high notes , was insane ,for me it’s a lock , and I would pick her to twin so far need to see the substance still
@ButterlyBАй бұрын
There wasn’t a lot of CGI though the sets were all practical, the train & tulips were even real… the magic, flying, animals, and anything else that was obvious was CGI yes. But like 90-95% of the film was practical.
@fp30eАй бұрын
Probably a lot more than 5%
@ButterlyBАй бұрын
@ percentages work differently & I’m not sure how they measure it, hence why I made an estimate. Whether it’s 5-10% or 15, still not much CGI was used
@fp30eАй бұрын
@@ButterlyB Not a problem. I think there was a lot more CGI especially some of the crazy flying. But the set did not look like late 1800's, so it lost credibility.
@ButterlyBАй бұрын
@@fp30e I mentioned the flying in the initial comment! And it didn’t lose credibility cause look at the stage props and costumes… it’s very similar. Also, OZ is supposed to have a modern look to it, so it’s not suppose to equally look like our 1800s.
@fp30eАй бұрын
@@ButterlyB Hello again, I think you might be wrong there, or perhaps I am. It is supposed to set pre Wizard of Oz. At the start of Wicked the camera is panning, and you see Dorothy, The Tin Man, Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion running towards Oz. So it has to be set in the same time period. I'm not sure how it can be pre Oz then. But there you go. There is so much hype on this movie, to know what is real or not. Thank you for your return comments.
@JimmyJim2uАй бұрын
I think production design is a safe bet along with picture, supporting actress and costume design. Sound and makeup/hairstyling are strong possibilities. Maybe actress and visual effects. Less likely are director, screenplay and editing. Not sure about cinematography. Supporting actor would be Jonathan Bailey but that's a long shot.
@fp30eАй бұрын
The production design is just stage sets and does not reflect the time period this movie is set in. A lot of the movie is out of focus. I thought Cynthia stole the movie.
@BenFriedman916Ай бұрын
I think you are correct with production design and I made to much of a deal of voter bias against a movie with cgi getting production design. Ultimately I highly doubt any actor will get nominated for Wicked; however, part 2 I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bailey get in as his role is expanded in act 2 of the play
@DJGNYCАй бұрын
The very idea that you even considered Jeff Goldblum (& not Jonathan Bailey?) makes me question all of your picks here. Hot take-“Wicked” will not be an awards juggernaut in general but Ariana will be nominated everywhere she possibly can be.
@PowerDivaАй бұрын
Re: Cynthia Erivo... a lot of people are saying if Wicked does well, even if you don't think her performance is the best part of the film? She'll still get the nomination as the lead character. I beg to differ with that. You don't have to look any further than last year, when Margot Robbie missed out for Barbie, despite it being in Best Picture and nabbing 8 total nominations including supporting actor. I could see Cynthia Erivo getting a snub too, especially with such a strong year.
@mervyngreene6687Ай бұрын
I agree. She has no chance of being nominated! She has almost every "Academy bias" against her. Her performance is in: 1) a musical; 2) a (romantic) comedy; 3) a "special effects" movie
@PowerDivaАй бұрын
@@mervyngreene6687 I wouldn't really call Wicked a romantic comedy, or even really a comedy. It's definitely a full-fledged musical and the special effects apply though. I think she has a chance, I just think it's small one... mostly because this year is tough with a lot of great performances. She would have to be absolutely spectacular to break through over some of the other options. It could happen... I just think that it won't.
@PowerDivaАй бұрын
Re: Production Design. Let's look at last year's winner of this category, Poor Things.... which was primarily CGI (including CGI animals also). If Poor Things can win Production Design (over Barbie no less) then certainly Wicked can get a nomination.
@seattlemleeАй бұрын
You have a picture of John M Chu and you don't think he get nominated? No best picture nomination? Those are the two slam dunks!
@BenFriedman916Ай бұрын
Unless I misspoke I am positive Wicked is in my best picture nominations as in my current rankings I have it in the top 5 post seeing the movie… John M. Chu is a bit more of a toss up given how competitive that category is this year and the fact that he is in direct competition with another blockbuster franchise in Dune Part 2
@Grayson_BakerАй бұрын
I know it sounds weird but I would like to see Part 2 before they give the accolades. It's meant to be seen as a whole. Like LOTR i like to think all three films contributed to it's Oscar success.
@Career_ConceptsАй бұрын
It doesn’t use alot of cgi. It built a lot of the set
@natesnacks7829Ай бұрын
Your list and reasoning is perfect, although i would swap production design and visual effects because a lot of effort went into production here. Just the campaign universal pushing with the “9 million tulips planted” alone will get them in. I think visuals might get nominated but its more of a spoiler. Its going to ride the barbie wave for sure and get every nomination except director and best actress but they might throw those in for shits and giggles because honestly every year a random director gets in and the Academy loves cynthia, she might get nominated in both parts. Supporting actor is so weak this year, Goldblum actually might get honored here. Hear me out!!!! the Academy loves to nominate randoms in the the supporting actor spots. i wouldn’t be shocked if the Academy just say fuck it and make him an oscar nominee in name alone so he can have that title. Everything everywhere all at once showed that a tide rise all boats for sure.
@SS4LuxrayАй бұрын
And with Goldblum, there’s a legacy narrative Universal can run for him too.

Locks: - Best Picture - Supporting Actress - Production Design - Costumes Possible: - Best Actress - Makeup - Sound - Screenplay - Cinematography Unlikely - Director - Editing - Supporting Actor - Visual Effects
@Sharpe1502Ай бұрын
They all sang live so I think it’s getting sound. And Les Miz won hair & makeup, so I think that is also a lock.
@shadysorkin9214Ай бұрын
@@Sharpe1502 It's definitely likely but not a lock imo. Sound typically goes to more bombastic films like Top Gun for example. Wicked has nowhere close to the makeup and hair of les mis. There's Elphaba who is green and... that's about it? Films like the substance and Beetlejuice 2 for example are far more likely. Obviously it all depends on how much the academy loves the film. EEAAO basically got every nomination and even won some awards it probably should not have because of how much they loved the movie (like original song and supporting actress).

Hair/Makeup and Sound are also locks.

Ariana Grande (or her people) have been BRILLIANT! She clearly learned a lot from Catherine Zeta Jones. Glinda (like Velma Kelly) is really a LEADING role! However, she didn't have a chance to win (or even get nominated for) Best Actress.

Cinematography was dire on Wicked. Half the film is out of focus. You dont point the camera at a light source. Costumes is a no no. In one dance some of the dances appear to be wear modern patterened black tights. The film is set in late 1800's

@@DJGNYC The Wizard of Oz was set in that period. At the beginning of the movie you see Dorothy, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow running toward Oz. It's not set in 2024! Wicked is pre- The Wizard of Oz (movie).

@@ldfm-z5r Hello there. Thank you for your interesting reply. I don't doubt what you are saying. But another thought. Maybe the film-makers of Wicked intended it to be seen as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz as a better selling point, because Wicked means nothing on it's own if you are not aware of the stage show. The start of the movie you will see Dorothy, The Tin Man, Scarecrow and The Cowardly Lion running towards Oz. Take care.
