I'm a light technician, I do concert shows. One free tip for you.... Use Kitchen Wax Paper as a diffuser, it can hold some heat without creating a fire hazard. Also, use Polyisocyanurate Foam Board Insulation, you can get it in Lowe's with one side with a aluminum layer, that will hold heat and will help for reflection or if you use pink foam, glue a aluminum foil layer inside.
@kimnobles7687

Hey, I work with pink foam and LEDs all the time, but nowhere near this scale. Do the LEDs really give off enough heat that the aluminum is necessary?

Depending how strong power are the leds. Is not about is necessary, its just a recommendation, you can work with what you have. Aluminum foil its cheap, why not? The leds I do use are mounted in a heat sink and needs a fan for cooling. The leds on a tape for decoration you can touch it with your finger, almost no heat. The aluminum is not only for heat, also everytime you work with current, you have the potential to create a spark and then a fire. And the aluminum are good for reflect the light like a mirror does, making it more bright efficient, like a flashlight.

Parchment paper is even more heat resistant, and a little more defuse than wax paper. I’ve used it for photography diffuser. May not be as water resistant though; tends to get more transparent when wet

I realize this video is a couple of years old so this might have been mentioned. I used to build very elaborate haunted houses and projections were common. A give away to that effect is you can see the beam from the projector, especially if mist or fog is used. I solved this problem by shooting the projector through neutral density filters for video or stage lights. Window tinting will work too. Some times we had to adjust the brightness on the projector to balance the effect with the filters, but it worked great. People would see the image but could not see the source. This portal is awesome. You guys did a excellent job with it.

I made it and it looked super cool and I am going to upload a video of it soon. I added fake moss which woked really well and is something you should try. I also noticed something after watching the video many times while building it. For about 1/8 of a second when the first clip starts to fade out the portal effect disappears. Did you edit the footage to show the portal effect in daylight? That would explain why it was so bright. It makes sense why you would do that because you cannot really see all off the detail of the stone at night and editing it would really help make a good opening for the video.

I used some old paneling pieces and glued the paneling to the backs of the Tomb Stones with Heavy Duty Construction Glue and then screwed them to the 2" Pink construction foam. I don't believe you will have to buy that thick of foam boards. ( I make large columns, tombstones, and grave markers. Some are hollow inside and some are 3 layers of foam.) My experiences one and a half inch will work in most creations, if you toothpick and glue well. You will want to add a inside box with a hole for pvc pipe to run through though. ( Small foam box in side of column form). I would suggest the pink, blue or green close cell insulation sheets over the white open cell foam. Pink tends to break easier & the others carve nicer . Tip, the foam breaks like sheet rock, so you can just score your foam & break it over your knee, but that hard with the 2" or 3" foam, a table saw or jig saw works good for the thicker foam.

Super cool! If you paint the base black, and then add the light colors all the black will pop in the cracks, might save some time “detailing”

First video of yours I have seen. Do you use hot wires to cut foam? If not you might try it. I think it might be easier than a blade and maybe cleaner. Also, have you thought about making the screen in to sections or strips (pretty wide) and not attaching to the bottom? It might be possible to pass through and it would seem more like a true portal.

i had an idea- maybe put a slit in the material so that you could actually walk through - i just dont know if it would affect the projection too badly.

Very cool project. Can’t wait to build it and improve on it, of course, like any maker, but please provide the full specs on materials. Just putting “projector” and a link to Amazon doesn’t work, because apparently that page doesn’t exist on Amazon anymore so all I get is a “page not found” response on Amazon’s site. I. Know you prob get referral cash, but I assume this happens with many items that disappear off Amazon, but if we don’t know the name, model or other info, we can’t find them.

Hey guys, I’ve been obsessed with your videos! Set design was something I wanted to get into this year and videos like these are so clear and concise, that it makes learning a lot easier 🙏🏾. I was wondering how many days does a project like this take? And is there a schedule you guys followed for each step?
@nwstraith
@nwstraith 3 жыл бұрын
Ya know, you could use that projection technique for all kinds of stuff. You could use some heavy wire to make a frame to hang a sheet like a curtain using that material you used and then project monsters or anything on it. Could make it look like a ghost was floating around in your front yard. Maybe even curve the fabric slightly to improve it's viewing angle.

AWESOME! I LOVE working with the pink foam insulation. So far I haven't made anything 1:1 scale but I have built a lot of 1/6th scale structures with it. I have plans to do something like this but a whole room that looks like the inside of a pyramid, tomb castle etc. Just need my own house do do it in.

What mp4 (or video) do you guys use to display in the Portal? I'm looking for a video that would look cool in there, like the one you used, but can't find anything I like. For projections like that do you have a company/website you typically buy from? Thanks!!
