30ips was actually used on tons of pop rock and hip hop jazz and records of every stripe....+3/185 +6/185 or +3/250 +3/370 or whatever level the engineer wanted which was the level you aligned the bias tape machine to before you started a project as an assistant you carried a "tweeker" at all times to align the machines...not just classical actually your classical guys may have used more digital tape than anything.....30ips was used to toss your hf noise up an octave make it a little less audible. 15ips was "noisier" but the low end was really nice. Ask those reggae guys! Plus 15ips you got more songs onto a reel! I know I'm a dinosaur.
@TheDestinationSound8 жыл бұрын
+Louis Alfred very true. I would say 15ips was standard because tape is expensive (15 minutes verses 30 minutes of recording time). But yet when available use 30ips because it sounds better and less hiss.

These are seriously fantastic tutorials. UAD expects everyone who buys their digital products to already be an expert on the plug-in's corresponding hardware. So thanks! You're a life-saver!

Hi, well the first book is all about Dynamics, like compression, gating, etc... The second book is all about spectral processing; equalizers, filters, etc... The third book (coming up) will be about mixing theory, mixing consoles, etc.. So if it's really the mixing theory you're looking for it's best to wait for the 3rd book. Cheers, Wick.

I'm wondering if analog tape sound is about wow, flutter, hiss, and other, normally unwanted artifacts or does real tape simply impart a depth of image as well as soft edges that are more forgiving than digital to a performance.

How much does this plug-in tax your DSP though? If you use this on every track in your DAW won't that kill all of your available DSP for your project? To my understanding, I was led to believe it's better to use when direct recording through a UAD device through the "console" software and record the plug-in effects real time when allowable and then remove them when done so the recording has the desired effect and then you can free up the DSP for other plug-ins to be used on the daw. Is this not right? Any info. you can give to this matter will be appreciated.
@ronnieperez76508 жыл бұрын
+sinistergrey3 It's actually not too bad. You'd think it would kill your DSP but it really doesn't. My Apollo with the DUO processor is able to still load lots of stuff with it. I think it was designed to be strapped to many channels simultaneously, so they must have accommodated with DSP requirement
@sinistergrey38 жыл бұрын
***** My Apollo only has one DSP chip though so this may be why I'm having to watch my usage. If I try to put one on every channel I get a DSP over use prompt.
@ronnieperez76508 жыл бұрын
sinistergrey3 Record your tracks one at a time. If you want to do every channel at once you'll need a more powerful DSP chip like the Quad-core. Or you can buy a few and chain them together for more CPU. But honestly, I have a DUO Apollo and I just take my time and do my recording one track at a time. It works great.
@sinistergrey38 жыл бұрын
***** yeah that's what I've been doing too lol. I think it's important to focus on recording one good track at time and laying down a good rhythm foundation so you can focus on song structure and then tweak with any plug ins later and shape the tone as you wish. I love the mic pre's and natural sounding compression you get with the apollo, ten million times better sounding than my previous audio interface. UA makes some great sounding equipment and software.
@ronnieperez76508 жыл бұрын
sinistergrey3 it's funny how much people worry about workflow and speed, but a couple of decades ago people had to literally cut and paste pieces of tape on a tape deck, and have to do a LOT of work just to do any post-production work. These days it's so easy to just route audio. Like, if you run out of DSP capability, do the important stuff first while you're tracking. Then route your audio back out into the "Virtual Channels" to add more plugins to that signal. Zero audio degradation when you do that (or just drop the plugins into the DAW I guess.. but I hate using my DAW for plugins, too much chance for crashes) By the way, I'll just add this: The Studer A800 is the best plugin UA have ever made. There's a lot of great ones, but the A800 is the most authentic tape sound I've ever used, and it gives so much character to an otherwise stale recording. :)

It might depend if you have the vst2 or vst3 version installed. Whichever you have, try the other.
@TheDestinationSound8 жыл бұрын
Is this just a glorified EQ and compressor (with added white noise)??? To me the experience on tape is a wider deeper more expansive sound. Seems like its not doing any of that. I don't think it would be magic analog but seems pointless, why not just EQ and compress. Is it doing anything else?
@Ledjent8 жыл бұрын
+Destination Sound It is doing exactly the same what you said, but you can't really achieve the same characteristic with using eqs, comps and even distortion. It's like when you're using different compressors for e.g. 1176 and i dont know... fairchild - both do the same job, but every unit 'speaks' differently and that''s why you would chose one over the another on a particular track. Personally I am a big fan of adding a modelled saturation and another reason for that is that you won't achieve the same results as in the case of these tape saturators, because they were made to sounds as close as possible to the real deal. Plus another important thing: don't forget about the price of the real tape recorder:P

Nice tutorial until the sound samples. You need to have the "auto calibration" ON .... if it's off then it's just stuck on what ever was used first... those sound samples are not typical of what this plugin sounds like.

+Ronnie Perez I know a few studio's that still have them, mater of fact I gave a lecture in Nanjing University in China where they even had one! Yeah they're rare (Especially in good maintained condition) but they are still out there! The benefits of tracking 'in the box' are obvious.. but if it fits in your workflow and studio to record on tape I'd say : Do it! Why not, right?
@Ledjent8 жыл бұрын
+J.B. Burke Jesus. You think anyone in the home studio environment can afford it? Even some professional studios don't have tape machines.

***** lol.. exactly. If I could afford a Studer I would have one. But they cost more than a car... lol. The plugin is as close as I need to get for now.
@GimmeDangerRecords8 жыл бұрын
then get a cheaper reel to reel? hahaha. you don't NEED a studer. but plug ins will never match up to an actual studer. if you want the tape sound, get a reel to reel. as I said there are great deals out there. I had just gotten a full functional tascam 32 and it sounds great as well. and for $150. I don't think there is anything wrong with these cheaper machines (even though back then they were more moola) that one new popular musician Mac Demarco has recorded his last two albums on a tascam 38-8. they sound amazing. and if he would've told everyone he used a studer in the first place.. everyone wouldve believed him anyways. hahaha.
