To those that don't know, because they are using an axe instead of a proper hammer, the rock becomes more mischievous, more alive.. it enters the climber and becomes them entirely. You look up on belay, but for what, to see your buddy consumed. Escape with the proper tools. Always be careful.

@@tyler___3 As you know, the earth matrix requires sacrifice before extracting ore. She thinks that you are mining her womb, pulling from her alchemy, as you swing the axe. Honnold talks about this being a problem with certain rock faces, and although he always uses proper tools, he still recommends a sacrifice before climbing. A young ram or bull is perfect in summer or spring, and then virgin goats are recommended in winter or fall. But of course this can all be avoided by simply using a hammer - as is the point of the video.

I will confirm that the pointed side of a "proper" hammer is particularly... special. Picture the thin bird-beak laying flat against the rock on one side of the crack. The wide face just slides along the rock and basically slides/bumps over the impact-point. I recall striking/aiming the pinted side of the hammer at the corner. That is aiming at the corner where the "pin" and the rock meet. Yes, striking the rock. That "move" could be tough with an ice-axe hammer. Ice-axes are also very good for removing buried rocks in rocky-dirt driveways in the desert. It's like the bestest tool for that. Hmmm, not mechanized anyway. Dan

Next time you feel inclined to mock someone for using safety gear, remember that the gear exists because at least one person died or was permanently disabled. A few people you never mock: the spotter, the belayer, the guy yelling at you for being unsafe, and the guy being a little paranoid about safety. They all have their reasons, they all are looking out for your well being.

@@totally_not_a_bot I know how to do many types of climbing. It was mostly a joke. Everyone climbs for their own reasons. I don’t care for aid or ice climbing. That’s just me. I’m sure Patagonia is epic. It never hurts having all the skills for all the types of climbing. I’ve learned that watching climbing vs actually climbing are two different world. Watching is rarely impressive. Climbing is one of the most exhilarating things on earth and that’s why I do it.
