Dirt bike = narrow tire Tanks = long and narrow tracks Tractors = tall and narrow tire Mall crawler = widest possible tire Bru!

Tractor tires are wide when compared to a truck or SUV of similar weight. The height makes them look skinny but they are pretty wide too. Also wheeled vehicles used off-road in construction and logging tend to have wide tires.

Short and to the point, and 99.9% correct. There are just a few caveats that "narrow tyres are better" is just too much of a blanked statement to cover. It is true, but to an extend. If it were universally true, all overlanders would run bicycle tyres. Caveat 1: There is a limit to how narrow a tyre can be, before it can't be as tall anymore. Tall narrow tyres detach from the rim and/or tear sidewalls much easier when sideloaded. Caveat 2: Sometimes you want your vehicle to "float" over some terrain, and not "cut" through it, because if you cut through sand and mud, and you bottom out, you're seriously stuck, where a vehicle with wider tyres could have floated on top of whatever you cut through. Caveat 3: Narrower tyres are worse at on-road braking, especially in turns, so if considerable portion of your time is at highway speeds, don't go too narrow. Caveat 4: Narrower tyres often can't carry the same weight, so if you have a massive overlander, there's only so narrow you may go. There may be something I'm missing, but aside from those situations, tall narrow tyres will work better than wide ones. I'm running 32 x 9.5 R 16 and they work great for me for regular overlanding and light rock crawling.

This video is the cherry on top for my decision to switch to narrow 35s! Im curious how much my mpg's will improve with the 4 cyl diesel. Thanks for the information and clarity on the topic! Subbed!

With mud a wider tyre may find more traction from the sides of the ruts. Another thing is a conventionally sized tyre (say a 265) may provide more road grip than a skinny on the road (225). Other than that wide tyres are eye-candy and a healthy profit for the tyre company

How narrow is narrow? Standard tyres I see are 265/65r17. Would going down to 225 or 235 be considered skinny or are you suggesting 195’s or 205’s

When deflated, wider tyre not neccessarily increase contact patch, at least not as propotiobally as narrower tyres. E.g a 285r17 from 60psi deflated to 30psi only increased patch by 20% while narrower 255r17 at 80psi deflated to 40psi increased patch by 35% which made them a lot closer in contact patch size than people might have imagined. It is far closer than 285:255

You did not express a view on narrow vs wide in respect of soft sand/ sand conditions....?

not what I was expecting ; 4x4 marketing people actually talking some common sense ; but then Iron Man don't sell tyres ;) Mud driving : the old say of narrow tyres cut a track refers to formed dirt roads ; the roads no one should be driving on when they are wet/boggy . Just for interest ; I have 225 75 16" , still nearly too wide imo

But wider provide more grip and traction 🤔

Narrow tyres mean more pressure per square inch, thereby increasing traction. Wider tires offer benefits when turning and helps with cornering stability

The local P platers with their mud tyres destroy the public sand roads here.
