Excellent. Some karateka actually trained like this, even 30 years ago. My sensei/shihan/mentor was 5th dan Kyokushin, 3rd dan Judo, 1st dan in both Akido and classical Jiu Jitsu (not BJJ). This is what we did, with even more emphasis on grappling (takedowns, locks, breaks, strangulations etc). Was quite a journey. RIP shihan.

Won't know till after the contest, will we? The Kudo practitioner probably more street fighting orientated than the Judoka. Depends on many things, including the rules of the contest (if any), and the mentality of the contestants.

I know people are saying they have issues with the head gear but I think it's really good for training because you really get to make full contact but you are all able to go to work the next day without being mangled. Not everyone is a pro fighter,I know some doctors that are serious about training but can't be having their eye swolle shut 👍

i am a kudo fighter! the helmet helps a lot because not only it protects but it gives a really great real street fight simulation factor for these reasons: your sight is tunneled and gets white as more as you breath in it; you have really low air flow because of the low surface of the holes on the plexiglas, like when you're afraid to death; you feel no pain on your face (like adrenaline does when afraid) but you still get the shock and get stunned when hit. train an hour with it and finish with half an hour sparring! after you do it you can see suckerpunches much better with bare eyes! and most of the times react without sleeping! if you get to sleep a pair of seconds, you feel on heavy drugs when you wake up, but you can still fight dangerously! Expecially if the street moron has no skills and just tried to have a coward knockout on you

i do admire how they embrace strikes, throws and grappling. really unique... but i think mma is still a superior environment for training because of the influence of traditional boxing. if they took away the head gear, and got serious about winning, the punches wouldn't be so indulgent but i understand this looks cool for spectators, fun to do, and also a way for traditional karate practitioners to really push their limits in all the was modern karate wont let them.

I feel this martial art would fill the gaps for Kyukuhin: head punches - improved takedowns - grappling etc.... the only downside I think would be: less amazing kicks ..... since Kyukuhin practioners improve their kicks to supplement for the (no face punches) rule .....

the full head protection instead shifts the emphasis to throws and grappling. a lack of head kicks may be less flashy, but low kicks, sweeps, liver roundhouse, and spinning back kicks to the body would be cool to see be refined...

Best wishes to you in obtaining your goals :) I used to practice various martial arts until a bad back injury from a job I had at the time took me out of being able to take formal classes. That was four or so years ago, and now it's a permanent condition, but I still train from home as much as I can. Kudo looks really interesting and I have a background mostly in Judo and Taekwondo, and I've worked out my own system that uses what moves I'm still capable of and basically pressure test them to the point that they prove functional in a fight. It doesn't look very refined, but I work with what I've got left. I would love to get to a point where I could take up classes again and hopefully achieve my dream of teaching one day. Kudo looks fascinating, and even if I can't find a school that teaches it, I hope to learn more about it either way. I hope that you are living life well and that you have achieved the goals you set. I hope that you can reach your future goals and dreams in life as well. :D

I think this is a brilliant idea to have the protective head gear. I just think you are going to last longer (without developing as much head trauma as with other forms of striking martial arts, boxing/kick boxing). While gaining skills to defend yourself/others if every needed. Sure you can do this by only learning Brazlian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling or other Grappling based martial arts, but I think learning effective striking is important as well.

IndigoXYZ18 kyokushin was like this but no protective gears and gloves. After many serious injuries occurred, they decided to put some rules in and changed it to be a little more like sport. All traditional karate started out wild but then changed into sport with a bunch of regulations. Taekwondo ITF back then was good but then.... you get the idea.
@IndigoXYZ18

Ryuseiken Kyokushin Yeah I had heard they banned face punches to prevent cuts. That said, when the glove technology had advanced, the rules should have advanced with it. Personally I think Kudo should ditch the headgear and use proper modern shin and knee pads and MMA gloves. We still need to invent proper elbow / forarm pads that don't constantly have to be adjusted. They have them for things like paintball, but they aren't suitable for combat sports, the trick is to anchor the pads to the gloves or hand. Padding for the back of the heel would be great too, they have them on those point Karate foot guards and they wouldn't be hard to attach to a shin guard.

Ryuseiken Kyokushin I'm familiar with Lethwei. I mean personally I'd have preffered if Kyokushin had gon the Lethwei route and hadn't limited itself even without propper glove technology being avalible, but I understand why they nerfed the rules given their concerns, I just don't get why they didn't update the rules when better protective padding became avalible.

I'm not an expert, but I heard Kudo was developed by a kyokushin guy who Mas Oyama had told to develop competition rules that could showcase more of karate than the knockdown format. However, when the Karate+Judo rules were ready, Oyama thought that knockdown was already so established worldwide that starting a new ruleset from scratch wasn't worth it. However, he allowed the developer to split from kyokushinkai to go his own way without hard feelings.

I feel that point sparring can be beneficial as a drill but I think that karate tournaments need to start going full contact kyokushin style but allow punches to the face. And possibly takedowns to make it more realistic. Also they should have a 15 second standup rule because the whole point of a karate tournament is to find out who's the best karate ka not who's the best grappler.

They rush headlong and swing. Anyone with any sense of distance and proper striking would dismantle them. They all seem very strong in the judo aspect of it though. In the actual fights they seem to throw more spinning backfists than proper jabs.

This looks good but I'd replace the headguards with shin insteps and only allow visorless headguards at amateur level. Kudo is a stepping stone to MMA

Helmets are much better. I would feel a lot safer to fight in competition with these enclosed helmets on. Eye and nose damage is VERY serious issue
@ronki23
@ronki23 6 жыл бұрын
nagy zoli It's not realistic fighting with helmets as you're not used to getting hit in the face if you get into a real fight. Competition experience should always help you; a helmet is unrealistic.
@nagyzoli

Usually the moment you are hit in the face the fight is 90% of the time over(Look up bouncer fight videos on youtube, usually the fight ends with an instant KO at the first hit in the head). You can not fight with a broken nose or broken jaw or swollen eye. Also, you do not get into professional level before being an amateur. That takes years, lots and lots of it. On strong blow to the head is enough to cause permanent brain damage (one hook punch to the temple). So why risk all this for the sake of "realism"? There is no such thin as getting used to hit in the face unless you are doing light sparring or point system. It;s a very serious issue, the brain colliding with the skull as a result of blunt force trauma(main cause of death in car accidents at low speeds), you can not shrug it off as "getting used to". Ok, the select few athletes who compete professionally, they have a super fit and strong body, and they know the risks, ok, theire problem. But at full contact amateur level I think it's esential to have this enclosed helmet

nagy zoli there's no headguards in MMA and MMA is both safer and more realistic than boxing or Kickboxing

nagy zoli MMA fights don't have headguards and they don't end with just one punch.

The only issue I have with the headgear is that they seem to rely on it for defense. Do they know how to move out of the way, or bob and weave. Have they heard of blocking or parrying. All they seem to do is attack.

You have a point but as far as I know bobbing and weaving when kicks and elbows are allowed ain't a good idea

God this is so awesome the only problem is there are lots of martial arts out which are really effective and fun but the type of martial art is not usually the real issue. The real issue is your trainer and the gym. People watching this might be really interested in daido juko ( or any other martial art)but there might not be a good gym or trainer near them and thats really bad.
