Hi Caleb, I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 phone and I cannot for the life of me turn the wifi direct off! I went into Settings>Connections>WiFi Direct, tap on it, it shows me available devices, but I can't turn it off or make my phone not visible to other devices in my apartment bldg. Please help!!!

I have 2 phones and a tablet. One phone is a s3 the other is a note2. What I want to do is move everything to my tablet. If I send a picture folder from one phone named " camaro " to the tablet then I send another picture folder from the other phone named " camaro " to the tablet. Will it combined the 2 or would I just have 2 folders named "camaro " in the tablet ??

Ok so i bought the new Lenovo A7000 and it has wifi direct in it but it calls it WLAN direct anyway when i want to send something (ex. picture)by wifi direct i click on the picture and choose send and it gives me which way to send and for some reason it doesnt have wifi direct in the share options but the phone have wifi direct! among the share options it has shareit which is an app to share using wifi i dont know whether its wifi direct or hotspot but its fast as wifi direct....so i guess lenovo removed wifi direct option and put shareit instead?? plz reply

Thanks for the direct and simple explanation of Wi-Fi direct. Before watching your video, I thought it had something to do with an actual Wi-Fi connection and not what it really is.

Best answer I can give is possibly/eventually lol. Theoretically streaming media is and should be possible but as of right now there just doesn't seem to be a transfer protocol made to stream media or transfer content beyond mobile to mobile. I got really excited when I found Intel's wifi direct program 'my wifi dashboard' for my laptop but try as i might I can't get it work with my S3 or any other phones. There's so much potential here just need to find a way to tap into it lol!

I need to know how to use my phone as a hot spot. I was very surprised when you stated right off the bat that there were no practical uses. Isn't one of the applications for wifi direct to turn your phone into a mini hot spot, using the data service plan from your phone? Or maybe I got the information wrong.

No wi-di isnt a tethering application, you can't use it to tether or pass through internet connections its strictly for file transfer currently

yes it does, go into settings, then wifi, and in the bottom right corner you should see a button called 'wifi direct'

with some JB builds/updates wifi direct directory or whatever still exists it just gets moved, try going into settings, wifi, then at the bottom should be 2 buttons, Scan on the left and Wifi Direct on the right

You can stream media to Samsung Smart TVs using Allshare Play after you've connected via wifi direct, great for popping up your photos, playing a movie or music :-)

Saracen Gaming Use ES file explorer in phone. Options>Network>Remote Manager... Your phone and PC should be in same network. Use FTP s/w like filezilla in PC. Waiting for your comment

Go to Intel's website and download 'My WiFi Dashboard' software, it make sure you have the proper 'proset WiFi' drivers installed and you'll be able to use the WiFi Dashboard to connect with devices and transfer files via WiDi (WiFi direct)

Its not the same on my devices Moto G 1st gen / Tegra Note 7 the wifi direct is in wifi then the settings with 3 dots it say is connected but try both devices to share file from ES File explorer the wifi direct dont show as an option

yes both devices need to have & or be wifi direct enabled, find the specific tv model & google its specs for wifi direct specifically & remember just b/c a device has 'wifi' doesnt mean it has 'wifi direct'

wifi direct can do a lot more. I have a samsung es6800 smart tv, has wifi direct, I can sent music, video, pictures to it. In many ways it is replacing dnla. My s3 phone also has dnla allshare cast, but when I turn on wifi direct is asks to turn off allshare cast, as they do the same thing. Pity you can have links on youtube comments else I'd send you some sample links. Google for "samsung smart tv wifi direct"

Thanks for the information. I too want to learn how to wirelessly stream live video as close to real-time as possible (very low latency). Let me know if anyone has made any progress on this. I think the WiFi Direct could be a great solution since it's optimized for a one on one (P2P) communication.

Caleb Sheldrake Hi Caelb, Thanks for the info. I still wonder if what you are trying to stream, has to be from a saved file or if it can be LIVE streaming via Wi-Fi Direct? Here's kinda a dumb example, say you are at a live sports event (football) and your friend has to go to the bathroom, can you stream the live plays to her phone if you both are connected via Wi-Fi Direct? How does she "see" them on her phone? When I tried this w/ a friend, using my video camera on my Samsung smart phone, we could not get the live video to display on his Samsung smart phone. Not sure why? Anyone w/ any experience on this? I could play saved video and send it to him as a file via Wi-Fi direct, but that was as far as we got.

oh incase anyone was wondering if you can use it whilst mobile hotspot is in use, you can't.. so if you are using mobile hotspot on phone and connecting a tablet to it to surf the web ' as a lot of people do' it won't work as tethering is switched off when you use wifi direct. both devices need to be separately connected to the Internet, either via wifi or GSM mobile

Could not find your Facebook page. Tried and tried but no success. What ed you video about file transfer through WiFi direct. Worked great between my cell phone galaxy S lll and my galaxy Tab E, however was not successful with my Asus memo pad HD 7. The Samsung totally recognized the Asus and the window pop up came up to except or decline but all my transfers failed. They were not large files very small for that matter. Can you shed some onto as to what is going wrong or tips and tricks I can try to make it work. I was thinking maybe there was an incompatible issue of somekind.
