Mum commented recently that for years he'd change radio station in the car if it came on. He's now very elderly but he and I were popping out for a Tim Hortons and what came on the radio but Annie and Northern Lights, he commented how much he f'ing hated this song, I turned it up and we both sang it at the top of our voices in the car. Thing is, this song was a hit around the time that I was having a great time with a girl named Sarah and the summer that year was good and i was carefree and.. well. Late 1980s. I'm about 8 years old. We are all in my mum and dad's old volvo going away on summer holiday...and this comes on the radio. "The nothern lights are in my mind.." that haunting refrain buried itself in my 8 year old brain. Something spiritual and beautiful about this song, and connecting it with that childhood memory stuck in my head. I didn't even hear the whole song I don't think - dad was skimming through the stations. Hears the thing: I never heard that song again. Ever. I didn't know what it was called or who it was by, but some fragment of it stuck in my head and I would find myself humming the chorus YEARS later. Eventually I forgot about it completely until very recently - out of the blue that memory, the car journey, that song. Popped in my head...so I googled it and found it. It's as perfect as I remember it. What testament to a song that single part-hearing of it over 3 decades ago buried itself in my mind and heart deep enough to re-emerge! This is a special song. It's striking, reading the comments how many people feel a deeply yearning nostalgic connection to it. It does seem to call out across the years to people and deeply evoke memories. Haunting.

Quality music from a quality band, takes me back to 1978 and a time when music was far more innovative than it is today.

I was 12 when this was on and I was mildly obsessed with Annie, I taped the song off the radio, complete with DJ talking all over the start and played back to back it until my Dad had finally had enough and it 'disappeared'. I haven't heard it much since but this is really brilliant, she is still a beautiful and talented lady.

I remember this song as clear as day as a four year old , it was forever on the radio at the time, just thought it was a nice pleasant track - still love it now at age 50 and this is coming from a staunch soul, dance and rock follower and fan.

I remember seeing this wonderful band at York University back around that time. Magical sounds like this cross decades with ease, I think.

Wonderful to see this again, almost 31 years to the day of seeing it go out live in 1978. Very nostalgic, and superb to see Annie looking and sounding so fabulous. I agree with comments below on the addition of trumpet parts to this recording. Lovely.

Whenever I watch this I am reminded of Waylon Jennings’ comment about Linda Ronstadt, which is also so true of Annie « There are two sorts of guy in the world. Those who have a crush on her and those who have never heard of her « !
