I dont know who composed this music but they need an Emmy. Its as mesmerizing as the Star Wars score. It truly captures the essence of being in outerspace. Not only does it spark up nostalgia but it evokes emotion when you listen to it. I can literally feel myself plopping in front of my 13 inch TV and just clicking the power button and waiting for the music. Zapping each alien and working my way towards the harder boards. I remember obtaining the rollerball perk and being able to get under and around the aliens. That alone had me captured fan wise. Then to obtain the freezer. The music for each board really captured the feel of the board. It actually made me nervous and spooked out. It would be 11pm maybe up till midnight......i wanted to go get a bowl of cereal or ice cream but the music made me so nervous. I was even scared to look out the window. The zap sound of the wave gun empowered me but i knew that i wasnt a master. Once i was able to reach the lair where the Metroids were......it froze me because they were true monsters. Running out of missles truly made me quiver. I felt myself getting closer to the MOTHER BRAIN but these metroids wouldnt let up. I dont care what anyone says........this is the most perfect game. I love you Metroid

One of the very few games where I love every single track (except maybe Tourian). The order of the songs tell a perfect story with a beginning, rising action, climax, and resolution. Title theme: An awesome theme, showing the lonlyness and adventure. Brinstar: Upbeat and funky! Great for a first area, and place you return to. Norfair: Ominous, but something about it keeps you going. Kraid's lair: You enter, and immediately know something big is coming up. Ridley's lair: Very foreboding. You get a sense of danger. Tourian: Lonely, but beepy. Perfect for a final area. Mother Brain: You have made it to the final room. You have been stareing at your TV for a while, and just want to get it over with. This music displays the lack of emotion one might feel. Escape: RUN RUN GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE! DAMN IT STOP FALLING DOWN THE SHAFT!

***** I've only played the original and Super, but I always felt like Metroid did its best to not glorify combat - the lone badasses of most other games have nightmares about the weight of isolation and anxiety that Samus has to wade through. She soldiers on, but I never once thought she was having a good time. Sure, she gets lots of neat powers, but there's something about limited ammo and health as numbers instead of a meter that makes the player keep an eye on their resources even when their twitch-instincts say KILL KILL KILL.

kraid's lair gets the hype, but in terms of composition, norfair had the most jazzy music ever on a cart. the time signature, the full stop, the emotion of hysteria and confusion setting in as you encounter another dead end - used to imagine that the joints on the varia were rusting, a sort of acidic ectoplasm creeping into the circuitry... descending further into ridley's hideout, where a really hypnotic monotony of tones engages and ramps up the anxiety.. compelling samus into the futuristic structures deeeep within the catacombs of zebes, lined with holtz and dessageegas, and expansive corridors where you could imagine they dragged a mobile-tank mother brain down there to see the progress of the pirate hybridization processes...
