Explaining what I.G.Y. means (from Wikipedia): The "I.G.Y." of the title refers to the "International Geophysical Year", an event that ran from July 1957 to December 1958. The I.G.Y. was an international scientific project promoting collaboration among the world's scientists. Fagen's lyrics sarcastically discuss the widespread optimistic vision of the future at that time, including futuristic concepts such as solar-powered cities, a transatlantic tunnel, permanent space stations, and spandex jackets. The song criticizes this vision and offers a humorous critique on the naïveté of postwar optimism in America and the Western world. The "76" referred to in the song is 1976, the U.S. Bicentennial year.
@amyk9175

Ah, yes Bicentennial. Why have I never put that together with the 76 and “stars and stripes” in the lyrics? Silly me.I was a young child that year but I remember the hoopla surrounding that event.

Sorta. "IGY" in and of itself was the "International Geophysical Year" in 1956. I would say if anything the song is a blend of the optimism of the former and the kind of pro-American Space Race (as is referenced in the song) rhetoric of the Kennedy years.

Bro, this monster album was '82 and always considered part of the whole Steely Dan collection of jazz-pop genius. Steely Dan from '73 on wasn't even a "band," but songwriting/production duo Donald Fagen/Walter Becker(RIP) who some of us old-timers have been following for incredibly, 49 years now! But kudos to you now, better late than never . . . be sure and check out not only the rest of THE NIGHTFLY brilliance, but also EVERYTHING MUST GO and MORPH THE CAT from Donald.

So glad you did this. I don't even know how Fagen gets the sounds he gets. Always something unexpected. I keep telling other reactors unfamiliar with Steely Dan that they really hit their stride with Aja, then Gaucho; then I tell them they should check out this album and let me know if they could tell that is wasn't Steely Dan. Just wonderful, singular music that never lets me guess exactly what key the song's in! :)

I.G.Y.(International Geophysical Year). This song was from Donald Fagen's 1982 album "The Nightfly" and it was based on his growing up in the 1950s. The Year 1955 was classified as the International Geophysical Year which lasted from July 1,1957 to December 31, 1958.This period of time refers to an international science project that was going on at the time.

Part of Fagen's genius was/is his sense of the absurd. How many songs are written about bomb shelters, anyway? This coupled w/ his good, educated taste & innate musicality makes his stuff mad cool & always listenable. BTW: the lyric: "introduce me to that big blond... she's got a touch of Tuesday Weld" refers to the actress Tuesday Weld (a young, sexy blond pin-up, very hot in the early 60s) who horny guys from that era (D.F. included) must've fantasized about.

One of the things I most like about his singing is that it's imperfect - a little rough around the edges, and definitely not conventionally pretty. The music is so utterly pristine that - to me at any rate - it needs a singer with a more characterful voice, to save it from potentially sounding a bit sterile. It's a perfect combination.

Fagan has said more than once that since this song is from the point of view of a very young and naive boy that he intentionally excluded any since of sarcasm and irony from the lyric. His sense of optimism and wonder is a product of that naivete. Looking back as an adult however this song then becomes bittersweet and saddening to see what we have made of the world since that brief moment of union, multi-nationalism, and harmony toward a shared goal. This is a great album that should be heard in it's entirety.

You're thinking of the melodica, which he does play in concert for this song and others, however what you're hearing here, and some other songs such as Peg, is called a Lyricon and it's played by Tom Scott. It's essentially a wind controller with saxophone keying, controlling a synthesizer unit. Look it up.

Final Frontier should be your next from Fagen. It is the song just before I.G.Y. on the same album. Every song is good on the album, but Final Frontier is one of Fagen's best, solo or Steely Dan, period.

Fagan"s Morph The Cat is also an excellent album. My fav from that is Mary Shut The Garden Door. Very jazzy.
