This is, for me, one of the top 5 albums ever recorded - like EVER! Ian Paice never gets enough credit for his mind-boggling skills. You should hear his intro to the song Fireball. And, of course, his unrelenting speed drumming throughout Burn.

It's hard to put into words, but to me Machine Head is one of those albums that feels like it has always existed and was simply "discovered" by the band. I get that same vibe from Led Zeppelin IV, Dark Side of the Moon, Court of the Crimson King, Innervisions, Aqualung and Abbey Road (there are probably more but I can't think of them off the top of my head). Machine Head and those other albums seem to be the PERFECT expressions of a particular sound, time and place. These are not even necessarily my favourite albums by the respective bands, but I have to acknowledge they are the CLASSIC masterpieces produced by those artists. As I said, hard to put into words.

@@frankpentangeli7945 very interesting view, Frank. And you did explain it well considering that’s a notion that’s hard to pin down in words. There is a perfection in an album like Machine Head and the others you mentioned have this quality from beginning to end that’s really the essence of the band in question.

Chod ! "This doesn't sound like Purple" near the beginning. Let's see Paice's drumming, Gillan's vocals and nobody on earth sounds like Ritchie on guitar. Maybe a bit lighter on organ at the start than usual, but this whole song screams DP.

I love this song for many reasons, not the least of which is that EVERY instrument has a solo. In order: drums, guitar, organ, bass. And by the way, you didn't let the song play through to the end for some reason. What's up with that?!? In any event, Deep Purple is indeed like a box of chocolates. When you think you have them figured out they come up with something like "And the Address", "Listen, Learn, Read On", "Wring That Neck", "Chasing Shadows", "The Painter", "Bloodsucker", "Flight of the Rat", "Hard Lovin' Man", "No No No", "The Mule", "Fools", "No One Came", "Maybe I'm a Leo", "Lazy", "Space Truckin'", "Mary Long", "Rat Bat Blue", "Place In Line", "Might Just Take Your Life", "Mistreated", "A-200", "Holy Man", "Hold On" or "Soldier of Fortune". They were improvisers, experimenters and MASTERS of misdirection.

They recorded this album in a hallway of an abandoned Hotel using mattresses to keep the sound conditions ideal,it was in the middle of winter the Hotel was situated on the edge of an iced up lake, the sound engineer was sitting in a truck out the front they had to walk up and down stairs to get to him with each recorded song to get it mixed, some songs the sound man rejected and they had to go back and record them again and do the freezing trek back to the sound man, after all this they produced one of the best Rock Albums ever!!!! 50 years from now it will still be highly rated,a Masterpiece 👍👍👍

"Pictures of home" another winner of the iconic Machine Head LP. You really need to play the whole album as we did way back in the 70's a total masterpiece. As a high school kid I remember saving up to buy my first ever album. Guess what it was Machine Head. Still have it. This song is about a lost mountaineer which makes sense given where they recorded the album. And yes it sounds like classic DP to me.

It’s a shame that the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and the vocalist Ian Gillian couldn’t get along with each other. No telling how far they could’ve gone. All that said Machine Head was one of the best albums to come out of the early 70’s. Everyone in Deep Purple were world class musicians. Jon Lords keyboard playing with give you the chills.

One good reason Gillan couldn't do Child In Time night after night and he told Ritchie not to introduce it in all their gigs but Ritchie did it any way. No ones voice could take that extreme forever. Gillans voice to an even bigger beating when he sang with Black Sabbath. I'm glad that Ian is still singing even though he can't scream like before

You already reacted to this, How could you not remember that awesome drum intro? Another great DP song with a great drum intro is Fireball. great double bass work. The only time Paice used double bass was for fireball. He had an idea how he wanted to play the song..he could get up to speed with one kick drum but it lacked power. So they went into the studio next door and borrowed one of Keith moon's bass drums. Recorded the song and put it back without kith ever knowing

It is their dark album which is their heavy metal interpretation. Other dark albums are: 1) In A Glass House By Gentle Giant 2) Crime of the Century By Supertramp 3) Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd 4) Red By King Crimson 5) ELO 2 by Electric Light Orchestra. and so on . . .. These are different from actual heavy metal bands, but abstracts of the genre done once after which they returned to the style they did normally. The tonal color of the album covers of all these heavy metal interpretations are dark or black. In the case of ELO 2, they came out with two different album covers with both depicting a black light in them.

Loved this album when it came out - but, for me, it got quickly overshadowed by the unedited "Made In Japan" which took the main tracks to a whole different level - as with anything they did live. Been listening to Purple etc since 1971 after hearing the Fireball album and it was Jon Lord and the sound of his Hammond which sucked me in first! So I'd suggest to listen to the two songs that got me and they were "Demons Eye" and "No, No, No" - as a drummer there's also "The Mule" and "Fireball" too!

Agreed ... Deep Purple was first and foremost a LIVE band. Clearly they had great studio albums too, but more importantly they could blow anyone else off the stage. The sheer explosive power of their live performances was unequalled, especially with Gillan on vocals. Zeppelin and Sabbath wrote great songs, but they were NEVER better live than in studio. Deep Purple was ALWAYS better live than in studio because of their astounding musicianship and because they loved to improvise. No other rock band could touch them in concert.
