hi, Chod! I have seen your reactions for some Deep Purple classic numbers like Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin', Lazy, Speed King, Child in Time, Wring That Neck, Kentucky Woman, Woman from Tokyo, Hush, Perfect Strangers, Burn etc, so when I found this one I really appreciated, because this is a very rare opportunity to listen Ritchie playing bass. I'd like to see your reactions for some Deep Purple different material, things like Concerto for Group and Orchestra 1st Movement; Hallellujah; Listen Learn Read On; Hard Lovin' Man; No One Came; Fools; The Mule; Smooth Dancer etc. greetings from Brazil!

Hey brother .. I have been a DP fan since I was a child ... 50 years .. still I believe the greatest group of musicians ever . I also have been a musician 50 years .. my suggestion to you with Deep Purple is since their catalog is enormous and so many groups came from Deep Purple .. do the Live versions from Made in Japan .. still at the top of every list of greatest live albums of all time. Yes they loved to jam and never played a song twice the same way. I see you had done Lazy .. you really should hear the Made in Japan version .. and Highway Star .. Had a white Jaguar XJS in the nineties plate said Highway * (star} named after the song.. even Smoke On the Water from Made In Japan is epic .. those live jams are what set them apart from everyone else and earned them the reputation of being included in the group of top musicians on the planet. That album this Jam was taken from has some incredible songs .. Smooth Dancer .. Super Trooper .. Rat Bat Blue .. yet is probably their least known album. Jon was incredible and the amazing thing about Lord and Blackmore was their ability blend and even emulate each others riffs.. it is very difficult to do Jon Lord riffs on a guitar and Blackmore riffs on an organ ..yet they could always play them perfectly together... Paicey on the drums .. incredible his solo in the song The Mule from Made In Japan was copied and the standard of greatness for every drummer who followed. You father being a Keyboardist easy to see how this hits close to home for you I get it .. it's been close to me my whole life .. still valid and still a blessing today. Tc

I wonder what Buddy Rich thought of these guys; more relevant, what he thought of the concert which preceded it all with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra...that was before In Rock... This is R and B to the core...the song "Lazy" is what they re best known for, but this is just as the title says, "jam"

I forgot this existed. They released this when they re-issued this album 25 or 30 years later with bonus tracks. It’s definitely literally a jam, the band reuniting after a break and simply pressing the record button. I really enjoyed it. I liked the jazz and blues aspects and that they gave Jon the lead. They tend to be more guitar driven. Seems like (guitarist) Ritchie hadn’t even arrived yet. Thanks for playing it, I haven’t heard this in ages!
@somebloke13
@somebloke13 3 жыл бұрын
Other way round apparently. The guitarist is playing bass as the bass player hadn't arrived. If you listen there's no guitar
@mickeyhank
@mickeyhank 3 жыл бұрын
@@somebloke13 I learned that (that Blackmore played bass) reading the other comments here. There’s no way to know that without having read about it in advance...I mean It’s not like we know Ritchie Blackmore’s bass playing sound or style. And yes, no guitar - that’s why I surmised Blackmore hadn’t arrived yet... BECAUSE there’s no guitar.

Great suggestion. Maybe an even bigger contrast, though during a different era of the band, would be “This Time Around/Owed to G”, or “Holy Man”, but yes from the Gillan era “Hallelujah” is a great call. (And, Chod, it’s not the Leonard Cohen composition that everyone has become very familiar with)

Strange choice of a bonus track which was not originally on the album, especially if you have on this album a tune like Rat Bat blue and a fantastic Jon Lord solo on It...
@mickeyhank
@mickeyhank 3 жыл бұрын
That was my initial reaction when I saw the title but he explained how this happened. Someone or several people suggested this as a great way to hear Jon Lord, and that’s true, Jon has the lead for over 11 minutes. We have the advantage of already knowing all these songs, what you could call hindsight. And this was cool as well, showed a different side of the band, loose jazz, blues jamming. It’s all good.
@robsco1249
@robsco1249 3 жыл бұрын
@@mickeyhank True but we are here to suggest and there are a lot of Better things from Lord and the band ...wring that neck and mandrake root 1969-71 were great mostly instrumental tunes with big parts of hammond...and about Jon solos I prefer a lot more living wreck, High ball shooter, malice in Wonderland than this bonus track.
@mickeyhank
@mickeyhank 3 жыл бұрын
@@robsco1249 yes, I know all those songs, and they all have great organ in them. I guess all I would say is that WE know these songs, already, while to him they are ALL unknown so if he gets, let’s say 30 people suggesting 35 different deep purple songs how does he to know what to pick? He can only go one by one and pick something that sounds intriguing to him. And then there’s every other band where the same thing is happening. And even if he eventually listens to all the songs we have named, our favorites, he, because taste is subjective and personal , might end up preferring this bonus track jam. What happens on reaction channels is you get this clusterf*# of everyone voicing their favorite songs and then the reacter has to deal with that. All he sees is titles so he simply cannot be blamed for not picking our recommendations quickly. We are one voice in a wilderness of hundreds, if not thousands.. If we get upset, that’s our impatience and disappointment, not something “wrong“ that the reacter has done. We just have to be patient if we want to hear songs that we personally recommend. But yeah, I agree with you that suggestions should be given and Chod here wants us to do that.
@robsco1249
@robsco1249 3 жыл бұрын
@@mickeyhank if several people suggested this bonus track, that mean they know Purple well enough...and that's really strange...Jon Lord Is not famous because of this little improvised jam.
@mickeyhank
@mickeyhank 3 жыл бұрын
@@robsco1249 That’s very true but maybe those people (I wasn’t one of them, I had completely forgotten about this) were trying to give him basically all organ and I can’t think of another deep purple song where Jon has the lead for 11 minutes, so I’m sure they thought they were doing him a favor in recommending this. I was glad to hear it again. And he liked it, so it was a success. We move on, he’ll do other Purple songs in the future.... perhaps the ones you’ve suggested, eventually.
