Never give up, half the fun is learning and enjoy every moment in the wild! A maroon color scotch brite pad will clean that bit of surface rust on your knife then wipe a bit of oil on it. I cant remember how many fishing rods I costomized by shortening the tips😅. You can buy a rod tip repair kit for a few bucks. It has a few sizes of rod tips and a stick of hot glue you melt with a lighter. Northwoods has them by the stringers and stuff. For paddle trolling you can't beat a rapala in black and silver. Add a wire leader so a big pike doesn't take it home with him and hang on😅. Thanks for sharing your great adventures!

You take on challenges as you are learning better than most guys I know that have decades of experience! 😅 A few years ago I started using those rubberized twist ties called Gear Ties to keep fishing rods protected and tangle proof. Take the rod down in half side by side and have the tip alongside the other rod sections handle end so it's not past its end, then wrap the ties tight a few times around both ends of the rod sections. These work way better than the things made for fishing rods. I could have saved so much money over the years...😅

Hats off to you for hauling it around like you did, it looked cumbersome but you made it look easy. For what its worth, have you ever tried a gravity style water filter like the one Lifestraw makes? You fill up the bag with lake, pond or stream water, then attach a water bladder or bottle to the hose that has the filter in line and let gravity do the rest, great when you are at camp and you don't want to lose any time filtering water. Michigan was blessed with some spectacular weather this past Labor Day weekend. Sunny, not too hot, not too cold. Nice to see that weather extended all the up in to the U.P. for your wilderness canoe camping trip. By mid-August, more often than not, warm air has penetrated way up into Canada, ending the "clash of the air masses" that brings lots of cold fronts and stormy weather into Michigan. It helps that the Great Lakes have warmed up a bit, too, making the local "lake effect" type of weather less of a problem. When our kids were young, we camped a lot on Labor Day weekends (not wilderness, but in a VW Westphalia camper van), usually going across the Blue Water Bridge into Ontario along the shores of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The latter is quite rugged and scenic, but other than the big lake, I'm not sure if there are any water you could travel on by canoe. At least it's not a nine hour drive to get there. You might want to do some research as to canoeing in southwestern Ontario.
@Apeaceofthewoods2 ай бұрын
The weather was perfect! Minus the wind on a few of the days. It was quite a bit cooler up there than what it was in SE Michigan that weekend. There are so many amazing places in Ontario that would be closer than the Western part of the UP. I was using this trip to prepare me for some of them and to make sure I could handle the portages! I’ll also have to consider the fact that my current canoe can’t handle wind on big water like Lake Huron (although I would absolutely love to go for the beautiful scenery) I’m sure there’s an outfitter I could find
@Yesquire02 ай бұрын
@@Apeaceofthewoods One thought I had after posting was I wonder what canoe routes might exist in and around the delta of the St. Clair river (Harsen's Island, etc.)? It would be very different scenery, marshland rather than forests, but that might be a nice change of pace, plus it would be a much shorter drive and doable as a short weekend journey.
@Yesquire02 ай бұрын
@@Apeaceofthewoods Nowadays, the problem is typically too many choices and wondering if you are making the right one. I had some guy friends who did a canoe camping trip up In Algonquin Park. I recall this mainly because they went in late Spring and woke up one morning to 4" of snow. It's a long drive to get there, but I'm advised it is was a great trip despite the snow surprise. My camping was not comparable to what you are doing, but the Bruce Pennisula was spectacular. It's an exentension of the Niagara Escarpment, the same geologic feature that gives us Niagara Falls. My familiy walked a trail at Brunce Pennisula that took us up the backside of a steep cliff. My son was maybe 3 years old. He was walking along with me and loved the steep trail that required him to use all of his hands and feet to ascend. We get to the top, and see the clear bluegreen waters of Georgian Bay as far as the eye can see. Looking down about 120' (and it was truly a vertical cliff) and a school of about 30 large lake trout or king salmon were lazily swimming by at the foot of the cliff. The trail became a narrow ledge along that vertical cliff. At one point we had to jump (not too far) over a gap in the ledge to keep going. Mom just about had a heart attack watching from behind us. There was a cove there, out in the early September sunshine, where lots of local kids were sitting or laying on a broad, large rock and daring each other jump into Georgian Bay about 30 ft. below. We came down some switchbanks to lake level, waded through some ankle-deep water, and joined them for a while. We had to. The wading had caused our feet to go completely numb. That was some cold water. Maybe a sea kayak might be in order eventually.

I loved Sylvania Wilderness when I went with my former gf a few years back. We had a great time. I remember especially the sundews and pitcher plants on the floating logs near the Wisconsin line. And the sign to Crooked Lake that was itself wildly crooked. I like that you use a bow tiedown when cartop carrying your canoe; some fools do not. I assume you use a stern tiedown as well. I use just one rope tied at one location in the front and one rope tied in one location in the rear. Using two tiedown locations would give you more side-to-side security but not the way you have it. Try using a lark's head knot (super easy) to secure your tie down rope to the loop at the canoe. That way, should the roof straps fail, the line won't feed through the loop and the boat should remain secure - as long as you use both bow and stern lines of course. Btw, I was at Isle Royale the same weekend and we had to contend with winds there too. Paddle on!
@Apeaceofthewoods2 ай бұрын
I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be as beautiful as it is. I don’t think anyone can fully understand unless you’ve physically been there. I’ve never in my life seen lakes with water that clear. Im happy you and your former GF had the opportunity to experience it as well. Yes I use a stern tie-down as well. So you’re saying I should add a knot (Lark’s head) to attach the rope to the loop on the canoe as well. Will do if that makes it more secure! I can’t wait to make it to Isle Royale…did you hike or canoe? That trip will require a pretty big deduction of my PTO days at work with the drive up and ferry ride over so I’m figuring out when to work it in ☺️

Our ride on the Queen was pushed back a day due to bad seas but we lucked out and were able to take the Ranger III out of Houghton. NPS staff was fantastic! The rest of the trip played havoc with our plans also. We knew we'd have a 2.3 mile portage coming out but the water taxi was not going around to Birch Island as planned due to high winds so we arranged to get dropped off at Moskey and did the 2.3 mile portage in to Lake Richie AND back out 2-1/2 days later. It was not optimal but we made the best of it. And I had your luck fishing; my buddies fared a little better. We failed to see moose, wolves or the northern lights but the stars were amazing and there is something deeply spiritual about the island. In spite of the disappointments, I'm glad I was able to visit. If you're able to attend a presentation by the moose study couple across the bay from Daisy Farm or schedule a visit to their facility, do it!

What another beautiful trip this was...just love the lakes and surrounding forest. Your food looks really delish. The frogs you encountered aren't 🐸 frogs, they are toads 😊. The birch bark should be lit while you're holding it, then lay it down and gently lay the little sticks on it 😊. Be safe out there.
@Apeaceofthewoods2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for continuing to watch ☺️ haha I wasn’t sure so I figured it was safe to call them frogs bc I think toads are a type of frog if I’m not mistaken. Ahh thank you, that helps. You hit another classic Michigan get-a-way! It's cool you had an extended period of time to spend there over the holiday weekend. In addition to the link you provided, there is also a small book that I've read called, "Sylvania-Where Man Is A Visitor" by Marv & Norma Jean Lauritsen. Although older (2006), it explains the area's history & a blurb about each lake (including what species of fish are in each one). I'm still collecting gear & planning a trip to the UP in a few weeks. Until then, thanks for sharing your experiences!
@Apeaceofthewoods2 ай бұрын
Thank you!! I would have loved to have heard of that book before this trip. Might have helped me catch a fish out there! But looks like an interesting read anyway. Hope you have fun on your trip in a few weeks…I’m sure you will ☺️

I've been trying to be patient, waiting for you to post your next video😂 Another great one! The food looked great as always. Bummer on the broken rod and no fish! Day one, I was thinking "is there ever a day the wind doesn't blow like crazy up there?", then you had some calm water. Super impressed with your videos, drive and great attitude when things don't go as planned. Was glad to see you had a lighter! Save the other method for emergency. Keep up the great work!

I don’t know if that’s normal lol. Haha definitely have a lighter and would not depend on my farro rod skills 😂 it’s fun to try though…and something that would be nice to know I COULD do. Thank you again! Appreciate you watching the videos!

Chartreuse 3 inch twister tails with 1/8 or 1/4 ounce jig heads are always a great fishing lure combo. Chartreuse is one of my fav lures colors. I have caught everything from Walleye to Steelhead on it…Great video as always! I would keep my fishing rod in a hard plastic container…but I have broken at least 8 rods on fish, car doors, trunks and lost the top half of a fly rod walking along a trout stream so no big deal. Gives you a reason to buy a new fishing rod!
@Apeaceofthewoods2 ай бұрын
Adding 3” chartreuse twister tales to my Amazon cart now! lol. We will see how it works for me next time around. Haha ok, I feel better that I’m not the only one breaking things because I’ve gone through so many rods/reels at this point. I haven’t found a telescopic that seems to be any better than the one I had so I might re purchase it and then I was recommended an ugly stick straight rod. Definitely need a cover for sure. With all of the advice I’m getting I should be able to get this figured out!

I discovered your channel this morning and immediately became interested in your Michigan adventures. Until recently, my folks had a lake house on Lake Gogebic. I spent as much time as possible in the Ottawa National Forest camping, kayaking and hiking when visiting. Also extended back country camping at the Porkies. I do a lot of solo adventuring as many of my friends just are not into that. The 1 thing I always wanted to do but never did was the trip to Sylvania Wildness area. I am a bit concerned about portaging. I'm 60, although in good shape and would probably do this solo as well. From what I've seen from your videos, I think it is doable. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your adventures with everybody. You are a delightful person and have inspired me to take that trip I've always wanted to take. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures.

Thanks for another absolutely wonderful video of your adventures 🤩 As so many others mentioned in the comments. Your adventures are so full of enthusiasm and inspire so much and above all they are down-to-earth, which makes me (and I think many others here too) recognize yourself in the micro-adventures you do when you are free from work . (Although I have never set out on an adventure as long as 5 days, which you do in this video) What a beautiful nature you are paddling in and 13:47 into the video you are paddling towards a beach and that sequence/image is absolutely amazing which made me think of another thing :-) The tip for the series "From" I started watching it after you mentioned it in a previous video you posted and I was completely hooked on that series - Thank you so much. Take care of yourself and your loved ones and I, along with many others, look forward to your next hiking/paddling adventure.
