I got my RAF marksman certification at that firing range in 1979. I was with the Air training corps, 1082 squadron from Brimington , Chesterfield. I can still remember sitting on those benches in the target bay. We had to take turns in the target bay and paste over the holes with white squares of paper after each one was used. Then we hauled them back up above our heads again on a pulley so they could be shot at again. It was a real thrill listening and watching the bullets fly over our heads and into the target. I remember the sand enbankment clearly behind the targets. I live in Canada now but I remember it very well. We had an all day map and compass excercise on top of the moor above the range. I can still remember walking by the Totley tunnel vents on top of the Moor. It was pouring down rain up there and glad I had my rain gear. Thankyou so much for doing this video. It has brought back many memories.
@patrickdickinson64928 ай бұрын
This is really great to hear, that you where actually there and how you operated the targets, to hear the bullet zipping just feet over your head and thudding into the embankment, just amazing. Alot of the barriers are still there but all the target mechanism has gone, and the whole site is slowly returning to nature, thank you for sharing your experiences........Pat

Brilliant to read this. It keeps the the place alive hearing off someone that actually operated there. Both yours and Pats accounts are really fascinating. Thank you.

I had the exact same experience only in the mid 90’s as an Army Cadet from Sheffield. The sound of those ricochet’s of the bullets passing over your head. In fact I must have been one of the last people to use the range. I remember when it closed in 1997. We still continued to camp up there after they closed the range for other exercises.

Good to see you back Patrick. I really enjoyed your little informative video on Totley firing range. My uncle considered himself to be a bit of a crack shot. Hope to see you in the Itchy pig again one day 🍻

Pat, can you share some more about your career as an electrician? You must have some stories from over the years! Maybe share some over a few pints in the shed? All the best! - Sam

Hi Sam yes I would have some interesting stories, I was a Electrical Power Engineer for 40 years work on voltages up to 132, 000 volts, it was a interesting job and great camaraderie with people I worked with, will have to see when next in the pub..... thanks Pat

Good evening Pat, we have been subscribed to your channel for a few months now and thought it was about time we left you a comment. The first vid we watched of yours was your Old age pensioner wild camping on the edge of Kinder Scout, we are not wild campers or even campers, but have been inspired to maybe give it a go. We love the Peak District and have visited many times over the years we watched your videos to help our knowledge of the area and the lay of the land to help us with our own adventures when we visit. Your videos are just great and we often laugh out loud, you are the wild camping king 🤴 of You Tube! Our last trip to the area was in early April, we managed to find your famous spot and add an entry, after watching your videos and a few others I thought I had located it using an OS map and google maps and was thrilled when we found it. What an amazing spot! Thank you so much for all your videos we have thoroughly enjoyed them. It was also through you that we found Solo Sarah B she's great, and has the same enthusiasm for that place as I do. Look forward to watching your future wild camps 🏕 Sadie and Paul.

Hello to both of you and so nice to hear from you, remember my OAP video, I think part of that was to prove I could still climb up Kinder Scout and wild camping, must admit doesn't bear thinking about the day I cannot get up there. I think Sarah will do great with her channel she has a lovely of the great outdoors which shows on her videos...... all the best Pat
