I nearly threw this footage on the scrap heap but I've decided to post the video, this was from the summer heatwave , a solo hike and wild camp in the Peak District.
Things didn't go as planned on this one , I had a choice of locations in mind , Bamford edge , Mam tor , would have been perfect weather and a nice sunset.
I chose this location but when I got to my planned camp spot there were a group of young lads camping there , so i had to camp in a forest nearby before it went dark , it was full of midges , I got eaten alive and had to go into the tent early to escape them , i was disappointed in myself for not choosing another spot, bamford edge or mam tor. I ended up stuck in a small tent in hot humid conditions to escape clouds of midges.
I spotted a tick in my Tent crawling on the inner tent, I managed to kill it , but after having encephalitis brain infection last year from a possible tick bite or gnat bite and being in hospital for 3 weeks, it was a nightmare for me.
The hike up to the Quarry through padley Gorge, past mother Cap was a cracking walk with stunning views and Rock formations though.
I cooked fried duck and noodles but didn't get much footage because of the midges , I had to keep walking to try and avoid them.
The morning was stunning apart from the tick in the tent , misty forest and a walk through padley Gorge to cook breakfast, one of the best mornings but one of the worst nights I've had wild camping so far.
Definitely looking forward to some winter camps with less midges and ticks about.
Thanks for watching!

Done that a few times, filmed a hike, looked at it then binned it, having said that, a couple of them I 'almost' binned turned out to get a lot of views🤔. Funny how sometimes despite good planning a camp/hike can go pear shaped and awful when that happens. Good to see you out in the Helm 1 again but a mare with the bugs and ticks are my worst nightmare. We used to eat spam all the time when we were kids, as it was so cheap, today it is almost a luxery item! Cheers Alan

Fantastic views from the high ground there. You found some excellent spots. Thank you for NOT chucking the footage in the bin - the clips have made an excellent video. The trees in the sunset at 6:15 looked so pretty. And the magical misty view at 11:00. Dammed shame about the midges. They are HORID, I hate them. Great breakfast. Thank you for sharing :)

Always good to see you camping in my home county, Gaz. Still looked a good spot that did tbf in that birch woodland.. I was up on Derwent Edge the other week, the midges pounced on me as soon as I got out the tent, really didn’t expect that first thing in the morning! I use the Lifesystems EX4 to spray on my trousers/socks/shoes, does a really good job of keeping those nasty ticks at away - highly recommend it! 👍🏻 It contains Permethrin, and is even safe to spray on your tent if you so wanted… Unlike that horrible sticky Deet that will literally melt your tent.

Nice one mate , thanks for the info too I appreciate it, it was just so humid and Warm stuck in the small tent , the midges were in my eyes and everything, think I was just so disappointed there were people in my intended location and I hadn't chose somewhere else , I had to pitch fast because didn't have much time to find anywhere else , ticks are my worst nightmare now since being ill last year from a possible time bite , nice one mate , all the best 👍 🏕

👍 #59 Hi Gaz,OMG the dreaded Midges. I really sympathise with you on this trip. If I could wipe out one species of living things in this world, I think Midges would just pip House Flies. I often get mobbed by both. Midges are an absolute day killer if they are 'on to you'. I like woodlands and streams and rivers etc, all those places get zillions of Midges, and the biters are out in force from the beginning of June. For some weird reason, Bluebottles mob my camera on the tripod and then mob my head! So I detest them too. And the young lads already at your spot was a bummer too. It happens to photographers too and often you wait forever to capture something and something happens with a person turning up, maybe a loose Dopg or noisy folks scare away the bird etc. Blimey, I have had a few Tick passengers on me too. Horrid beasties and the tiny ones are so hard to remove. ..... Those rock formations are amazing! A great walk across that cliff top, bisecting a young forest. I had a laugh at the Spam and beans... i used to have that often in my first ever flat, lol. Grilled Spam was half decent to be fair. Interesting video Gaz thank you. 👍◕‿◕

I can imagine the frustration for you as a photographer if something disturbs the wildlife , I know it requires a lot of stealth and patience, it was disappointing that the lads had taken my pitch , but the midges were horrible, I ended up sitting in my small tent for hours , ticks are my worst nightmare, hope you have a nice weekend, all the best 👍

You do seem to have bad luck with the biting insects, they are a real pain. I reckon you picked two of the worst possible places to camp though, bamford and mam tor, far too busy, wouldn't go anywhere near them to camp or walk, far to accessable to poeple especially in the summer. Good luck on your next camp and hope its a lot better.

It's too bad that you had all the midges! Could you have lit a fire there or is that not allowed. I've found the smoke can get a lot of them to leave. For the ticks, do the ticks there carry lime disease? That is one that I would not like to get. I thought it looked like a beautiful place, but I guess I'm glad I just watched it through video rather than being there😁
