Wild horses die in Nevada roundup

11 wild horses have died in a mustang roundup in Nevada. Activists are decrying the roundup while one state senator says the federal government needs to address the horse population issue. KRNV’s Ben Margiott reports.

​@@NonprofitWrenchWild horses are good for the land. They make the grass grow more abundantly and stronger. They help the soil etc. It is not legal to make them a food source in the USA. And there have been adoptions and reversible birth control. It has been proven that wild horses are far better for the land than cattle. If the populations are properly managed the land can serve both. As far as families that need food there are plenty of agencies for that.

Sickening laziness. Agree with roundups. But why not do small roundups throughout the year? All they'd need to do is build some trap corrals, then bait them with hay, especially in the winter. And use cowboys on horses, not helicopters. Probably be a lot cheaper. Trying to round up thousands of horses during heat of summer is crazy and cruel.

It's a reckless process by a heartless federal agency. They blame the wild horses for the deteriorated land, but it's really the cattlemen's animals which are placed on the land to graze for almost nothing that are competing and harming the land. The private livestock populations are so high, and they do much greater damage. No one is mentioning that anywhere in this short segment. The horses have no economic value and therefore are treated inhumanely. These horses are supposed to be protected on these lands per law. Once again, it's all about money and who has power. Shame on you Biden Administration/Bureau of Land Management, not to mention our Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, who directly oversees this horrible process. Why do they choose the hottest time of year, when the heat is sweltering, to run down these horses and increase the fatalities? I can tell you one thing, I'm not voting for Biden again, not that the Republicans are any better. I'm looking for better alternatives, not hypocrites.

It is the livestock grazing of mainly cattle and sheep who destroy the land, wallow in any water. Horses & other equine are a native species, they could heal the lands, spread grass seeds, naturally reopen mucked over springs. This goes for many states, there would be many less wildfires if the lands went back 100 years when lands were pristine because of wild horses & other native wildlife.

exactly it's called rewilding but they just want cattle, the law was passed in 1971 to totally protect the wild horses so future generations can see these beautiful animals running free and represent freedom in our country, instead cattle! People run more cattle on BLM land, than horses. Like so many things, people react based on opinions. I don't have facts on Nevada, but know that in other areas where hearts are monitored each year, they've broken the myths that horses have no natural predators AND that the population is out of control. Wild horse population has actually decreased year over year in some areas. Oh, and horses have been killed by vehicles on a regular basis in Sand Wash Basin. And that isn't due to horses encroaching on cities. It's because people are careless when driving in wild country.

This roundup isn't near a big city. I'm near Carson, Dayton, and Reno. Horses do get hit. Horses die, cars are you totaled, and I'm sure people get hurt and die... 🤷🏼. I also see people speed where they shouldn't be speeding. Can't say I feel sorry for them if they hit something. Freaks me out to see horses near a road. Didn't grow up seeing that. People need to slow the f down.

That is not what this is about. It is about profit and ranchers. The land can support far more than there are. And wild horses improve the health and growth of grass and plants and soil. That is no way to manage populations. It is irresponsible and unlawful. These horses are part of our heritage. You are entitled to your views. Please educate yourself though. These round ups could never have been held so often without helicopters. I'm betting in the days of cowboys on horseback, these horses weren't injured as often. Foals weren't left to starve alone. Mustangs are American icons, a symbol of American freedom around the world and look what our government does against our will. Ranchers pay very little for the leases to graze their cattle here. It's still money, though, and that's why BLM targets horses. Don't tell us those cattle don't tear up the land.

Birth control slipped into sweet feed? I LOVE horses; I wouldn't mind if they dropped the same treats in some areas I've lived in. But for people. If there are way too many deer or rabbits, they'll have to be culled to fit the area they are in, or their own health and safety will be at risk. Like people being crowded into cities, which is a bad idea for the very same reason. Until we come up with a better idea, and I KNOW we can...the herd must be thinned. Sick, injured, elderly...It's life on the farm. I dearly hope many can be rehomed.
