once I got lost in the rio grande natl forest as a kid while camping with my family... i wandered around for hours and was panicking the whole time, watching the sun start to set. at some point a tiny grey field mouse scurried up to me, i've always been an animal lover so i picked him up and held him in my hand, he wasn't scared at all, didn't try to escape, was very tame just like this little guy. it really lifted my spirits and gave me the energy to keep going :-)

One comment mentions it might be a vole, and this is true. We always called voles "field mice" in the Midwest. They have larger eyes, bigger heads, more "Disney" looking. They seem more docile than regular mice. Regular mice seem more nervous in the wild. I would recommend turning the mouse loose outside where he can get back to his mouse/vole routine. They probably wouldn't choose to be held captive. Everyone wants to be free. I usually turn them loose where this is dependable water, and give them something to eat nearby when you release them so they don't have to hunt right away. Anywhere there is plant seed, grass seed, the mice will have plenty of food.

I personally recommend leaving the mouse/vole friend you have in a wildlife rescue center or keep them as pet, mammals that get too tame with humans cannot go back to the wild sadly, simply cuz they get too attached and dependent. I know there is a chance of you managing to rehab this little mikey into an actual wild animal but it is a small chance and the high probability is that it will die on the wild. Wish you the best of luck tho, this baby is so precious!

OMG!! I just found one... It was on a walking cement path leaning against the curb. It was so weak... It was cold and windy... he's a bit smaller than your mouse. Probably 8 weeks old or so... very weak and shaky, wobbly... I put my hand down and he crawled right in. Probably for warmth... after 10 minutes set him down but he crawled towards me so I set my hand down and he crawled back in and went to sleep. I figure he's dehydrated and exhausted. So took him home to care for him to get his strength back up.,.. gave him cap full of water with a tiny bit of salt and another cap with tiny bit of sugar... he drank from the sugar one then later the salt one... also gave him a block of mouse food from the pet store which he already is nibbling on. And a tiny tiny bit of fresh apple which he ate from. I think he's going to be okay... He loves to crawl into my hand and sleep...

I had something like this happen. I'd caught some mice in my house with a live-catch trap. I kept them in a cage. I was hoping to catch several of them, and then take the cage outside and release a lot of them way out in a field outside town. Well.. lots of things happened in between. I couldn't even keep the mice in the cage, they found very interesting ways to get out! Anyway, I started releasing them one at a time. Well, the youngest I got, that mouse would 'purr' as young ones do around me. I figured it meant something special. I was in for a bit of heartbreak when I found out what! That one mouse, when I went to let him or her ( I never got to see the gender on that one ) go, they climbed up my hand from out of the trap, up my arm, across my shoulders ( I was kneeling on my knees at the time ), and then down my back. It stopped right next to my tail-bone, and just sat there. I could even feel it curl up. I had to actually - encourage - it to climb down and run off into the grass. I know the poor li'l dear had to be free, but that moment was so terribly heart-wrenching that I felt terrible the whole rest of that day. It still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

The sad part here is that deermouse is actually quite young,and is probably the reason as to why it is so tame aswell. In other words this young mouse most likely died shortly after release due to starvation/exposure/predators.
@colonelradec59563 жыл бұрын
i wouldnt be so sure. they are absolute dummies at that age thats for sure. like a month maybe. but if they survive they grow up fast. the mom lets them run off at that size and he was pudgy so well fed. if he lived another week or so hed be fine.

Remember, guys: voles may be cute, but like mice and moles, they can also be destructive. Voles love to burrow and eat bulb plants, so if you're the type of person who cares about the well-being of your garden, you definitely don't want them around your house. If you find one, I would recommend taking it as far away from your garden as possible, so they aren't tempted to come back and eat your plants.

Live release doesn't work. They'll just come right back. They have been recorded finding their way back from at least 20 miles, and will probably travel even further to get back to a reliable source of food, heat, and safety.
