On the corner that you did most of your passing (and got passed a bit on too), all the passing seemed to occur on the inside line, are you not allowed to move over into that line and do a little blocking and push them to the outside to pass? Hey Chad, thanks for the comment! Check out www.specracer.com for lots of info. You can rent a car (multiple shops around the country have rentals), own and "arrive and drive", or own and maintain/tow your own car to the track. I do the latter.

Nice bit of driving. I raced back in the 80's at Road American with go karts, we turned lap times of 2 min 51 sec. I curious what kind of lap times did you guys turn and did the Times improve once you reached the lead pack? Also were can I go to research the class of racing. Thanks for posting the video.

Hey John, thanks for the comments. Pole for our class at Road America is usually in the high 2:30's, track record is a 2.37 and change I believe. A draft is critical but a pack of cars runs slower than a pair tightly coupled due to the long braking zones at RA. www.specracer.com has a ton of info on the class, I post there as Racer X. We have a new engine package coming out in 2015 that may well be 4-6 seconds per lap quicker at Road America.

Can you mirror the rear view camera in the video editor? It's very confusing to not see a mirror image from behind. Should be quite easy to do in post production. Usually just a menu option for that videos timeline.

Why would he mirror it? Then it would look like he was turning right when actually turning left and vice versa, that would be really confusing.

Because then it would actually emulate a rear view mirror. At the moment it's confusing to see a car coming up on his left from the rear view, and then appear on his right when it overtakes. In driving, you'd see the car approach in the mirror on the right and then overtake on the right. Everything makes more sense that way and is far more natural for anyone who actually knows how to drive.

are the spec racers as fun irl to drive as they are on iracing? On there they have a small window with lift throttle oversteer but when u find it, they can be really rewarding. btw, seen a cpl of your vids, seems like you have a fairly smooth style given the wheel to wheel nature of these races.

+Leeskie Ferrell Hey Leeskie, thanks for the comments. Yes, they are more fun irl than in simulation I can promise you. Just the sensory perception of yaw, pitch, etc. makes all the difference. Add in your other senses and the adrenaline of a close race and it's arguably the most fun you can have, period. ;) (this is a family channel). Regarding trailing throttle oversteer, they react that way irl as well but tires and set up make a huge difference. We've changed from bias ply Goodyears to radial Hoosiers this year so the edge is sharper and you lose more time when you slide the car. As such, the racing will be at least as good but the videos might not show as much wheel input. We'll see...Thanks for watching and posting!

How (in general) is best to deal with this oversteer under braking? It seems extremely difficult to get a firm grasp on. I found that if I start braking AS I'm gradually coming off of the throttle, I can get a somewhat more reliable turn in without the back being so eager to switch places with the front. .. It's this just sort of an anomaly or is this similar to how the real thing is done? I'm kinda doubting it cuz the idea of being on the brake and throttle at the same time seems almost blasphemous lol. It just seems to be the only reliable way I've found so far to force more desired understeer. Granted I've probably done less than 100 laps in it but it's a real handful. Thanks for the answer btw.

Brian was taken out in the first lap mess. The car you're referring to was Derek, his brother. The cars have the same paint scheme but Brian's is navy and Derek's is black I believe. I am essentially passing my momentum (gained from a better exit or slipstreaming) to the car in front of me, allowing both of us to go faster and catch the car ahead (or pull away from the car behind). Hi is it me or it seems like your car is just a little faster than some other cars. It looks like at 6:25 coming out of last turn the car in front got a better exit than you but you end up catching him later in the straight. Not sure if it's drafting or something else

Hi Jonathan, good question. It is indeed the draft that you're seeing in this instance (and many others in this video). The draft really begins to kick in around 100MPH which is about exactly where you see it in the example you noted. Once we hit 5th gear (100-105MPH) the draft becomes a significant factor and closing rates become very noticeable. Thanks for watching and posting!

Hi Roman, thanks for watching. Yes, you are exactly correct. The driver of the silver car was just racing me hard and did nothing wrong whatsoever! I was driving a bit angry and frustrated after the first lap mess. I've actually used this video for instructional purposes as it clearly shows how much more effective a driver can be once they settle down and dispense with "the red mist".

Congrats on P3 from P13 but I definitely want to take a look at the rule book for your league. Those guys passing everyone before the leader has even started the race is a load of crap. They should have at least lined everyone back up and did another restart.

JApple157 We run sealed, spec 1.9L 4-cyl engines. Starting next year we're migrating to a new engine package. It'll be a 1.6L 4 but with 20 more HP and weighing ~100 pounds less. At Road America, in a draft, we hit around 125 on the longer straights. That will go up by I suspect 10+ MPH with the new motor package. Thanks for posting!

Were the three knuckleheads who jumped the start (passing before the Green Flag and start/finish line) DQ'd? Did anyone pay a visit to the officials and lodge a verbal protest on a completely botched start (should have sent the field around on another pace lap)? Common problem with spec cars on a fast circuit... A line of cars running the draft are going to freight-train a single car. Excellent drive, but greater skill can't overcome the drafting horde sometimes.

Hey Richard, thanks for the question. First off, yes the "jeez..." comment was completely a joke. :) Secondly, you'll notice that I chose to go three wide into the braking zone, not the corner. They are very different scenarios. I agree with you, I would never go three wide into a corner, especially as the outside car. That's a losing proposition every time. I had the middle car cleared as we neared the end of the braking zone but he slipped out and caught my tail, putting me off. Hindsight being 20/20, I would have been better off laying back to see what would transpire between the other cars. Live and learn.:) Thanks for posting!

Denny: I don't understand your idea that going into the braking zone three wide is a 'completely different scenario' than going into the corner. Did you really hope to out-brake them and go into the turn by yourself? I'm not saying you shouldn't have tried it - it was the logical thing to do, under the circumstances. It's too bad that you weren't on the inside - then it would have worked. What bothers me is that by using the word 'chicanery' you are implying that they did something wrong. Somebody got inside of me going into turn nine at Riverside (in 1985), and unfortunately, I didn't notice him. We tapped, I spun, wrecking my car on the wall. When he first came over to see how I felt about it, I said "No problem, that's racing, etc." But he kept after me so much that I finally told him that I didn't think it was a very good idea for him to try to pass me there, because he could have easily passed me coming out of the turn. That was what he wanted to hear, so he didn't have be apologetic anymore. He got me so upset I went one the officials to complain about it, and they said "Go away, little boy - that's racing." The difference is that thanks to KZbin, you could post your video of your great drive and your complaint of 'chicanery' immediately, while it's taken me 30 years to publicly confess my error.

Richard Maheu Hey Richard, that is a great story. I've heard some great things about Riverside (my dad used to watch Mark Donohue there I believe). To your point, I had no illusions of leaving that braking zone in the lead. I was hoping to come out in second, pushing the previous leader back to third. At Road America, there is one more big drafting zone going down into Canada and I felt that I needed to be in 2nd place coming out of the carousel, which really meant that optimally I needed to be in 2nd coming out of T5 which is where the incident occurred. My comment of chicanery was meant as a racing pun rather than poor driving or intention on either of the other guys' parts. It was purely a racing incident. I made an aggressive move but made it successfully (past the white car) and was in a position to gauge the situation and back out to third if need be (for instance, contact between the other cars) by going wide on the exit, but the bump happened while I was loaded up and that got me squirrelly and put me off. Sure I was chapped at the time, but I knew I had put myself in a position where that could happen. The very aggressive move was actually by the second place car who went to the grass on the left as the leader drove a defensive line (go back and watch just before I pull out of the draft). That exact move won the national championship a couple of years ago at Road America in our class (I'd link the vid but don't have it handy). The leader's defensive line opened up the outside line to me and I chose to take it as I had a head of steam and I knew he'd have to brake early for the guy inside of him. In hindsight, it didn't work out like I had it drawn up on my mental whiteboard. :) Thanks again! BTW, it sounds like the guy who got into you at Riverside was a bit of a punk.

When you keep intentionally "love tapping" the guy in front, is that a legal thing to do? Do the stewards tell you to stop doing that, or is it considered acceptable part of racing? It seems like it could be potentially dangerous if you happen to upset the rear of the car in front just as you're going over some bumps or something. A guy in iRacing kept doing it to me and I got quite annoyed, but judging by this video it seems to be common practice.

Love Tapping helps both of the drivers to get faster on the straights and keep pushing. It seems like a regular thing to do in this series, because they did like it.

Chris G Yep, it's "bump drafting". Both cars go faster. You'll see it in Nascar all the time, but never in open wheel classes (other than FVee) because they have no safe contact patches between the cars.

sonic_blue Drafting doesn't happen in "corners" (wherein I'm referring to a braking/turning event). It only happens while turning on tracks with large enough corner radii that the cars stay at wide open throttle (think Talladega). If you are getting bumped going into a corner like you're describing that's not at all drafting, but is "avoidable contact" and is usually frowned upon if not against the sanctioning body rules.

You're correct, to a point. I was driving with the dreaded "red mist" after the first lap disaster. I was wanting the silver car to work with me so we could move up through the pack (I was clearly quicker) but he wasn't doing so, so I was frustrated. In reality I had no reason to be as he was doing absolutely nothing wrong and was just racing me for position. I was still just rung up over the first lap mess. Once I got settled in and got my head right, it's pretty clear how quickly I moved through the pack and into the lead. I use this video to instruct sometimes specifically around how much *less* effective I was at the beginning when I was driving frustrated. I'm guessing you didn't watch the entire video to see when I finally calmed down (shortly after I got by the silver car). :)

Hey Drew, I'm guessing you didn't read other comments/explanations or watch the end of the video and that's completely expected. In short, you're right and your point is really the big takeaway from this video for young drivers. I was very upset after the start and drove with the 'red mist' for several laps. During that time I was wildly ineffective and struggled to advance out of 13th spot. I made aggressive, ill-timed passes, and was subsequently annoyed when other drivers re-passed me rather than working with me (including the silly gesticulations you mentioned). Once I settled down and got back in the zone though it's a different race. I very quickly moved to the front of the field and led the most laps of the race. The end didn't work out optimally but it's really a tale of two races: 1) driving angry after the start and being very ineffective and then 2) settling down into the zone and moving through the field very quickly to the lead of the race. I hope others who watch see the change in mindset and the resulting improvement and learn from it. Thanks for watching and posting!

To your point, I've actually used this video in driving instruction as a great example of the "red mist". I rarely get in that mindset, but I was in it after that botched start for sure. As a result, I drove more emotionally than clinically for the first part of the race and the result is clear: passes that were executed but were eventually unsuccessful with subsequent unwarranted frustration on my part. Once I settled down a few laps in I was able to march to the front of the field in short order (I'm guessing you didn't watch the whole video :) ). So it's not so much "not being very smart" but more like "driving angry" and you're right, it's not the optimal way around the track.

Dont like that bumping crap, you work your ass off to get a second on the field, and they swallow you back on the strait !!! No skill in this at all ..... racing isn't about bumping !

Why do you throw your hands up every time someone passes you? Are you too entitled to have someone drive around you? Man..its a race, fastest man gets the spot.

Good observation and you're spot on. I was driving angry from the first lap mess, or with the "red mist" as we often call it. This is a great instructional video on how much more effective a driver is once he gets past that. As you probably noticed, I was frustrated for a few laps that the silver car wasn't working with me to move up in the field but was battling for position, which is completely his right. Me throwing my hands up in frustration didn't gain me anything and was unwarranted. Once I settled down and just focused on my driving, I quickly moved to the front of the pack.
