I'm so sorry for Wild Rift, I'd like Riot to realize how much potential it has. I hope they use the money saved from esports to invest seriously in wr. What's more, it's true that nobody knows WR, they have a lot of ways to promote it, taking advantage of Arcane, LoL and all the other brands with a huge audience, yet they don't even mention it. Furthermore, the audience that makes use of mobile gaming is huge but its true, i've never seen Wild Rift ads, only and always mobile legends.

Youre passion for Wild Rift and everything that the scene has is why i love watching your videos. As someone who has worked in multiple businesses and studied marketing and development, id like to give insight into what i think happened behind the scene. 1. "If only asia scene was profitable in the esports scene, why did they not just do 3rd party events or just start smaller and grow organically?" Its not all that complicated. Basically, Riot devs ASSUMED Wild Rift would just succeed "Because its a Riot product!" The amount of ego this company has is unbelievable. But since all their other titles has been wildly popular, they assumed too much about the mobile scene, blew threw their budget, screwed themselves by investing too much too soon (along with poor marketing strategies) and it cost people their jobs, both the players and devs. 2. "But they are a big company, how could they screw up that bad?" Easy. Marketers arent developers, and vise versa. As ive experiences in past jobs, communication is rarely done well in big companies. In fact, its usually trash. I suspect that the marketing team was used to promoting PC titles, not mobile ones, and just assumed that whatever worked before will work now. Obviously, its easy to point out failures after the matter, but it doesnt suprise me that such a big company couldnt figure out simple concepts seeing as they had never released a title on mobile. 3. "Is there hope?".... honestly? It really depends. I actually doubt we will see more esports development in the west until better promotion of the game is actually achieved. But seeing as riot has like 3 other games on the horizon and only care about the money,....its hard for me to be overly optimistic. Hope im wrong but ive seen many good games and companies get sunk on poor management and marketing strategies. Its a damn shame but i still love this game for what it is. Love you Mr Hells, i will support you regardless of what you do or where you go ❤

thank you for the sober and deep analysis of the matter and I couldn't agree more. Riot just presumed and took for granted that, because they are Riot, anything they touch becomes gold just like that. Typical Riot being Riot: arrogant and money-hungry. On the other hand, we could use Blizzard and Overwatch as an example. Blizzard is as big as Riot and could just sit confortably on top of World of Warcraft, but they chose to maintain the relatively successful Overwatch by making puntual and smart investiments into the game, mantaining the fanbase and stable profit with it.

In 2020 I was sooo hyped up that League of Legends Mobile was coming out. I am from India and I like watching League of Legends content because of the characters but I couldn't play because of the server issues. Hearing this was like a fresh breath of air. I thought finally I can enjoy playing League characters. Two years have passed since then and It's still not released in India. I have stopped expecting Riot to release in my country. I switched to LoL to play on the garena servers. I am happy with that. No hope left for wild rift from me.

I am hopeful for the game. At the very least, Riot will invest in the game for China. That should mean that the other regions should still be able to benefit from the game being attended to, even if we don't get much attention in the esports scene. That may mean future balancing and reworks might be heavily influenced by how the game is played in China. In the meantime, I think you are right, if they invest in advertising/marketing, they could get a huge influx of new players from other regions. If/Once that happens, we may find our return to the competitive scene. As for the loot boxes. I personally do not like it at all and cannot see myself using it. But if it does fall with industry standards (however gross) and increases the money Riot receives from the game then it might show that the game is worth continued investment.

Exactly the same thing Vainglory did. I'm a Vainglory player and i grow up playing that game it was a game so beautiful and polished that put the other game to shame. And it was the first time i was actually started playing games and following content creators in KZbin daily for a game. And i started to watch you Hellsdevil the Vainglory days you were the same age as me and seeing someone enjoying so much as i did playing Vainglory felt incredible and i was looking forward being in a match with you and playing together in Vainglory. I could feel the passion and the ambitious on the game that reflected to the players and content creators and even to this day i can say that Vainglory is a far more beautifully designet than those new MOBA. But unfortunately the lack of advertising the sake for making a better game and making skins and stuff attainable if you focused a bit of time you could get the skin that u wanted. Pushing the agenda to the Esport making the game competitive and fun to play even though they really never had those money to spend on as the income wasn't there. (player's would stick playing month for month and getting free skins and stuff). That's when the Vainglory devs dicided that they should to make harder to get those attainable and i respect that but the playerbase just was used to getting free skins and there was nothing that could fix that. Vainglory suffered by the lack of advertisement and managing the reward system for skins and stuff but they just wanted to make the best game ever Even though the Dev team was small they made a diamond of a game. That hidden Gem that i enjoyed and the Vainglory community enjoyed so much♥️♥️♥️ The same Hidden gem like Wild Rift is and being going unotice and is reminded me again of Vainglory legacy. I hope u see my comments Hellsdevil. Kind of funny announcement of the Death of Wild Rift is a Jihn gameplay. Almost like it’s the Finale but it will get a standing ovation from me. You know what will save Wild Rift the show Arcane. If Riot releases that show and advertise it correctly and really showcases the game and show the players who devote themselves and the amazing thing you can do in the game it can be saved. DO NOT GIVE UP MY FRIENDS. I still make shorts for this game no matter how many views i get. I’ll start making content too. I am disappointed with Riot for not keeping their promises about E-sports and it's sad how people invested in E-sports got stabbed in the back with that announcement. HOWEVER. E-sports statistically is a very small percentage of the playerbase. 0.1%? 0.5%? Even if Wild Rift just got rid of eSports entirely and openly stated that eSports are never coming back it won't affect the general playerbase in any way. VG is a good example of that. eSports was a complete failure and was abruptly shut down but the game was fine. VG suffered waaaaay more from SEMC just outsourcing the running of the game to different company and shifting their focus to their new project Catalyst Black. Unless Wild Rift devs just similarly abandon the game, it's safe. Gacha spree is a way more worrying signal imo. It looks like Riot are testing the boundaries of how scammy their monetisation can get without driving away the community.

Everything you said was spot on. Wild Rift isn’t a well known game. I’ve asked a lot if they know about it and they said no. I mention league of legends mobile and they say something like oh yeah I think I saw that advertised on the App Store. If they advertised showing off some bad ass pentakills or team fights it’d so much different. Everyone knows raid: shadow legends, but if they did the same advertising that raid did wild rift would be HUGE. It’s head and shoulders above any other mobile game. First you build the fan base, then when you have it you bring out esports. You highlight the esports on the game itself. Seems pretty obvious to me.

I quite don't understand that. Like if they did some lootboxes through watching events, made some integrated player within the client to prompt about ongoing live events and so on I'm pretty sure they would get way more audience and build more awareness within playerbase. It just seems like they didn't really take all the opportunities for easy viewers. Like 12:55 is so damn true and I can't understand how that could even happen. Bro thats the entire point. ML is a kids game, i was glory for 2 years now, the amount of utter casual garbage until mythic 3 is just absolutely mind blowing. MOBA's are meant to be complex, you need to learn the mechanics in order to properly play them, i just don't get how insanely dumb the average person really is. How hard can it actually be to sit down and LEARN something. If people just want to play a chill game there are tons out there that require no actual brain activity besides pressing a single button every now and then. Its called idle games, and they are successful for a reason. And then this insane self-elevating of mythic 5 players that got boosted with enhanced mmr-matching with 40% supp only from epic 4. Epics try to teach me ingame how shit works, i have more games with a single hero then over half of them in total, and they still throw around with the phrase "noob" like it means something. As long as ML doesn't get rid of half of their playerbase WR will remain the objectively better MOBA, period.

I won't be surprised that Wild Rift will be closed by the end of 2023 because Riot treat it as a PC game instead of a Mobile game. For a Mobile game, I hate the ranking system. I completely agree with anything said. In regards to the European tournament, I've watched WR esports but had no idea about this. For EU, it wasn't even a skin reward, it was just some useless stuff like emotes and icon border. It baffles me how little marketing I've seen for this game considering the size of LOL. How did Riot not manage to take advantage of the huge hype/word of mouth around LOL that came out of Arcane? A mobile game was a perfect way to grab casual gamers into the world off the back of this.

This is the reality of esports that people need to understand. There's only room for a few winners. Look at physical sports - In the US at least you have baseball, basketball, American football, hockey, and (to some extent) soccer (EU football). esports is definitely here to stay but this notion that there's room in the market for new games to show up and be successful is wrong. I'm sure something will overtake the current popular ones some day but most will fail. So wild rift needs to stand on its own as a fun multiplayer game for non-pro esports people to play and people need to stop getting into games expecting them to be the next big esport.

You guys are the only ones who can make it work. It will help the community to become more competitive and keep them in game. Also to encourage esports, Riot could have created a special event every week or two, like in-game tournament etc, with pre-registration and all the things needed for that, where the prize would be, again, wild cores, or smth else, a champion title you can see in your profile, some rare exclusive skin, or smth else. My take of why wildrift didn't pop off is • Wildrift isn't beginner friendly, when I first started playing wildrift, when playing normal games I was getting teamed with ranked players while being unranked which makes it hard for me to actually enjoy the game, because of unbalanced math making it made it very hard for new players to enjoy the game itself which stops a lot of casual gamers (which are majority of mobile gamers are) from staying playing the game and only hardcore gamers are the one that stayed. • Gatekeeping, In my country a lot of people Gatekeep the game itself saying that only LOL players should only play this game and any content creators that played the wildrift were bashed especially if they play Mobile legends, based on experience a lot of toxic players where bashing new and bad players and saying to stop playing the game and go back to playing mobile legends • There is no casual games at the beginning for wildrift and all game modes were very sweaty as even to this day playing normal games is so sweaty as I'm always being paired with high ranks players which is hard for me as a casual players to actually play which caused a lot of burn out when playing. • The reason why riot is trying to rush wildrift is because of the market of mobile moba, as we know Mobile legends is one of the biggest mobile moba outside of china and because riot wants to complete with them they try to rush as much as possible to complete with ML, causing them to spend millions of dollars to a developing community, as it takes time for a community to grow, causing low amount of views in streams as there's not a lot of people played the game still. • the lack of advertisment for me is not really the reason why the game didn't pop off, because a game has only a small window for a game to become big if they miss this window they will have a hard time actually growing. I think what they should have done is invest more in content creators as they bring the most attraction of new player to the game but sadly they didn't really invest that much I remember when the game was released I only saw a few content creators actually making the content about the game. •The reason why eSports in NA and Europe have small viewers because mobile games are generally not popular in these countries as they are heavily dominated by PC and console games, so because of this people would rather watch and play LOL than to play Wildrift.

Honor of Kings (China) which is the most popular mobile game and MOBA in China (yes its even more popular than PC LoL), Mobile Legends (SEA) and Arena of Valor (SEA, mainly Vietnam and Thailand) have already taken the majority of MOBA mobile gamers before Wild Rift came out. Wild Rift was just too late to debut. Plus those games I mentioned are more casual friendly than Wild Rift, so its gonna attract more people. Since those games are already so established, its just gonna attract more people (E.g. Honor of Kings has its own Chinese drama series with one of the most currently popular Chinese actress Dilraba Dilmurat, Mobile Legends is promoted on Head and Shoulders shampoo in SEA, they got SEA celebrities/athletes such as Pacquiao, Iko Awais promoting ML, in South America they got Neymar promoting the game and have him his own skin, ML matches are televised on local tv in SEA, Mobile Legends is pretty much a household name in SEA) You just dont see that with Wild Rift. Honor of Kings and Mobile Legends are also used like a Dating app in Asia 😂 Im not lying with that one. Mobile esports in the West is pretty much looked down upon (E.g. youre too bad at LoL so you play WR instead cos its easier, with quality of life being higher in the West, most people can afford PC/console gaming, which leads to "you must be poor for PC/console gaming if youre a mobile gamer"), most people are not take mobile gaming seriously. I dont see mobile esports being successful in NA and EU anytime soon. In regions such as SEA, South America, South Asia, mobile games are popular cos most people cannot afford PC/Console gaming cos the quality of life is lower. In Japan, mobile gaming is popular cos it suits their busy lifestyle. And ofc China just loves mobile gaming in general. I do still think WR is the better mobile MOBA gameplay/mechanics wise, but its gonna continue to die (I personally think its been dead since the beginning), especially if its not doing well in mobile gaming regions in the first place.

I started playing wild rift a couple days ago after my PC died. And I have to say… I love it. Like, it’s more accessible than league ever was. It has a fairly comprehensive tutorial that league never had back in the day when I played it. The controls, although difficult to get used to, feel pretty intuitive. And it fulfills what I was expecting it to fulfill. It’s league in your pocket. It’s easy to jump into a game. It’s fun. Like… the only thing I think is actually holding it back from being worth playing is that veteran league fans would probably find regular league to be objectively better for one reason or another. My experiences so far though have been altogether positive to the point that I prefer wild rift over league. And will absolutely continue to play it.

The level of audience that these competitions have in our regions is nothing compared to the one they have on Asia. Tencent and Riot forced themselves into this corner and they failed. This was inevitable. They failed on multiple things starting from Wildrift's conception. 1. They were late in making this game as ML already had the foothold to the mobile market 2. They underestimated SEA and Asia's mobile gaming market and overestimated the West's market (except Latin America) 3. They blew millions of dollars forcing Esports into this new game for a market dominated by kids and teens who won't spend that much time watching and supporting Esports. 4. Now that Esports failed, they have to pedal back, and now they lost the trust of the competitive playerbase. They should have started small with only 3-4 regions. This issue exposed Riot's complacency and lack of oversight. The game won't die, but people's opinion to WR might as well be dead especially with how badly they timed this announcement while they dropped a gacha event on our heads

I can't really blame Riot here. They needed to back out to protect themselves. Its the criticism in the west or eu(NOT ALL) on mobile gaming that's killing something with potential. No matter how much you shove mobile gaming in those places, you'll get discrimination. Here in SEA, its still strong. WCS Philippines is still going on sooo, yeah. Its these 2 regions that's uninterested in mobile gaming.

Finally Hells.. The video I was anticipating came out after 2-3 months of waiting. Really liked the way you explained Marketing and Esports however it is just not the marketing which is at problem. Even word of mouth didn't spread. There are reasons for that and although the game is objectively very great but it isnt suitable to mobile tbh. I have played Mobile Legends and the game that was in stream was going on for about 30mins.. It's too long, if My ML game goes more than 15mins, I used to loose my patience and what Dave Assassin mentioned, the game feels slow and time consuming due to its complexity, mobile games are casual and FAST PACED in nature that is the reason the public left. Look forward to watching more videos on state of Wild Rift, soon we are about to receive 'AutoChess MOBA' and 'Honor of Kings' who already have promised and set up huge esports tournaments in next year, my guess is WR players from EU and NA will migrate to them soon. P.S: WR is still in beta and have no plans yet to launch in South Asia.

Riot Games isn't really gonna focusing on Asia as what they say in their statement, they didn't really focuses the game in different regions. Start from its launch Riot really focuses on China, from tournaments to advertisements, they spent massive amount of money in advertisements and tournaments in China. Focusing on "Asia" isn't true and just a sugar coated term as they really wanted to full focus China. In their statement as well, 12 teams are coming from China (WRL) and 8 are from Southeast Asia maybe KR and JP regions are included in SEA? We don't know. Riot don't really advertised this game outside China yet they wanted this game to be the top tier moba in mobile platform. This game is gonna die that's for sure, instead of looking for more ideas to promote their game here they're abandoning regions. They didn't spend their money and ideas really well. It's only one way around, League of Legends : Wildrift is about to die. RIP Wildrift, your Devs started its self-destruction.

The irony is that Riot not hugely marketing and advertising for Wild Rift and waiting for it's popularity 🤣

I appreciate your concern, I wouldn't like it to happen. The game is amazing, and they made over 5 mil $ last month. I don't think they're doing bad, wild rift is more casual than PC LoL I understand the concern, but they can do many different things in the future.

Considering wildrift didn't explore the Indian and Chinese market which are 2 of the largest mobile game scenes in the market I saw this coming from a mile away. Edit: mb considering the fact that the world events etc were held in Europe and the lack of Chinese events shared thought China's scene was miniscule

I was not very engaged with the esports because it was only on Twitch and didn't have a channel on LOLEsports or other Riot channels. It was hard to find schedules, brackets, rankings, etc. I had no idea there was a skin available for watching something. All that said, if new leagues are created (similar to LCS, LEC, LJL, LCK, etc.) then this could be great news for Wild Rift.

I used to play Vainglory and it was really a sad moment to have seen its collapse. Mobile Legends became popular but I never really played. I didn’t know about League of Legends properly until Wildrift’s debut. The moment I saw the trailer on the app store, I downloaded the game with no hesitation and played it right away. And true enough, I found it to be the best game and always played since. Spending money on skins was never a tough decision to make. So watching this video breaks my heart. I always wondered why Wildrift wasn’t getting the attention it deserves. Wildrift is truly a gem of a game and I hope Riot re-evaluate their marketing strategy. As for you Hells, I like you bud so you have my support. Please please continue creating Wildrift content because you are great at it and I hope Riot finds a place for you in the game. God bless

Esports is what keeps a game alive past it’s time, I’m an ex Warcraft lll player, and due to the esports scene, the game is still alive 20+ years past it’s time, due to the community taking a grassroot approach and propping the game up. as a hardcore gamer with hopes of growing the mobile gaming community- it seems as if Wild Rift SKIPPED a lot of the grassroots build up to the esports scene and just jumped directly into coordinating with professional and established teams, this puts a 4th wall up since it doesn’t give a-lot of hope to the average gamer, they need to leave room for players to aspire to be better, otherwise they’re just going to leave because it’s “just a mobile game.” If I wasn’t running a large level 18 guild in NA, I would have been gone too. If wild rift would help community leaders grow their base with online tournaments open to the public the game could take off again. But that would take a dedicated team to do so. I really wish that Wild Rift could bridge that gap in the esport scene by helping some of us in the trenches. This game STILL has a ton of potential, I hosted 2 duel tournaments with great success and was gaining momentum, then they took out duels to add another troll mode..all for one. If they would allocate their money to the right areas, they could accomplish A-LOT more for less. I have faith in you Wild Rift.

Here’s the bottom line and you can find any of this info online with a simple search. WR made 500 million last year, but that was mostly in CN with some flow from SEA, but very little from NA, EU and SA. Player base continuously dropped from the drop date in every region except for SEA and CN. Now, before all of this Tencent refused to let Riot release a mobile version of LoL. They said no for 5 years straight, but they realized that if they allowed Riot to release WR, they could go after Moonton for MLBingBong copyright and harm done and that is EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID. They couldn’t sue Moonton without a game on the same format. This has been in court in the US since WR released. Tencent/Riot sued for everything right down to the fonts they used in the game. Now, as of Nov 11, 2022, the US courts decided that Tencent/Riot could not pursue this law suit, because there was no clear way to define Tencent and Riots role in the development of WR. They were told they needed to sue in CN and therefore there was no way to get the billions they were trying to get from Moonton in NA. NA, EU and SA are all dead regions monetarily to Riot and even more so to Tencent and within one week of this lawsuit being shot down, Riot pulled comp from NA, EU etc They never took this game seriously. Only reason they’re keeping it in CN and SEA is because they’re actually making money. Full stop, end of story. It will never leave beta, because it was never meant to. I’ve known you since VG days, Hells. That’s why WR was basically all interns and no marketing. It’s quite clear.

I'm also a player of wildrift not a pro but I love playing wildrift, because I was also a player of LOLPC, and yes there are a lot mistakes RIOT made in terms of promoting the game. And you're right as well that in terms of promoting the game, we wildrift player didn't know that there's a WORLDS going on we knew that on your channel in this particular video, it's just sad that this prestigious company, game might fall faster than we think. Don't get me wrong, I love this game more than any MOBA games, I even stand up with RIOT when MLBB is copyrighting the game. I feel you man this really makes a grown-up man sad and cry.
