This is exactly what should happen from a psychological perspective. When you have someone who doesn't recognize the authority that's in front of them, either through their own choices/beliefs (like this defendant) or through mental illness (sociopathy / psychopathy) the proper course of action is to not engage them at all -- they should be relegated to an observer where important people decide their fate without their input, permission, or desires being considered. This minimizes and marginalizes their importance and begins to force them to accept that they are not in control. Judges, prosecutors, witnesses, and victims should speak about the defendant completely in the 3rd person, as if they are not there, and should not even mention their presence or importance. If you notice, this defendant became less and less talkative and much more silent as the proceeding went on, as it slowly dawned on her that she was no longer in control. This is how you defeat people who do not recognize authority -- you impose it on them with unstoppable will.

The main problem with that here is that she is representing herself. If she is gagged, then it removes her ability to advocate/defend herself, which is an important right. Obviously, she should not be behaving like this, and it is utterly ridiculous. It would be entirely her fault if that happened, and she is not helping herself with the ability to talk. Was the same issue with the Brooks case. I think they would have had to appoint counsel first.

@Sinjin and you could argue that the judges need to be given more ability to force defendants to be represented by counsel if they are not able to do so adequately or behave in court. But you can't just take away someone's right to any defence because they are a dipshit or are suffering from a mental illness. I think that the judge here needed to have her gagged, but she would have had to be represented to do that ethically.

IF people were rational about issues where pride is involved it would be a deterrent. Short version is that human beings refuse to assess things is clear manner when emotional. If judges said "30 more days for contempt you want any more?" I can guarantee there would be an alarmingly large number of people suddenly suddenly getting 30 year sentences because they were mad and in their mind "refused to bow down" Effective judges know to say "go to jail for a few days, come back and then I will listen to whatever else you want to say to me". They have time to calm down, realize their mistake, and THEN spend all that extra time in a cell asking themselves "was it worth it?" But even after time in jail sometimes people STILL double down... Even ones who are not mentally ill just petulant douchebags.
