I'm a Wild Turkey fan, but I just recently tried Rare Breed for the first time, and my impressions matched your review perfectly. At the risk of sacrilege, I used it also for an old fashioned, all the way, with muddled orange, and a dash of Angostura, Orange, and Peycard's bitters. It made the best old fashioned I ever had.

As far as dropping some ice, the best response to that is what I've heard Daniel on the Whiskey Vault say. "The best way to drink whiskey is the way YOU like to drink whiskey." Drop ice in it if you wish.

This particular blend goes well with a single ice cube and a little water to swish around with afterwards. Helps unlock a lot of the many flavors within.

Some whiskeys are better with a few drops of water or over a block of ice to tame them down some. Baker 7 by Jim Beam is one I couldn’t stand neat but over a ball of ice the flavors come out better for me. Rare Breed is another that’s terrific over a ball of ice.

Hi Jon! I usually use a good strong Rye for an Old Fashioned but tonight I am sipping an outstanding Old fashioned using Wild Turkey Rare Breed and it is spectacular. This is amazing for sipping whiskey but I also love this expression in this particular cocktail which is a favourite. I prefer good scotch or a whiskey neat but once in awhile this is the drink for me. Very well priced. The tobacco (so delicious!!), mint, perhaps slightly different than peppermint, good and spicey with what I think is a beautiful mouth coating, toffee, vanilla and a slightly sweet orange that I get on the finish. I think I taste tangerine. Love it! The toffee tastes nice and sweet like I want in a Bourbon and on the finish I get a huge hit of toffee and sweet caramel. They taste a bit different as sweets. There is a richness coming from the toffee that I can taste. I love the slightly bitter quality but it's not too bitter. I enjoy this Bourbon very much. What a huge deal price wise!! Sure I have fancy Bourbons and expensive single malt scotch expressions but this amazing spirit is lovely with a cocktail too and yes that turns some people off but it's what I enjoy as well as sipping it neat!! Great spirit. No it doesn't rise to heresy!! I am a fan. Lol!! Cheers Jon!! 🙂

I love wt 101, but this is $65 CAD in Ontario. There's also Woodford double Oaked at 59, "on sale" for a week normally 69 (no it's not a joke), and I'm not nearly as much in love with the regular Woodford reserve compared to wt101, which is also a lot cheaper. But people rave about double Oaked and I'm hoping it's w reserve with more flavor and unique character (more sweet and a little smokey). Which one should I get can't buy both. Thanks also wondering if wt RB has more burn and pepper than wt 101 (I don't notice much of either it's delicious the way it's handled in my copy of 101), or is it the opposite?
@WhiskyNeighbour
@WhiskyNeighbour 2 жыл бұрын
Prices are wild. We pay more for Double Oak out here and Rarebreed just dropped again into the $45 range. Which is an absolute must at that point. I find these very different and oddly, I am not as in love with Double Oak as nearly everyone else. I enjoy it, great bourbon, but at $70 there are other bottles on my shelf. The double oak adds exactly that, more wood tannins, a little more smoke or char, and more vanilla. I do preferr it to the regular woodford. Here RB is hotter than 101, but more hot cinnamon not hot pepper for me. Also more oak than 101, but not as much as the Double Oak, and still has that characteristic slight sour I get from Wild Turkey. (This is an old video!)

A fan of WT 101, but I wish they would cut down on the number of different issues. Between the limited editions, the standard ones, and a dozen reviews for each, it becomes a dizzying research project to choose one over the other. I regard 101 as one of the standard bourbon profiles and a good value. Picking and comparing any other WT/Russell's issue then becomes a question of whether it's worth the money.

I managed 3 bottles but haven't opened yet, not many reviews around for this one and still a few left. I think the $30 price increase to $100 (here in Ontario) has possibly hurt sales. @@WhiskyNeighbour thanks. I do really like those 3 Bourbons you just mentioned. I'll give that forty Creek a try as well. I know there's two more above the one I normally drink one comes in at 70 and the other one is at almost $80. Maybe I'll try the other one too if I see it. Thanks again.

At that proof nothing wrong with ice imo. Splash of water even necessary.

@@WhiskyNeighbour yeah I read an article or KZbin video or something somewhere that explained scientifically why you should add some water to your spirits if having them neat. Something about how it is more flavorful and releases more aromas.

I never drink whisky above 45%, without adding water. 45%+ just tears into my pallet.

I like having a higher abv, so I can add water as I feel . Sometimes I do enjoy the full strength. Just small sips then.

I wasn't a fan of this. I have to look somewhere else if I am ever to make it into bourbon😉 Nice review though🙂

Of all the Wild Turkey, I think I like this one the best. It had less of the sour note that I pick up in most of their products. It's not my favourite Bourbon, but I enjoyed it!
