The story's concept was interesting, but the execution was truly lacking in many respects. As Kevin Smith said about Jon Peters, "...in Hollywood, you just kind of fail upwards". Peters is a nutcase, and sadly, those idiots get tons of work in an industry firmly set against traditional American values. Every time I see his name on a film that I like, I'm both surprised while also wanting to throw up.

Yeah, you're right. The original 1965 version was a lot better because it was more serious and dark. This 1999 adaptation is solely comedy based. One can easily discern that when they find out Will Smith is acting the part of Jim West.
