I hiked in to one of my favourite (and slightly crazy) mountain forests for a tarp camp, and had a go at pitching my tarp using a pine tripod. Not sure if it’s right or not but it held up great so can’t be too bad :D
The wind got up in the early hours and made me nervous as the pines fall all over the place in this forest, so I got packed up at dawn and headed to my next location
See you next time for a tarp camp next to a mountain lake in strong wind & heavy rain! It was interesting haha!
Thank you for watching 😊 Much love, Claire 🌿🐻

You are such a great, creative shelter maker. I've watched four of your videos this evening. I wouldn't want to camp alone in the forest. I would be terrified of wild animals. I admire your spirit. Keep em coming.

Wild animals? Here in the UK, we have children's story book animals, such as Fox's, Badgers, Squirrels and Hedgehogs. No venomous spiders and only 1 venomous snake which is very shy and rarely seen. Which makes camping in the UK very much safer.

Claire I also enjoy my own company and have to recharge my batteries after too much socializing, I do that by getting alone. You are definitely not alone ( no pun intended) in this. A quiet empty beach where I can surf or at least be near the water is my go to place. Unfortunately I live in a vacation resort town and it gets excessively busy with tourists during the spring and summer which I dislike more and more as i get older. My long term plan is to move away to a quiter place and retire there, but I have a ways to go before I reach retirement age. By the way I love your videography, you being a photographer makes sense now, the videos are done very well. Love from Florida 😊- USA

If it works, it's right Claire. ;-) Another consideration for your setup would be to just use a shear pole setup for that configuration and then guy them out to either side of the opening. That way you can put a fire right out front without fear of setting your third tripod leg on fire. Not that there was anything wrong with your setup in this situation. It was stable and didn't fall down on you during the night so it was a win! Keep up the great work Claire! Love your videos!

Whoa! Right at the end of your video, as you're walking away, you pass an uprooted tree, and the rootball is taller than you are! You look at it like "oh, that's just a normal occurence," then you just keep on talking and hiking! I can tell you just love what you are doing, so I hope you keep on living your best life and encouraging us to do the same! Thank you so much for being you!

love the Q&A section Claire, also a great explanation being scared vs risk, you always have risk and as you say, it's mitigating the risk that allows you to not hide up in doors. Totally agree with the bad humans! great little camp too, nice and easy, and it must be right as it stood there all night. 😀

Another superb video, I love watching your videos they are truly inspirational - I love the comment about bad humans and being safer than a city centre as how true is that, I can relate 100% as I am a bit of a lone wolf, I don’t need a lot of people around me just 1 or 2 is happy days. Have a fantastic week Claire and keep these amazing videos coming, you should have your own TV show about the outdoors, if anyone from National Geographic is watching please reach out to Claire as she is amazing 👍🏻👍🏻😀

You are absolutely Lovely. Everything about you. Ever since I was a little girl, at night , while laying in bed, I'd pretend I was out in the forest, and I was in some cozy little shelter that I had constructed myself. Sadly, I never really made that happen, for real. Don't get me wrong, my mom and dad would take my brother and I camping, often. Hiking, fishing, etc. However, I've never had a go at it by myself. Mostly due to fear of being alone! I think it's time to wrestle that fear. Thank you for sharing your beautiful experiences. They always calm me and make me smile. Safe travels, always!! ❤

There seems to be something "romantic" about a pretty woman camping alone in the wild, but I agree with you. The chances of her being hurt in an accident or bothered by a bad person makes solo camping just too risky. I have to wonder why these women like being alone? Seriously?

I do photography just as a hobby but have won a couple of photography contests. Is there any way I could send you one of them to look at and give me your honest opinion of it. I would be honored. The fact that you are a professional photographer really shows on the quality of your videos and the editing that you do ; and of course, the occasional drone footage (assuming you don't lose the drone !!) I suspect it's that video quality which makes some people think that you must have someone else filming you. Keep going ; And stay safe 👍

I’m not a person who finds commenting easy all the time unless I know a person. (Socially awkward) 🙄 But.. You gave an Interesting talk in the middle there. I understand the need to be alone and what it gives a person. Most people are inherently social at heart. But some of us, not so much. It seems to me a lot of people who wild camp are cut from a similar cloth. I hope you’ve had a good day.

Nice one Claire. Lovely to hear something of your rationale behind the things that you do, well done to you and long may it continue. Your tarp set-up looked great although you were a little concerned about it's stability. Take away that worry by learning a very simple but extremely useful knot ie., the tripod lashing. This has so many uses around the camp and bushcraft in general.. Hope you do learn it and use it in the future. Take care WildOne.

Hello Claire from NZ, Thank you for sharing your fears. I have been in the mountains for over 50 years as a guide and as a teacher of bush craft ( and I'm still teaching). To help my students over come their fear of being alone I take them night tramping (hiking) and during the day I give them half an hour start on the bush track with a two way radio and follow behind, the radio not to be used unless in an emergency. This helps them over come their fears etc, on being alone. Of course the tracks over here are covered in dense bush and one can go for weeks without seeing anyone. you would love it over here Claire especially if you want to be alone. enjoy your videos.

That was pre cellphones internet like ancient times. Your channel and style are inspiring and as I approach level 70 I've been like the Borg hiker assimilating gear and insights like yourself. Pretty soon I'll be geared up and then start saving for my first pitch in many years. Cheers

Well done you for giving the tripod a go. And yes, careful amongst them conifers, they have relatively short roots for such tall trees. Bad humans are the worst. I think in Jan you’ll be okay ticks-wise although I’m no expert and someone on here will be. Anyway, I think you’re brilliant 😀🌻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I for one, think you're adorable. I'm sure those who may question 'Are you really alone?' are just thinking 'Who is recording?' I've been doing video production for around 34 years myself. Yes folks, I'm confident that Miss WildBeare is quite capable of shooting her own stuff. She's good and I enjoy her Vids.

Hi Wild Beare you are absolutely right with being scared of humans ..2 years ago in fall I've been up north Saskatchewan Canada was about 260km of any settlement including native reserves on a road to a remote mine..i pitched up base camp at a lake ..I wanted to scope out a nice island and stay there for 2 weeks by my self...next day was fine I found an island and made plans to go there next morning but it was to windy next day so I stayed another night in base.. at 7 shortly before dark a truck blocked me in..two natives in there with huge gang tattoos and a really scetchy attitude.. I had no weapon other then a knife and a spear for the bears ... while the one guy was talking to me the other did some recon on my camp...he ask ..."what you doing here".. "I am fishing" my answer...he.."its dangerous here"...I say.."well I am prepared" ...I ask ..."what you doing here "..he says... "just driving around" ....well finally they left and I had the feeling they will come back I need to be prepared ..so I put everything in my van behind the tent so I can leave quickly.. you could not see my tent other then from the other side of the bay I was at ..the other 3 sides where dense Canadian shield bush .. at 9 I was in my tent had the stove going and reading the bible as I like to do... my tent glows at night because of the light so you could very well see it from the other side of that bay I am sure of that...all of the sudden they started to shoot at my campsite the bullets flew all over the place and hit the rocks in front of the tent..I shut the lights off and the shooting stopped...they could not see me no more...I knew I had about 15 min before they could be at my tent...so I ripped the stove out scrambled the tent together and left.. then I drove full of adrenalin 60km gravel road thru the bush at night and then another 200km forest highway before I could get cell service to call the cops.. I passed no car the whole way that's how remote I was.. well does that stop me from going in the bush..no.. but now I have a 12 gauge with me for humans and still a spear for the black bear as they usually fuck of when you lift it over your head and yell ... keep on making those awesome videos

Hi, first of all thank you for your videos, love coming along on your adventures :) I just want to say a few things on lyme disease for you or anyone else that may have concerns. I have late stage lyme disease myself, and have some advice which I've acquired over the years. Prevention is, of course, the most important step; Knowing where they like to reside, how they attach themselves to you. Permethrin is supposed to be very effective for repelling ticks. The following steps are very important. 1. Learn how to properly remove them. 2. Do not discard it. Save it to be tested by your local lab for lyme and other co-infections (Many doctors will insist this is either not possible or not necessary, but it is, I have done it). 3. See a doctor about possibly getting tested and/or on antibiotics. If treated within 4 weeks, lyme disease can be eliminated. Unfortunately, most doctors do not recognize lyme disease, so you may have to be persistent. It serious, but very preventable. So please be mindful, arm yourself with the right knowledge, and get out there and have fun!

The good thing about bad humans if that’s not a contrary description, is that we learn to recognise and avoid them. We adapt, we change and we create a way of life without them. Makes perfect sense to me. I’m not anti-social, just not comfortable in social settings. The last 2 years of home working has been good for me if I’m honest. Being comfortable with your own company is a good skill to have. Funny how people assume being alone in a forest is scary, when in actual fact you’re statistically safer than in an urban setting. As long as you’re mindful of surroundings, prepared for most eventualities and use common sense, you’re going to be just fine. Thanks for the video and the Q&A too Claire. Hope you have a great weekend 👍🏻

Really respect your vulnerability in your answers and can say I very much relate, the sound of life is a good vibe in contrast to the things we’ve known or see through. Life is life yes, but if we can find that which makes us happy, we should embrace it. So I’m glad you do with the great outdoors, you’re a fine example of human so thankyou and good vibes to yourself from mine 🙏🏻😊

Scared? You don’t live in a place with bears, wolves, Moose, etc…. Even so, if you practice good food practices, you’re still safer in the woods than a big city…..though I may not say that late at night in my tent 😀

6:40 I'm exactly the same. I do the long walks for the escape and the sense of freedom. I have a campervan though so I don't use tents. I'm quite introverted and actually find myself getting a little angry if I come across other people in the countryside, which of course all belongs to me ;-). There's something very soothing about the linear nature of just walking from A to B, - even if A and B are the same place. It's aligned with my general mindset. We get mentally pulled all over the place in our modern lives with all manner of issues to deal with. So to escape from that in a picturesque and peaceful environment is wonderfully therapeutic.

You should be just fine in an evergreen forest even in the wind. You need to watch for the obvious widow makers or leaning trees where the roots look a bit suspect. Most camping in the Canadian Rockies is all evergreen forest. For safety, when not in an established campground, I do like to camp where I can have my non-restricted firearm along with bear spray. I'm told the UK is even more restrictive than Canada for that. ☹ Like me, I'm sure you never get sick being out in nature. I'll never tire of these rocky mountains and foothills. They provide me with recreation, food and sometimes solitude when I venture out alone.

Introverts unite! Lol. I wanna read the book called " Quiet" by Susan cane! It's a book about introverts living in a world dominated by the social demand of society and natural extroverts. It's not that we don't like people, it's more about stimulus and the negative aspect of not being genuine when your tired of socializing or any stimulus. ( or who you are as an individual) There are costs and benefits. But the point is not to compromise who you are to fit in while fitting in.... if that makes sense.

Good for you, very brave. Where I am, apart from bad humans, there are mostly wild dogs and pigs. One always takes some bush crafting tools. Even on group day walks I am prepared for an emergency overnight, but on group day walks, that can be pretty minimal. The more I have to rely on myself & the longer the trip, the more prepared I will be for any eventuality at any time at all. There are sometimes stories of animals that shouldn't be there. I have never personally had a bad incident, but I have seen what looks like cat prints some 8 cm wide and just one time saw a large black animal (heavier than me) running in a crouch, along the bottom of a shallow gully across a clearing. It dove into bushes just behind a flock of ducks gathering to roost for the night. It can't have made a sound as it was only maybe 5m behind the ducks & didn't disturb them at all. It was too far away to make a positive ID, but it kept low and flowed like liquid down the gully. I thought that's serious predator behaviour & just left the area immediately, using the terrain to keep out of sight. I have also had pigs grunting around my camp at night, I just stay still & quiet. If a wild boar rips a leg artery, your gone in maybe 4 minutes. So don't be the one to start something, but be prepared. Also have come across the occasional cantankerous billy goat defending his ladies, so far it's just been snorting to let me know to keep away & I'm happy to oblige too. There was one time a small herd of cattle moved me on from fishing. One of the boys made move so that I had to stop moving away, turn & face him off. Fortunately he backed down. I'm pretty sure he was about to have a go if I hadn't done that.

Ticks are bad indeed got plenty of them around here with TBE and Borrelia. Got Borrelia once, is that Lyme Disease in english? but it is curable. TBE is bad though you can lose your memory from it, heard of a young man, a student, who lost his memory of the two last years, bad for his studies & for his girlfriend...but there are vaccine. The underside of a fallen fir the root roll, the root part, is dangerous as it can snap back in place if the tree is cut or something...kids are always warned about them after a big storm which have felled trees like I was in '68 and kids after the one in January '05 as I encountered a boy and his mother on the train and he was so fascinated by all the the fallen trees and root rolls you could see through the window.

Stumbled across your channel recently and have been binge watching ever since! Had to comment on this video because of what your Q&A portion. You do it for all the same reasons I do.... ask me if I'm religious and I'll tell you no but if I had a church it's on a mountain top in my hammock or tent watching the wild around me. Getting out and in the woods, especially by yourself, is one of the most incredible feelings in the world and I haven't been able to do it at all lately because of personal circumstances this year. Been a rough one so thank you for posting these videos so I can live vicariously thru your adventures!!

I feel that if it worked, and it certainly seems like it did quite well, that you didn't do anything wrong at all. :) I'm not sure if you're familiar with the "lone star" ticks we have in America, but they're exceptionally awful because they can cause a permanent allergy to red meat!
