You didn't mention that ape muscle insersions to the bone are attached differently to those in humans. Their slightly different attachment points gives them more leverage off the bone fulcrums. This alone gives them a HUGE advantage in strength compared to humans!

In particular, the biceps inserts a bit further distally on the radius bone, allowing for the increased leverage mentioned. This makes them particularly well suited to climbing.

Most people talking bs here have never seen a Gorilla in person. When you are actually in front of the animal you see exactly how robust and solidly built it is. It is a frightening sight. A Silverback male is literally built like an industrial refrigerator, his forearms and pectorals are very well developed and their grip strength is straight up monstrous, hardened calloused knuckles from walking on them all day. People saying xyz person can "knock out" a gorilla are utterly clueless. Gorillas have no necks, and their heads are a literal fortress of bone. The browridge alone should give you a clue. Look up a gorilla skull and tell me you can feasibly give it a concussion without breaking your own knuckles.

At the Miami Zoo, keepers often throw coconuts at the gorillas for the entertainment of visitors. Gorillas peel coconuts with their bare hands with the same ease as a human peels a banana. The strength and hardness of the fingers penetrating the coconut is extraordinary. The whole process of shelling a coconut takes them 3 or 4 seconds.

Silly to even try to compare this, worked at a zoo in my youth. I watched a 90lbs female chimpanzee flip an 1100 lbs concrete bench completely airborne during a rage event. Gorilla at the same zoo sat down and pulled a 3 foot long 18" tree stump out of poured concrete. Male Orangutan slipped one finger through the bars and snapped a hardwood broom handle he managed to snag that was too close. I could go on with numerous animal stories.

There's a video of two female gorillas fighting and the huge silverback twice the size of the females who were fighting rushed them and knew who started the fight. He pinned her to the ground and just held her down for a few seconds until she calmed down. He could've killed her but was giving her a timeout and soon let her up. He let them both know who was the pack leader and did not tolerate any violence among his wives. The speed he showed in running to the fight and which he pinned her was breathtaking

I remember as a child going to Bensons Wild Animal farm in Hudson New Hampshire. They had a Gorilla named Colossus who was a huge nearly 500 lb. Silverback. I remember him taking a car tire and tossing it against a wall and having it come back and bounce off his chest. Gorilla strength is estimated to be about 10 times their body weight. Fully grown silverbacks are actually stronger than 20 adult humans combined. A Silverback gorilla can lift 4,000 lbs. (1,810 kg) on a bench press, while a well-trained man can only lift up to 885 lbs. (401.5 k A person would have no chance whatsoever against a Gorilla.

Chimpanzees are the strongest of all primates, in terms of weight to muscle strength. they are only 30-70% stronger than humans. This is what scientists studying the muscle tissue of primates say. the gorilla has even weaker muscles than the chimpanzee, primarily due to its vegetarian diet. If you put a 200 kg male gorilla and a 200 kg human male powerlifter side by side, there will be very little advantage for gorilla.

Even just looking at their skeleton, there's little competition in terms of strength, and it's ridiculous to state that just the biceps and triceps are stronger in particular. All these points contribute to exponentially higher strength: - higher type IIx muscle fiber ratio - thicker bones with higher density - higher torque on the joints due to point of origin to insertion - higher absolute weight - MUCH higher FFMI (fat free mass index) It's like comparing ourselves to a strictly vegetarian bear. If you truly want to see the difference in strength, take a 350-400 lb power lifter such as Eddie Hall, who is incredibly strong, and see if he can navigate his way through the structures in a gorilla enclosure that are designed to give the gorilla exercise, especially climbing exercise. I have seen videos of silverbacks pulling themselves 20' up a tree with a rope with no more effort than it would take them to walk 20 feet across the ground.

I mean comparing sections of the video to itself invalidate the video. That said, two humans can grab the fenders of a typical car and slide the front or rear end around. Extremely conservative estimate of a gorilla's max strength puts it at five times a human. If my then 5"8/170 lbs self can move a car around in a shop with my 5"8 father on the other side it's pretty fair to say that a gorilla that outweighs me at least twice over can probably flip the car.

I think a misunderstanding about animal strength is the belief that pound for pound their muscles are vastly different than ours, it's better understood in terms of how their skeleton and muscle anchor points provide them with unique mechanical advantages in certain tasks as a result of how those muscles are hung off their frame and how much work their muscles are able to generate in specific motions as a result. Thinking of our bodies as inherently weaker than other animals misses that our evolutionary adaptations are ones that optimizes us for endurance and traveling great distances over ground, not lifting heavy masses or swing from tree to tree.

It's thought that was how humans mainly hunted before the invention of ranged weapons. And there's even tribes still today who uses the same hunting method! They will select a target antilope etc. And then just run after it until it eventually falls over from exhaustion, since most animals are evolved for sprinting and can't keep the speeds up for very long.

If you look at the skeletons of gorillas, you will see reinforced protrusions where tendons, ligaments, and muscles can attach. The crest on their skull acts as an attachment for working their powerful jaws used for chewing more raw food. As our ancestors used tools we could grind food up externally and cook food to soften them up so over time our sagital crests disappeared. With these bone protrusions to anchor muscles they will always be at a strength advantage to humans.

I've read somewhere that gorillas and chimpanzees have different tendon attachment locations which gives them more strength but less accuracy.

We're built for endurance running and complex minute dexterity. This is like saying if a Gorilla can challenge us in a marathon or chess. Silverback would lose.

What we really excel at is analytical thinking, the ability to postulate and answer questions; and yes as well as to endure. It's totally plausible that most domesticated animals became so simply by having a weakness assessed, then simply got ran down and the weakness exploited. Ie you jog down a horse for days, turn it's head down, (their atlas and axis bones are relatively weak), give it water while your buddy hobbles it and throw a lead on it. Bam we got us a horse.

Thanks for your tips. The NEXT time i run across a Silverback Gorilla i definitely won't stare him down. That was a big mistake last time ..... he proceeded to give me one hell of a whacking, and told me to bugger off in a most rude way. Lesson learned.

imagine if silver back gorrillas worked together in large, coordinated army groups, similar to packs of wolves and used martial art like attacks and strikes AND did weight lifting...lol

Years ago the Daily Mail newspaper had an 'answers to correspondents' section, and someone asked the question, how strong is a gorilla? A keeper at London zoo, who looked after Guy the gorilla, answered by quoting the story about moving Guy to a new enclosure. Apparently two keepers both tightened down the huge nuts on the thick steel cage bars with a massive spanner. When Guy entered his new home, after having a good look around, he came upon these huge nuts and easily started to unscrew them. The keepers quickly got Guy into another secure area. That is how powerfully strong gorillas are.

I’m cautious about going up against a being with two fists. A gorilla has four. With the ability to crush any part of the human body to dust or pulp, depending on how it’s feeling that day.

you would literally have to punch teh gorilla to pieces....with foot kicks..our feet are stronger than their arms -..and can break down doors.... you woudl need a large human male though 6g6 and 280lbs and up...with tree trunk legs and long arms....
