While lots of comments may be true, that bruteforce/speed/agility wise, the gray wolf would statistically win against any dog, the fact that those fight would (almost) never happen render the point moot. Wolves are smart before they are strong and agile, and they value their lives more than anything else. They would never take unnecessary risk fighting a large dog, just in order to eat some sheep. All it takes is one bad move after all, one bite and it's over. They would go back to the forest, kill a couple of rabbits and be done with it. And that is the reason why they have survived so long, being cautious.

Bull... there are domestic dog lineages built specifically for combat. Wolves are built for survival, with a healthy balance of fear and self preservation, and conflicting demands pulling them away from combat specialisation. Put them in the pool of domestic dogs and they are somewhere in the middle, fighting wise.

This was one of the best videos in a while. I didn’t realize the bite forces of the dingo and African wild dog were so high. Some are larger than the grey wolf, both in size and bite force. But wouldn’t matter, one-on-one, or packs in equal numbers , none would defeat them. You don’t survive in the Canadian far north with temps at -45 by being second best. While I dont know of any definitive bite force measurement of any of these species. I can tell you a coyote isnt close to 700 psi. They have pretty weak bite force. Sharp, pointy, teeth though. My pitty didn't have 700 psi, but she bit every bit as hard just playing.

Bottom line, there is no wild canid or domestic dogs that can consistently defeat a large northern gray wolf one on one. And only excessively large domestic dogs bred to hunt and fight will have a chance against a full grown northern gray wolf. But only if they are wearing spiked collars. But one on one without spiked collars, I would bet on the northern gray wolf every time.

The distribution map of grey wolves in North America is extremely outdated, I’m talking over 30 years outdated. Grey wolves have made a strong come back on the entire west coast including Washington state, Oregon, California, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and they have spread out further in the Midwest states like Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and the Dakota’s. They have been extremely successful in states like Montana and Idaho which should show a much larger spread. A breeding pair was just confirmed in the state of Maine and packs have been discovered in the New York Adirondacks years ago. 16 more wolves will be released into Colorado in a few weeks.

Before I watch this video and read other comments -- How strong is a wolf compared to other 'canids?' Me-thinks "strong enough": I believe that a wolf has both sharper teeth...and a greater bite force than any other canids (but not a stronger bite force than a hyena which 'technically' I don't believe is a canid), domestic or otherwise. Methinks not much sharper teeth or a greater bite force......but more so, me-thinks, nonetheless. It's very difficult to say. Wolves are the most intelligent when it comes to sociability, cooperativeness and the ability to adapt to animal behavior. Dogs are the best at interpreting commands (and also at identifying human expressions, emotional states, etc., a trait shared with house cats). You've lumped African wolf (Canis lupaster) in with "Jackals", there's been a development in there taxonomy placement. The Golden jackal-wolf (Canis aureus) not really Jackals as they are more related to Grey wolves genus Canis than to African jackals genus Lupulella, being the Black-backed jackal (Lupulella mesomelas) and Side-striped Jackal (Lupulella adusta). You also lumped all Grey wolf (Canis lupus) as being powerful when there are many subspecies and some are small enough that the Dalerwa (Lycaon pictus) would plow through them. With the biggest living Grey wolf subspecies said to be the Northwestern grey wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis), aka in common name as Mackenzie Valley wolf, Alaskan timber wolf, Canadian timber wolf.

We have an unidentified species of wolf here in Australia which is in Aboriginal lore, this species I have seen firsthand over the last 6 and a half years, makes wolves and dogs look like little pups

The dire wolf wasnt even a wolf & therefore couldn’t interbreed. They were more closely related to and looked like the African jackal. Shouldve been named the dire jackal. Dire wolf name is misleading.

Not all domestic dogs live cuddly pampered lives. Id be willing to bet that theres some pits, rots, and others bred for fighting that are definitely capable of killing a wolf.

Not about the size of the dog in the fight, but about the size of the fight in the dog. All but the alpha in a wolf pack are used to being bitten and forced to submit, and a domestic dog would likely consider a fight with a wolf a life or death situation. Quite a number of dog breeds were explicitly bred to protect livestock from wolves. Have you ever seen a rottweiler subdue a bull? Yeah some bulls kill some dogs, but not a good dog. The dog latches onto their nose and the bull doesn't want to fight anymore. You can find cases of dogs killing wolves and the opposite. Silly conversation about bite force when any canine can crush bones. Wolf packs don't stand much of a chance against a dog, because the dog also has a pack and those pack members pick up blades and guns.
