In this video we talk about the other uses of the blackberry plant besides those delicious berries! We also make a syrup made from blackberry roots, leaves and berries to try out as a remedy for upset stomach and digestive issues.
Though this syrup was experimental and there was no actual recipe we would like to provide you with a recipe on making herbal syrups by Mountain Rose Herbs: blog.mountainr...

They grow wild like crazy here in PA zone 6b. What zone are you in? If they grow where you are let me know and maybe I could send you some plants in the future!

How sweet of you! We’re in zone 9b, Central Florida. Yes they grow here and that would super awesome!! But only certain species grow well: Apache, Arapaho, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Ouachita, and Kiowa. Would want you to waste the seeds. 👩🏼‍🌾

@@thathomesteadfamily5200 Oh okay gotcha! Yeah I am not so sure how wild ones native to our climate would do there! Well maybe in the future there will be some plants or seeds we can send your way that would do well. I am loving this youtube homesteading community and would love to share.

Good to know. Thank you so much! Is there a book you recommend to gain more knowledge on forging?

I’m planning on doing a book recommendation video in the future but I always recommend a good field guide specific to your region. I’ve used Peterson’s field guide for edible wild plants in North East and Central U.S. since I started. It’s very helpful to have a field guide like this in the beginning for learning identification and the main uses for each plant.

Awesome information thank you for your time and efforts. If I might ask do you or any of your viewers have any wildcrafting type books that you could recommend? Please and thank you.

First off I love the name "the tube of you" haha. Made me giggle. So I would definitely recommend a field guide to wild edible plants for your region. I use the Peterson's field guide for North and Central America. This is helpful for identifying many common edible plants and lists some ways to prepare them. One book I recently came across that I really enjoy is called "All good things around us." I don't think it is still being printed but they do sell it used online. I will have to look through my books over the next few days and get back to you with more!

@@SmallSeeds Thank you so much. I look forward to getting one of these books and would certainly appreciate any other suggestions. I hope your channel grows and you are able to share this wonderful information with many others. So if there is anything I can do to help with your channels growth, I would be happy to do so. Like share and comment ect. The algos like that short of stuff. And I don't think it will hurt your credibility if you ask your viewers to like and share your work, it deserves recognition. P s. I have been debating changing it to, In the tube but not of the tube. Lol Thanks again for your time and I look forward for more videos.

@@InTheTubeNotOfTheTube Wow, thank you so much! I really appreciate that. If there are any videos that you really like feel free to share them! Liking, commenting and sharing always helps so thank you. To be honest I just feel strange asking people to do so and just figured if people really want to they will. Maybe it's not the right way to go about it with a small channel but I just want to keep it real lol. So I found another good book while looking through my collection called "Edible Wild Plants: Wild foods from dirt to plate" May be another one to look into. I know there are many other great ones out there too! These were just some that I have.

@@SmallSeeds Thank you so very much for the book recommendation. I totally get it, your authenticity is very apparent. There's no need to change the things you're doing. You're correct those that get value from your work will undoubtedly also want to share their experience. Thanks again, have a wonderful summer.

@@SmallSeeds Sorry to bother you again. I've looked up those book recommendations that you've made. And I could find all three of them on Amazon for around 25 dollars. Not my favorite place to spend money, unfortunately we must sometimes do some things we dislike to get to a better place. So with that said would you recommend one of them over the others as being the most beneficial long term? To me they all seem very interesting. Thank you again. Oh' do you have an Amazon account where when people purchase things that you use or recommend you get paid? If not you should look into that maybe? I personally prefer to purchase things that way when I'm using Amazon, it gives back to someone like yourself instead of all the profits going to them. Again sorry and thank you for taking time out to answer my questions.

So I really was just experimenting with this one but I will try my best to give you a recipe. First I made a decoction from the roots and berries. Everything was washed well before I started and I had about a 1/2 cup of chopped roots and a cup of fresh berries. If I were to make it again I would probably add less berries because the pectin in them made the consistency a lot thicker than I wanted. I simmered these ingredients with 2 cups of water for about 30 minutes to make the decoction, strained it and then steeped about a 1/2 cup of chopped blackberry leaves (you could probably add more than that) within the decoction for another 30 minutes. Strained it again, then I simmered it more reducing it down to about a cup of liquid (which is optional) then added equal parts honey. You don't have to add that much if it seems too sweet for your liking. However the honey does help to balance out the astringency a bit and will prolong the shelf life. I am sorry I cannot provide you with a better recipe! Like I said in the video I was winging it haha. It did go really well with a cup of green tea. I will do my best in future videos to provide more detailed and accurate recipes. Hope this helps!
