Thanks for the kind words John. I think the simple answer to your question is the KZbin algorithm. Unlike the more popular channels, I don't publish videos every week. It seems this makes a big difference to visibility. But yes, it would be nice to be able to show these videos to a wider audience. Thanks for your support. It's much appreciated.

Besides Paul Kirtley's already answered I think he didn't monetize his channel because I haven't noticed any breaking in advertisement. And youtube (Google) likes to make money from AdWords or youtube monetized channels. So, based on this particularly level of algorithm, youtube will not put this channel on the top of the list by keyword search, or on the recommended clips suggestions. And indeed, this channel deserves a lot more subscribers.
@PaulKirtley5 жыл бұрын
@@citizenx1602 Thanks for your positive words too. My channel is monetised but I don't stick ads in the middle of videos. I really don't like it when I watch videos and I try to avoid it on mine. Beginning and end is OK though, I think.

My opinion only, the Bushcraft community has exploded in the UK over the last few years and Paul and Ray have actually spoken very poorly about people that have posted on youtube which is not good. Perhaps those people aren't doing things "quite right" but the masses just like to see what real life people get up to and actually learn more from their failings and kit reviews. Paul Kirtley missed the boat in terms of youtube and is trying to catch up but thanks for your postings. 46k subscribers for Paul is great, funky prepper has 55k subscribers and hardly posts any videos - go figure ?? - is it that funkys content is more aligned to the bushcraft community explosion ??

On my experience nothing beats a multi day trip in a canoe, the changing vistas, the calming rhythm of paddling and the soulful call of the Loon. The un-interrupted evening routine of fire lighting and cooking food in that timeless way, the womblike comfort of the tent and journey to well deserved and satisfying sleep with dreams of adventure yet to come. Great job Paul.

Paul, I've just stumbled across part 1 of Berens River bushcraft camping trip and seems that the timing of my intro to your gifts to your viewers could not have been better. I am on a bit of a difficult path which I MUST put myself through if I intend to survive. I have spent a lot of time in the wilderness, realize it is my best hope for success and needed it represented in a quiet, intelligent, and respectful manner in order to truly remember and get back to the wander that awaits my reawakening. Excuse my vagueness, but please accept my heartfelt appreciation for your inspiration. You will be a solid link to my success. That much I can easily glean from this introduction to you. Hey Tom, it's good to hear from you chap. I'm glad you have enjoyed what you've seen so far. I'm pleased you also appreciate the additional effort to film a trip such as this. I can't say I always got it right - too much wind noise and shaky camera in places, as well as the battery dying in a few places that proved inconvenient timing. It's good you appreciate the effort though and I think I do just about manage to convey the spirit of the land I was travelling through, as well as my thought processes around my decisions on the move (you'll see more of the latter in episode 2). I hope all is going well for you. From here it seems you are going from strength to strength. I'm a big admirer of your diligence and work ethic Tom. Keep it up. Warm regards, Paul.

I find it funny watching canoeing video's like this because where i live all the water ways are full of saltwater crocs and you would be mad to do this. If I'm lucky enough to do this one day it would take me a few days to relax I think. I can't understand why people don't take there rubbish with them, i can understand we miss stuff every now and then but sometimes it is clearly deliberate. Love watching your videos Paul, thanks for sharing.
@PaulKirtley5 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin, it's good to hear from you. Understood re the saltwater crocs. There are things I do all the time at home in the UK but would not do in bear country. I get into good bear country habits in Canada then when I get home I literally flinch when others do things I've just trained myself out of. It does take a few days to adjust. Similarly, when in Australia, even in suburban areas in the south, you have to break some habits that don't matter in the UK or Europe. I don't get the deliberate leaving of large quantities of trash either. Anyway, I'm glad you feel the same way. Thanks for your kind words about my vids and I hope you enjoy the next instalment. @@PaulKirtley Thanks Paul, we've watched and learn't a lot from your Spey video's, which is something we're keen to try. Only problem is we have an inflatable canoe so not sure if it's a dangerous idea or not. It's a pretty robust unit as far as they go but will do a little more research on the route before we decide anything. Failing that we will look at trying to find ajoining loch's suitable for a multi day trip. Thanks for the reply, appreciate your time :)

@@GarethZoeWildcamps The inflatable canoe will be safer for you on a river than a big loch. But either way, get good buoyancy aids and wear them all the time. Take a ditch kit of spare warm clothes in a dry bag (it is Scotland after all). If you can, get on a white water safety and rescue course. Hope you enjoyed your Canadian trip. I grew up in N.E. Saskatchewan around the big northern lakes and rivers. It is beautiful, isn’t it. Looks like you landed at a fishing camp that is re-used each year. It is ideal for net fishing. There is no possible excuse for the condition it was left in. Just goes to show that bad behaviour can be exposed to the world no matter how remotely it is hidden.

It is fantastic. I've not been to northern Saskatchewan yet but am planning on undertaking the Porcupine River in 2020. Looking forward to seeing the land of the little sticks....
@dhayes15415 жыл бұрын
Paul Kirtley you will want to add mosquito control to your kit. The bugs are not always terrible but there is a lot of water in the north which can breed some pretty big clouds of hungry mosquitoes at times. When the trees all get short, “little sticks”, I find myself looking for a rock or hill because it seems like you can almost see over the vegetation...if only you were a foot taller. It is a strange sensation. Will be an interesting trip.

Thanks for your positive words Dave. As always, it's good to hear from you and I'm happy you enjoyed this vid. I'm glad you are learning from my experiences and comments too. Hi Paul, thank you for taking the extra effort to film and produce what is clearly going to be an informative, and inspirational record of your solo trip. Superb first episode, and I love the fact that you include a lot of clear detail - visually and verbally: great reminders and pointers on the multiple aspects and considerations of the expedition. Looking forward to the next instalment. Happy new year and see you in the woods in 2020.

Hey Neil! It's good to hear from you. I'm glad you found the video entertaining as well as technically useful. There's definitely more where this came from in episode 2, which will be released on January 2. Looking forward to catching up with you in 2020. Have a great start to the year! All the best, Paul

Thank you. Yes, it was a good start to the trip, despite the garbage. And to be fair, had the garbage island not been messy, I might not have ended up camping where I did. It was a far superior spot scenically, even if the first island had been clear of rubbish. Warm regards, Paul

Great video! Too bad about the garbage site. It could be a mess left by outfitters but more probably it was a 'party' site from one of the northern communities. Both Little Grand Rapids and Pauingassi are 'dry' community meaning that no alcohol is allowed. It has been my experience that dry communities often have an established site (usually within a day's travel by motor boat) where folks can congregate outside the community to have an overnight or multi-day party. It is an unfortunate reality of the north. Good on you for showing it, many would have omitted that segment to show a more pristine trip.
@PaulKirtley5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin. I'm glad you liked the video. As I said in the video I have seen this type of thing before but I didn't want to jump to conclusions. Your comments align with what I have experienced too. It's good you appreciated me showing the trip, warts and all. Cheers, Paul
