I wanted to comment on your cutting board height to counter top issue. I would suggest rubber bumpers on the four corners. It will also help securing the cutting board while using it on the counter.

Or find some scrap wood or countertop to cut long pieces at the height you need, to raise it, and protect the edges from water splash.

Considering I know NOTHING about building cabinetry, I think you two have done a great job! Lots of adjusting and figuring things out along the way…thank goodness you work well so together. 👏👏👏

In the future, you should have put the edge lament of first and router trimmed it. Then put the top on a router trimmed it. This would make the top cover the side edge and block water from ever getting between the edge and the top. It also reduces the chance of chipping the top of the edge when you drop a pan on the counter.❤
@Gunner5215 күн бұрын
When laminating a countertop, you should put the small side pieces on before the top laminate. That way, the top will hide the seam on the side pieces.

Craig, you’ve got a keeper in that woman! She’s almost as good as you at the finish work! Great video we are really enjoying watching this transformation!😊

To bring that cutting board level with your counter I’d recommend a few peel and stick rubber pieces under your cutting board to rest on the sink. And as a added bonus it makes the cutting board non slip

Pointer for your next laminate job. Install all of your edge banding first and router edges flush. Then install the top sheet of laminate. The reasoning behind it is this, say you drag something off of the counter it tends to pull on the edges or chip the edges. If the laminate top is overlapping your edge banding you have negated this from happening. I understand it’s your first go round and you’re doing great. Just trying to pass on what I’ve learned. Another tip is to install dowel rod on the glued mdf then you can line up your laminate on all edges then pull out your dowel rod one by one as you adhere the laminate to the mdf. This way you’re under control when bonding the two materials together. It would keep you from having that oops moment that you ran into when you yelled for help😂😂😂.very fun to watch!!!!
@wildrvlife3 күн бұрын
such good tips, thank you! We'll have to give that a try next time! We're definitely still learning, and I did not expect that instant glue moment I had 😂😂 I cracked up at myself watching that footage back

Pretty good for a first cabinet. If you build another, make the face frame out of solid wood, cut into the proper pieces to pocket hole together, and pocket hole to the cabinet carcass. Plywood edges of the carcass will be hidden and the face frame edges will look nice. Also, if you ever need to access items within that space, you can unscrew pocket screws for each cross piece to have a larger hole to reach into and work on items within that space.

I didn't watch the episode yet, but I've watched the previous episodes. I like your attitude. Do a bit of research. Go for it. Learn from your mistakes. Sure it may not be perfect, but it will be WAY better than it was and you have the satisfaction of making it YOUR RV. I like how previously you mentioned that this is "not a how to" video, rather it's a "how we did it" video. Thanks for sharing. It's fun watching you squirm through the build, but you keep pushing forward.

If you have more drawers to mount there are mounting kits so everything is at proper angle and square. I learned the hard way. Keep on trucking ✌

Counter tops should always be made with 3/4 inch plywood on all surfaces that could get wet. A second thin strip is added to the outside edge that would give you a faux 1.5" thickness on the outside edge. You then laminate the top and front edge of the countertop to give a finished look. It will never swell if water does leak by and last forever - I did the two counter tops in our home bathrooms 20 years ago and to date - No issues. I used 3/4 in plywood for the 3" counter backsplash as well. Otherwise it looks great!

It’s coming together! 👏 The laminate pattern is spot on! I remember that pattern quite well! Most folks had that in white, rust or red coloring. Use metal trim and you will have a 1970’s table!

You guys just amaze me as you tackle all facets of cabinetry. Pat yourselves on the back. You did great for first-timers. 😊 I do prefer, though, 3/4 inch material for sides/fronts on frameless cabinets. But, hey, you are keeping costs down as much as possible.

Take some clear nail polish and paint it on ALL the edges of the countertop. Especially the sink area. It will keep any water from penetrating. I did this on my class C and it worked great. You don't see it if you only lightly brush the edges. .

While I am enjoying the project I hate to point out the mistake that no one would ever put an under mount sink on a laminate countertop. While I did see the extra waterproofing effort I still give it a year maybe before the water seeps in and the countertop starts expanding and falling apart around the rim of that sink. Under mount sinks should only be used on solid surface countertops.

I agree wholeheartedly!!! I’ve been doing reno’s with my husband for 40 years and we have never done that. Undermounts are meant for solid surface counters only. You are scaring me! I want so bad for this to turn out for you! Also it is not a common thing for MDF to be used for any type of countertop with a sink or water source. First leak in the sink or the window and you will have to replace it because it just disintegrate.
@crashweekly79254 күн бұрын
This is where they learn by their mistakes, I see a lot of decisions they make that probably shouldn't have been done but they did it anyways. This is what happens when you get 2 people who really need a master class in DIY before attempting a build like this, they will definitely be masters at redoing counter tops within 6 months of water saturating that MDF.
@Murminator6605 күн бұрын
When I built countertops I doubled up the overhang so the reveal strip look thicker then it hides the gap where the box meets the top then from the inside you can screw the box into the counter edge to hold it down.

For projects like this, McMaster Carr is your friend. Shipping isn't free, but they have everything needed in pretty much any size you could want. They cater to manufacturing facilities but we ordered from them all the time for our van build. I also suggest finding a way to make a toe kick. Just cut out three inches of the bottom but leave enough on the sides for support. Thanks for the video!
