Had a Pedders GVM upgrade on our 200 series last month, drives great towed our 3.1t van 2500kms no issues, the price we paid included them taking it over the pits. Some advice if you have anything illegal like tint too dark you have to take it off as they don’t just check the suspension they go over the whole car, we had to take our tint off, but pedders were great.

Remember to remove as much weight as possible before you go over the weigh bridge after getting a GVM upgrade as this will become your new Tare weight, the tare weight is used to calculate the rego cost in WA. I did not know this and had my fully loaded canopy/RTT on the D-max when I got a Pedders GVM upgrade. Once I took all the weight of the D-Max I had to get it weighed and inspected again.

Hey Cam, It's essential you cover off on GCM when you talk GVM upgrades! A GVM upgrade is a tradeoff with what a vehicle can legally tow. With your GVM now 3550, you can only legally tow a van weighing 2400kg. GCM 5950 - GVM 3550 = 2400kg. It's imperative your subscribers know this.... Keep up the good work👍
@WildTouring3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Jason, Appreciate your angle. Like I said in the video, going to go into more detail on all the nitty gritty details soon! But to address your comment for the benefit of other subscribers, It all deserves a proper thorough explanation or people may not fully understand! For instance, this is the second comment on this video that implies a GVM upgrade reduces towing capacity - which is not entirely accurate. Simply fitting a GVM upgrade does not reduce tow capacity. Using my vehicle as reference -the tow capacity remains at 3500kg, and the GCM remains at 5950kg. I can still tow 3500kg, but to do so id have to reduce my payload to 2450kg. Same as a stock Dmax cannot tow 3500kg if its loaded to its max GVM of 2950kg. But again, with a reduction of payload to 2450kg it can. And then there's more to this equation that needs to be addressed such as; - The shift of ball weight from trailer to vehicle - Max axle loads
@jasonfothergill18263 жыл бұрын
Yeah, look forward to the video. I only comment due to the shear volume of travellers out there overweight. The more qualiy info regarding weight we can get out there the better👌

@graememellor83193 жыл бұрын
Another good video mate BUT ! You fail to mention the max axle loading which is often forgotten, this will and does lead to failures further along the drive train due to transferred loadings being excessive, GVM increase is all good and well but the bigger picture must be taken into account.... Plus the "Federal Government Approved" tag on the pedders ad doesn't hold much weight either, as all the states have different rules regarding modifications, some make it almost impossible to legally upgrade GVM without a formal engineering inspection and certification being done at a cost of thousands.
@WildTouring3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Graeme, I havnt forgotten to mention axle load ratings, like I said towards the end - I’ll do a seperate video where I weigh my car and van and use it as an example to define/explain relevance of Tare, GVM, GCM, max axle weight ratings, payload, tow ball weight, ATM and GTM. And as for the federal compliance of this kit. There’s always a lot of confusion around this topic, and I think I know why. If it’s fitted to a brand new vehicle pre rego it would get a compliance plate and can be registered in any state in the country without a mod plate or specific inspection of the upgrade. Post rego, like mine, it’s inspected locally (that’s the Formal engineering inspection I think you’re referring to, it’s less than $200 and takes half an hour on a pre approved kit like this) and is mod plated for registration in the state of inspection/registration. While it remains registered in that state, it’s legal (and covered by insurance) to load it right up to the new increased GVM and drive in any state. The only issue with a post rego upgrade is if i was to relocate to another state, or sell it interstate. It would have to be inspected and mod plated in that state for registration. The ‘federal compliance’ means it meets the requirements of every state, so it’s a bit more running around and another expense I guess, but it’s no real drama!

How can Pedders , or any other suspension supplier , legally increase the factory gvm without increasing/upgrading/re-engineering the vehicles axles , chassis and brakes? Does Pedders put in writing that all oem guarantees are still in place after a "gvm upgrade"?? 9:04 10:02

Which Hilux variant model are you using in this example? I found this on the cars sales pages, The standard 1945kg kerb weight increases to 2253kg with the full-steel tray which weighs a hefty 308kg. Therefore, the standard 1105kg payload rating has to be reduced by the same amount to avoid exceeding the 3050kg GVM, which leaves a lower peak payload of 797kg.1 Jan 2021.

Does the GVM upgrade cover the manufacturers warranty with regards to their stated GVM and will you be covered by both the manufacturers warranty and will your insurance company cover you as well, if the chassis is bent, or the drive train fails due to overloading from the manufacturers specification, does the ADR cover your manufacturers warranty. Just playing the devils advocate, I'm not sure about these things, hope you can enlighten me on these issues. Kindest Regards.

Do you really think installing some bigger shocks and springs is going to magically increase the strength of your chassis, drive train, gear box, diffs, 4x4 transfer case, wheels, CVs, brakes etc..? Manufactures specifications are there for a reason. It's pretty simple, if you need a GVM upgrade you have bought the wrong vehicle.

Hi Cam, ok vid but should have mentioned how upping the tow vehicle GVM reduces the Gross Combination Mass, GCM, or simply put the weight you can tow. Manufacturer puts a GCM limit on the vehicle. Let's say 6800kg all up. 3300kg for tow vehicle, 3500kg tow limit. Up tow vehicle 500kg to 3800kg, means legally, when at 3800kg, you can only tow 3000kg. Can get GCM upgrade, nowhere as easy as GVM and exxy. Also, if overweight and in an fatal accident, if cops can prove overweight, that means braking/handling performance was compromised and you could be up for culpable driving. Ignorance of overweight is no excuse in court. Tow company driver in Alice Springs told me of a cruiser and van ran off dirt track and hit a rock, buggering all the wheels on one side of car and van. Insurance co asked if he could weigh vehicles during recovery, yes. Weighed truck and car, weigh empty truck. Same again for van. Overweight, unroadworthy vehicle, no insurance for $140,000 worth of van and car. Bloke even had to pay own tow. Bit long, but GVM and GCM should taken very seriously,
@WildTouring3 жыл бұрын
Gday Colin. Like I said in the video I’m going to do a seperate video on explaining what TARE GVM, payload, GCM, Axle load limits, ATM, GTM, tow ball weight is, and how they interrelate. Including but not limited to your comment regarding how tow capacity CAN decrease when GVM increases. This isn’t only applicable to GVM upgraded cars anyway. There is MANY vehicles that cannot tow their max stated tow capacity at factory GVM because of GCM limitations. For example from factory my Dmax has a GVM of 3t, 3.5t towing but only 6t GCM. Totally agree regarding liability of being overweight in the event of an accident. Which is why I’m posting these videos encouraging awareness of legalities and will demonstrate how to weight your rig and understand the weigh bridge certificate.

By my calculations, that leaves me with around 30mm for suspension lift. The question I have is the Pedders looks like it has lifted your DMAX some more - may I ask how much and is the total lift (tyres + susp.) of the vehicle still legal - did this come up in the inspections at all?
