We finally found the perfect quartzite countertop for our rustic/zen feeling bathroom and were so excited to get it installed on the vanity Josh just built. I can't really explain how shocked and saddened we were when to find the countertop was destroyed when we went to bring it into the bathroom. Buying another countertop is not an option so now the question is.... Can we somehow magically repair this one??
We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while we building our own off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

Some really stupid and uneducated comments about stain removal on natural stone. That is not quartzite either. It may have some bands of quartzite but it's primarily dolomitic marble and will etch. Absolutely do not use bleach, magic eraser(abrasive), or goo gone. A mixture of poultice powder (511 makes a good one) and acetone is what I would use. Cover and let dry then scrape off with plastic putty knife. It will take several applications.

Josh, you're gonna want to replace that flex "P" trap with a straight piece of PVC, first of all they don't meet code and they will catch every piece of hair and anything else you can imagine because of all the little pieces of plastic flash that were not able to be removed in the molding process. Looks great guys!

Try researching a stone poultice, you mix a solvent with flour and tape it off with plastic over top and as the flour dries the solvent pulls the stains out. It's the same way you can get oil stains out of stone. The solvent has to work on the stain type. There are varying degrees of aggressiveness with the solvent.

Kids love to customize our homes, mostly by accident. Worst case scenario in twenty years a little stain can spark the memory of how joyful this week was with the kids. Perfection is something we all want in our home, it may already be there.

Hi Josh, Erin, and family... I starting watching your channel at about the time you were digging the holes for the structural building supports. I spent most of my life as a home builder and I grew up on a beautiful farm in Iowa... so it was just really interesting for me to watch. I never subscribed until today... sorry. I want to tell you that you have built a beautiful home... But more than anything else, you have built a beautiful family, and that's what matters most. I started watching for the build... but now, I simply admire the love that your family shares. My prayers are always with you, and may God's blessings be on you all. Mark VanWeelden

I stained a whole 4,000 sq foot shop with copper sulfate and let it sit to soak in over a weekend. Beautiful aqua color. Really perfect. Never thinking that the Amish kids around me who never get to use their skates would descend in droves on this huge flat rink and leave tire tread marks all over it!! After a short period of agony, I said to myself “Self, you now have a permanent record of all the young people you love in your floor”. And it actually looks great. Totally unique like some huge abstract art piece. People have stopped by to ask how we did it. Maybe the fix is to give all your kids some markers and say “have at it”. (Just kidding- i hope the mfg can help). I ❤️ you all!!

Hi Erin & Josh, I have worked with marble for many years. I know you can lift wine stains off marble. I'm not sure about ink. You could try this idea of your first one doesn't work. If you can get what we in Ireland call alibaster also called plaster. It's for making moulds like statues or ceiling mouldings. You put the plaster on the marble where the stain is, build it up around the edges like a birds nest. Pour water in and let the stain soak into the plaster. Leave it for a few hours then scrape the plaster away with a piece of wood. It won't scratch the marble. Hope you get it sorted. Love your two KZbin channels. All the best from Ireland. Michael.

The vanity looks great. I love the fact that Josh could turn the 2 negatives (no fittings, PVC cement gone bad) into a positive, even jokingly, and that Erin could laugh at it, too. It shows your indomitable spirit. I'm thinking you need a cover story in case the stain doesn't all come out. This Etruscan marble was quarried from beneath the site of a famous ancient battle between Etruria and Rome. Analysis has shown that the stain was from the armor of a defeated Etruscan. Corrosion from weathering seeped through the battle-churned soil, staining the underlying stone. The Smithsonian Museum has asked for the right of first refusal in the event you no longer want it. It could pay for Ellie's college, but you think it ties you to ancient humanity and simultaneously symbolizes the blood, sweat, and tears you have poured into making this home for your family.

Rubbing alcohol soak. Soak a pad of white paper towels, white terry cloth, or wash rags with the rubbing alcohol. Place over the stained area. Try to rub the stain out first. If the residual is still in the pores of the surface, weigh the saturated pad with a pot of hot water. Remove the pad and replace with another saturated towel or paper towel until the stain is lifted. I am a retired art teacher and this technique saved many walls and tables in my past. I hope this helps restore the surface. Best of luck.

Warm up the counter top surface with a blow dryer to open up the pores. Spray the stained area with WD-40. Let stand for a while to let it permeate. Wipe off the excess WD-40 and sprinkle the affected ares with baking soda, replacing it often with new to continuing soaking out the WD-40. It may take a few times but it will eventually wick out all the marker and cleaner.

Also he was stretching it to reach the pipe extension above. Never do that as it will want to return to original form thus slipping off the pipe above. Get a longer extender for the piece above. Other than that good job. When I did such for a living, we always put the faucets and drain in the countertop drain lift rod and all with it on saw horses to make it easy and then lift the top into place with it all attached. Leaving the lower connections for the tight places. Just made it easier. Tricks of the trade. Did not have to reach up between the bowl and the wall that way.

@@ChildOfGod0777 Yes. If Alcohol dosn't work, try cleaning solvent (bencine) - at last acetone. But before using acetone - try it at an unseen place. I'm a little bit out of ideas: I can understand that marble may soak some liquids. BUT - a countertop marble should be treated in some way (oil?) that it is no more hydroscopic.

Could the company grind it down? I am so glad you did not blame the kids, crap happens and taking responsibility for your part in the problem shows great maturity. Thank you sharing and may you have a better day. Chucky is in supervisor mode. :) Love you guys and wishing all the best.

Live and learn! I had to put new sinks in my two bath rooms. The first one I did like they did, the second I put together before I set into the vanity I built. The second way was a lot easier and quicker especially since bath room vanities are usually very cramp areas unlike kitchen s

I hope all goes well with the countertop, the only thing I can suggest is acetone on a paper towel. Little bits at a time. Everything looks really good, I love the black faucet, brings great contrast with the countertop.

For permanent marker, pour rubbing alcohol on the stain and let it sit for a couple hours, then wash area with distilled water. Repeat if needed.

Not saying it won't work but its a porous material so that stain goes deep into the counter. Guessing thats why they used baking soda to help absorb/soak up the marker.

You can use the baking soda/hydrogen peroxide paste for stains on your clothes. I have used it for years & works great, never buy commercial stain removers. I hope it works on your vanity top (positive thoughts your way!) Aloha!
