As a person who has slaughtered, butchered and eaten animals I feel I also have a unique perspective here. I really love how you taught your kids the truth about what goes on for your farm animals. The boys really expressed a great attitude about it, but honest also. It's good to know that you all will be taken care of by the animals that you take care of. Good luck on getting into the house as soon as possible.

It's hard to not get attached to animals when you take care of them, feed them and love them, but still know that they are being raised for food and we are thankful for them. So glad you decided to take them to the butcher alive. We use to do that with cows for beef. No way did I want to see it either. Hugs to your younger son he was so darling and strong. Even for adults it is sometimes difficult to slaughter your own animals. I think it really puts into perspective the whole where you food comes from process. There is huge difference in respect as compared to someone who thinks meat comes on little plastic trays. And then throw out a freezer full, because it was freezer burnt. Even the processing plants will waste a million pounds of meat and think nothing of it. Because they contaminated it, by touching it. No one cares about the 1,000s of animals that lived and died so a corporation can make products fast and cheap.

This episode brings back lots of memories about the time when I was a kid and my father used to raise pigs. I used to feed them most of the time and they became sort of pets. We would raise 2 pigs each year and they even had names. I knew they were meant to provide us meat for the winter and I also knew there was no other way. We used to have lots of chickens too and my father taught me how to slaughter them, pluck the feathers and butcher them. It all may seem cruel to some, but that's just the way life is. I like that you preserve an old natural way of getting food and that you teach your children the basics of surviving and thriving through hard labour.

I'm Buddhist, as we believe there are two functions in life to procreate or sustain other life. So a plant sustains life as well as a pig. There is no difference, for both we are taking life. This is the function to sustain others. I love that you try to eliminate the stress and that death is part of life that you don't shield the children from. I do believe fear, etc transfers to the meat. Keep going with all your compassion and openness. Love authentic people with heart.

Unnecessary killing and exploitation of other species. Breeding animals for the purpose of exploiting them. Morals stooped in ancient times does not justify commodifying others in today's society. The Buddhist would do well to adapt to the changing times. Dairy is also exploitation and is unnecessary. Veganism is the way to live that is most representative of Buddhist principles.

Reality calls for more realistic discussions. And no btw, I won't be "going without" meat simply because I live in an urban area of more than 3.5 million people that doesn't have neighborhood farms and ranches. Florida is a cow-calf state. The primary cattle “crop” is calves which are shipped to other states to be finished and processed into beef. Florida’s dairies supply milk and dairy products which are mostly consumed in-state, creating cash receipts in excess of $400 million. Florida is home to over 100,000 dairy cows which produce over 2 billion pounds of raw milk annually. We do go to "U-pick" farms for tomatoes/strawberries/corn as those ARE grown locally. Josh and Erin, I'm not very close to WV anymore...can you guys hug your kids for me? This is one precious video...you baby girl with the baby sheep & baby goat....that was just beautiful. And, your younger son working out the emotions of sadness and gratitude with the knowledge of a job well done. He's well on his way to avoiding the errors of sentimentality on the one hand, and callousness on the other. And your oldest helping on the building of the critter-hauler (and his own dealings with sadness/gratitude). Your children are just precious. Which brings me to you two wonderful young people! Your children didn't sprout out of the ground like this. I guess if you put so much compassion and care into raising livestock, it's no surprise you've invested so much (and so well) in your children. I noticed you dispense with the usual banter and poking of each other. Wasn't the day for it, was it? Nope. You guys have the smarts to know when to lay off the jabs...which means in about a week, you two will be putting in overtime on the little Debbie, and other such jokes. Give each other a hug from me as well. I can't tell you how glad I am to have run across your videos.

Baby goats are cuter, but I'm biased, being a goat farmer.

Great video, love the whole family involvement in maintaining your farm. Hard reality that some livestock have leave for you to feed your family, but the reality of being farmers and self sufficient. Great learning experience for kids and those following your channel - love the content, keep it up.

Butchers sometimes take a small “cut” of the meat for themselves which is hard to prove, but it reinforces that it is best to butcher them yourselves once you have the time.

I was thinking the same thoughts but I live in Chicagoland area and everyone has their hands in your pocket in this area. You think in small town America this wouldn't happen but my gut tells me like you said they will take a small cut.

As a city boy raised in Los Angeles I am so impressed with both of you and the entire family.. this episode really hit home with what it means when we say farm to table ! We as city folk have no idea of the bonds that farmers and there families make with there livestock. It touched my hart when you talked with your boys about bringing the pigs to the butcher so that you would have food on the table from the efforts of raising and loving these animals , understanding that to do this the pigs they had raised and loved lives would be taken .This lesson is not just a lesson for your family but for all of us.. and you did this beautifully.

I enjoyed this video very much. Growing up in a city in the North, I realize now, just how much of life I missed. You guys brought so much love and understanding that you just don't learn anywhere but by doing. You are two lovely people and you have taught your children well, it's so nice to see the little one helping, she is so precious. God Bless y'all.

I love the babies too, and so cute. The pig crate for hauling the pigs was well thought out. Good job. I love the way you get the children involved. Have a great day.

I grew up on a small horse ranch and we were self sufficient cows. Chickens rabbits and geese and sheep. What a mad house it was but yet we could have not traded for anything. One reason I like watching your adventures brings back good memories. Keep it up and thanks

You are so right in what you are doing. The meat you have will be way better when you can do the whole process yourselves. People don't realize how adrenaline taints meat. You are doing a wonderful thing for your family. Good luck. 🇮🇪🍀

I've spent the last 3 weeks watching from the beginning. I'm on the "Sheathing 20 Feet In The Air" episode, and it occurs to me that what I'm witnessing is one of the most inspirational things I've ever seen. You're touching lives with your commitment to your goals, your love for each other and those beautiful kiddos, and the light you shine on the path forward for everyone who's willing to take on the challenge of building something meaningful and worthwhile.

I really appreciate your attitude about a humane, thoughtful approach to raising livestock for family consumption. I wish all of us who eat meat could have better control of how the animals we eat are treated during their lives. Your kids are great, by the way!

You guys are doing a super job with your children. Their compassion for the animals, and yet their understanding that this is all part of raising meat animals, shows how well you have taught them!
