One thing I didn't see mentioned is cleaning the cam chain oil metering hole. You can see the oil gallery bolt at 23:30; it's left of the camshaft bore. There is an approximately 0.040 hole in the center of that bolt; it needs to be removed and cleaned or the new chain will be toast in short order.

For some odd reason, in my small town in GA, in the 1970s, Oldsmobile seemed to be everywhere. Friend had a real 70 pace car. Another had a 71 W-30 455 hard top, both of these had the Hurst Dual gate shifter. Knew a guy who had a 74 Hurst Olds. And my senior year, 81, there were 2 of these 76s owned by classmates. One with the 455, special order, in black with gold accents and another in the white with red accents with the rocket 350. My girlfriend drove a 77 black Cutlas Supreme, black interior and T tops. 350 rocket. These later cars were not high performance, but rode very well. Love to have a 76 442. Would bring back a lot of memories. I had a Gold 73 Riviera, GS, Stage1.

Man, I love watching you blokes on road trips in an old car! Looking forward to seeing the Impala one next week, although I think that (sadly) the last 15 mins of THIS week's video is a spoiler alert as to how the Impala video ends... Love the sound of that cam, mate. She's got just the right lope for idling along in traffic, bringing siles to people's faces too. By the way - did your fuel economy get better or worse with the eighth plug lead connected again? They don't have Summit Racing stores down here in New Zealand, but I wish they did! I could spend a whole day there looking things over and a whole other mortgage getting stuff to use "on a project some day". Dangerous places for blokes like us. Is there a government health warning on the door as you go into the place? "Warning: Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to the contents of this shop may empty your bank account". In my case, I'd probably end up talking a lot higher too.... All the best and thanks for the laughs!

This brings back so many memories! My very first car was a '77 Cutlass S with that same body and long roofline with the short trunk lid. The biggest difference in appearance is that mine didn't have that beveled front clip, and was not 4-4-2 badged. It had the horrible 260 ci V8 that was a total dog. It finally gave up the ghost around 90k miles, so we dropped a junkyard '72 Rocket 350 into it. That car was a one-wheel--peel monster, and really moved stoplight to stoplight with the short gear ratio intended for the 260 dog. Topped out around 80 mph though. :)
@dinos0429 Жыл бұрын
I mean, this car has the potential to be one badass cruiser. If you wanna swap V8s, a 403 Olds would bolt right in. It's already an extra 53 cubic inches. You already have an intake, exhaust, headers, and cam for it. The 350 heads with larger valves and maybe a little bit of porting would give it some good compression and breathing. A 2004R trans for some easy BOP compatible mechanical overdrive and something like 3.42 posi in the back with a 403 would make for one hell of a car.
@jeffrobodine8579 Жыл бұрын
If you are going to swap motors might as well just get a 455 instead of a 403. The 403 is a siamese fused small block that is not built as well for higher RPM's like the 455.
@dinos0429 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but this wouldn't be a super high RPM car anyways, it'd be a fun, reliable street car. A 403 Olds can be bought running for like 200 bucks. They're cheap and plentiful. Meanwhile, one of Kevin's last times obtaining a 455 Olds involved gutting an RV. The 455 also has a taller deck height, and would require new headers, new intake, pushrods, etc.. Why not just go with the cheaper, easier option and just bolt on another 53 cubic inches?
@gabesgarden57 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffrobodine8579 455s don't like high rpm for extended periods, you could spin a rod or main bearing because of the bearing sizes.

Ifnyou dont know yet, check out the Schwartz performance '73 442 for inspiration. I almost bought a blue/white/white guts car in 1990 when i was in high school. Rust holes big enough to pass a grilled cheese through. Glad I passed on it and got an '85 Gbody 442 instead just 2 years later. The olds motors intake manifold tin gasket SUCKS to seal correctly probably why your coolant was evaporating. That plastic chain ended up breaking on my 307" and forced me into a revuild w Engle cam, 403" intake/Qjet amd long tibe hookers. My 307 wpuld run down '87+ 5.0 stangs! stamped rockers suck also, along w the siamesed center exhaust ports. Kinda hard to believe that old design lasted through '87... cool car, love the roofline and tail.
