It would be awesome to see if a can of Restore would improve performance on one of these clapped out engines on your long trips. Like after a few hours of driving or by the time you get home, maybe it would improve the power situation a little.

@@91CavGT5 people confuse the earlier 3.8 with the 3800. they arent the same. the 3.8 had somewhat high internal resistance..... the 3800 was a complete redesign and it was and still is an incredibly tough engine. the 3800 has staggered cylinder banks, the deck was redesigned. i still, to this day have 2 cars with 3800 engines. i wont drive them in the winter. i have a 97 grand prix with a NA 3800 and a 2003 bonneville SSEi with the L67 supercharged

That is not a 3800 as the 3800 did not come out until 3/1987 for FWD cars and the 3800 is a 231V-6 while this RWD POS is a 229 CI V-6 no balance shaft odd firing while the 3800 was even firing after 3/1987. The catch can "fix" was honestly pretty genius... All that was missing was some way to have the oil recurculate back into the engine without needing to stop (maybe even by repurposing the windshield washer motor as an oil injection device, similar to what Deboss garage did in a fairly recent video where he drove a duramax Chevy with a blown head gasket from Texas up to the border). Rigging up something like that probably would have doubled the range between oil refills, which to be fair probably wouldn`t have made much of a difference

There's a reason why I used to run those engines in my GM demo cars. They are damn near indestructible. Buick 3.8 liters especially so. Also go nice in an old CJ series, with a basic rebuild, based trail rigs. Just finished one up last week for a fellow disabled off roader. Show rig. CJ 8, AKA Scrambler. Spiced up 3.8 turbo build adapted to a 4 speed auto out of the rotted out 94 Dakota, and transfer case from the same donor truck. Fellow double leg amputee. Motorcycle accident, double BKA. We use it as a test mule for our prototype adaptive products. He used it as his shop truck. Fun driver,.that performs as good as it looks.

This has to have been one of the best videos you and Angus have put together! I have laughed more in the last hour than I have in months! Thank you guys! It almost makes me want to take a road trip like this-although I don’t have a competent co-pilot to keep the car moving or swap an engine if needed!

I seriously do NOT know what to say. This was a great show, guys -- and that you ended up at DALTON'S was the topping on the cake. I can't wait to see what happens next with this poor Impala. What a beast.

Now I haven’t even driven since my comas began, hence the brain tumor in 91 . But Kevin, your zany adventures and resurrections of these cars I grew up with are AWESOME ! I can’t do anything like this anymore, but watching you is a great way to remember that enjoyment of discovery and rejuvenating !!! Keep the thrill going 👍

Funny how this video gets recommended. I go to my friend's house the other day and he shows me yet another Impala he found on Marketplace. This video is literally every year with his impulse to buy an old Chevy and he has to keep his mom from trying to buy it. She does that hilarious "I ask detailed questions about it and keep looking at it over and over, how much did you pay for it?" interest in old Chevys he buys because she used to drive burnt orange box Chevys back in the day. He told me tons of stories about how his mom back in her fresh from being divorced had all kinds of guys throwing themselves at her and her infamous burnt orange cars

When my 2nd gen Ford Ranger was on its last leg, it would burn 5 quarts of oil within an hours drive and you couldn't see anything behind the truck for atleast a mile due to the smoke screen. Never got in trouble for that, but I always drove on gravel roads. It did eventually give up, but it didn't seize up, just spun the bearings and refused to start. Wound up scrapping it for less than $100 since the body was all rust and dents, the engine was shot, and the transmission was definitely about to give up as well.

Working on our vehicles on my gravel driveway, pulling and reinstalling transmissions, brakes, carbs, etc. until the crack of dawn, dubbing ourselves "Midnight Auto😂! Thanks so much for sharing this very enjoyable video. Can't wait to see the next adventure! God bless.

What an awesome journey pain ridden journey to watch. That little 6 cylinder gave everything it had, gave its life to get them home. Pushed it as far as it can go. Somehow that engine was getting worse oil per gallon than miles per gallon and held on. 😆

That engine deserves a full tear down and rebuild as a reward for outstanding service and loyalty to the owners. I don't think I have ever seen an engine being driven to its absolute limit and still make it to the destination with that little life left in it. Even after you deliberately tried to run it down completely it still had life in it. Please, for the love of all that is holy, honor it by giving it the retirement it deserves. Don't just chuck it on the scrap heap, I beg you.

Also, when I was 19 I was given a 1976 Buick Skylark sedan with an Olds 260 4.3L V8 with a Rochester 2bbl carb that made around 105-110 HP literally, and even though the timing was off, it only had 34,000 miles on it and it would easily maintain 75-90 MPH...eventually, but it would do it. Edit: I was actually able to get it to do a one wheel burnout, but I had to pour tire shine on the tire itself and power brake the hell out of it. However there could be a foot of snow on the entire car, it having been sitting for months, two pumps on the old go pedal, turn the key, and she would fire RIGHT up. Also, the heater would literally make you sweat (after I replaced the heater core). I was even able to make the AC work with a R-134A conversion. I also had to replace the front springs as well as the leaf springs because that car would sag like you wouldn't believe. Thank God it was free because it was crap...😂😂😂
