I love this conversation and @TheFishingNomad, I completely appreciate your sentiment! I don't like A.I. encroaching on my personal life and my hobbies. Now my professional life, totally different story. A.I. has nearly doubled my team's productivity. What's crazy is for "kicks" I recently looked up tank mates for Electric Blue Acura's for a 40 gallon tank. I was just curious what OpenAI would share. I didn't hate the answer, but I just can't rely on A.I. for my fishkeeping hobby. The hobby and the little lives counting on me mean way too much too me. I'll stick with learning from the folks who have lived and breathed their experiences. 😊

Yep! Since AI gets trained on lots of data, the "signal to noise" where people constantly repeat bad information will likely be what the AI "learns", leading to the actual useful information getting lost. I bet that will happen with many hobbies, not just fishkeeping. As far as AI, I'll watch a video with an AI thumbnail (like the previous one) so long as the actual video isn't done by AI and isn't done by robo-voice, even if it was scripted by a human. In rare cases I find AI to enhance videos, such as the ones with scary stories of cryptids where there is no actual footage, and a "talking head" for 20+ minutes without some B-roll usually has me doing something else while listening as background.

The lines between real and AI-generated will soon be so blurred that we will not even be able to tell if the person you've seen in the video is real or AI-generated. I think AI will help to level the KZbin playing field for camera-shy fishkeepers. Now they too can show their tanks and tell their stories without having to show their face.

The issue with AI is that it will always give you an answer, but it is not always a correct answer. When I ask AI something as simple as "When will glo angels be available in Canada?" and the answer is "GloFish Starfire Red Angelfish are now available in Canada! You can find them at various local fish and pet stores, as well as online retailers like Petco, Pet Supplies Plus, and Meijer." Not only are Glo Angels still not available, but even worse, the stores suggested are also not in Canada. AI will always provide an answer, whether real, fake or imagined.

I really wish AI would've stayed solely in the computer science field. It's just too unpredictable. Google quickly took one of its AI tools off web searches when its assistant was answering "how do you cook spaghetti with gasoline" with an actual recipe. It's a hilarious story, but imagine "you can fit about 50 goldfish in a 5 gallon salt water tank" being taken seriously as we become more blindly reliant on it.

I use AI to write descriptions of the fish I sell online. Usually, the content it creates is pretty crappy but it does serve as a good baseline for me to edit for the final text. During my use of AI, I have noticed that it 'mostly' gets the information correct, when it has the information to give me. However, about 30% of the time, it lacks enough information to write me a sufficient boilerplate for a species, and just spits out pretty vague text. I seriously doubt AI will impact fish keeping knowledge unless it gets to a point where what it is learning from us is what we are learning from it. But, in the end, until AI can go out and attend a fish conference, or join a local fish club and talk to other fish keepers in order to share experiences, the knowledge it creates will be mostly accumulation and regurgitation. Could this be of use to others? Sure, sometimes. But, AI cannot experience the hobby in the same way it cannot experience pain or joy or fear, or understand the calm one feels when petting a dog, or the joy one feels when their kid if born. So it will never be a 100% authoritative , primary source for the information that fish keepers want. We will, so long as we are the only ones having the genuine experiences.

I actually like it when content creators use AI pictures and animations to illustrate their work, but I don’t like it when it is the content and not used to accent the content. I tend to like videos around 10-20 minutes. You guys make great content 😊

Ai that is clearly Ai, like the ones you generate, is awesome because we clearly notice its not natural. The problem starts arising when creators use AI to decieve their audiences by trying to make it seemless in their content I.E. Chat GPT to make scripts.

When I first started up my aquarium a year ago after being out of the hobby for decades, I scoured KZbin and forums for information that wasn't available back in the day. I also tried using ChatGPT, and quickly realized some of the information I was getting did not jibe with the content I was getting from Prime Time Aquatics and others. It didn't take long for me to figure out that ChatGPT was wrong about much of what it was telling me. I would challenge the AI with the correct information, and it would tell me I was right and apologize for the incorrect answer. In fact, in many cases, the AI would create information out of whole cloth, with not an iota of evidence, truth or accuracy. I have found this to be the case with every other subject I tested against it. Of course, there are channels with folks who also don't know what they're talking about, but crosschecking against other channels and forums usually ferrets them out. AI is consistently wrong and not ready for prime time... (just realized I made a pun there) and as far as I'm concerned, never will be. Give me people who have experienced and tested what they're telling me.

I'm not a fan of the AI scripts or directions..... but I actually love the idea of more AI translated videos on KZbin so that the different countries can share information with more ease. I feel like there's a way for us to use the tools without replacing the people.

Overall I am opposed to AI content I think the pictures look cartoonish, I also feel as time goes on AI will be abused and used as a way to spread a one sided narrative people as a hole are forgetting how to do the research needed in order to find the information they need. It has become to ease to just click a button and have something pop up on the screen and take that information as fact. People need to go back and do their own research and get information from multiple sources, that way you can form your own opinion and not just blindly accept what you are being told as being told as absolute fact

Wow! I didn’t even know this was a thing but I do remember a few weeks ago there was a video with a robotic voice and incorrect information (I knew because it was a list of fish species which were pictured and some were named the wrong species, such as “mollys”. My comment was something like “The molly is listed as a platy. Did ai make this video or something?”

I don't care about thumbnails. I think of thumbnails as packaging, and I don't think that the box something comes in (unless it's way, way out of line) is much of a reflection of the item itself. As for AI in general, there are things that I would have said "never" about 10 years ago, and a whole lot of things 20 years ago, that I do now. I try not to say never as often as I might have in the past. If I had to make a prediction, AI generated content won't supplant manually generated stuff, I think they'll just be different categories.

I would not watch an AI video but have no problem with AI thumbnails. I can’t tell the difference between a digital image created by a person and one created by AI until someone goes “that’s AI.” Interestingly, I have played around with stocking ideas using chatGPT just to see what it pumps out. A lot of times it’s on the mark and pulls good advice off the web about temperaments, appropriate tank sizes etc. Other times it contradicts what I’ve heard trusted sources say or what I’ve read in blogs. In that way you have to be careful. It is scary to think someday you’ll be watching a video thinking it’s a real person (sounds real, looks real) but it’s AI. Would rather have the guidance of an actual person than a bot for sure.

I really liked your video, and I agree with many things you said. Something I really hate is the 100% AI videos that are usually made purely for monetizing. If you go on shorts you will see these “fun facts” videos many of which made by AI. I don’t think this is the right use of AI, but I do think that use of AI such as your thumbnail was an alright use. Also like you and many said the AI voice is so creepy.

I feel AI will diminish the quality of videos, not from the perspective of offering factual data, but from the "emotional connect" perspective. It may offer better videographed and informative stuff, but in my view, it will give that "user's manual" type formal and parched vibes. I would definitely prefer the channels with a human element, with minor oversights, improvisations and a human touch. Where AI would shine in the next decade in fishkeeping, will be automation of home aquarium maintenance.

I do not want it replacing creators etc. Our son is in the technology world and one of his friends inside the AI intelligence creation and advancement has told him that everyone in the deep know is getting really worried because it has taken itself beyond what was intended. It is now creating its own intelligence and it’s very scary what could happen.

AI pics are fun--even entertaining. I gravitate towards channels I find reputable. I hate the videos that scroll words and have no one talking, so I would probably go crazy listening to AI. Yes and no, if you let KZbin design the Ai everyone will be miserable and broke in weeks 😂. But no I agree with how you designed the thumbnail for your video, Ai in that sense is a tool. A great comparison is in one of mark trenonti’s new song, the mother, the earth and I. The entire video minus marks playing was ai generated and even goes on to say in an interview, it’s a tool, if I were to rely on a graphic design team, it would take months and years to create and what can be done with access to a credit card is pennies to what it would cost. Now I do feel for those graphic designers but if you watch that video he didn’t edit anything, and at times you can see things maybe it would easier to read without so that’s where they still play a role. Back to fish keeping though, I can see great potential especially for automated systems. Just think of the potential for monitoring hygiene, could save hundreds in water bills. Fish ailments can save entire tankssss from a simple case of ick with likely documentation of each fish affected. I could go on but I just hope Elon musk helps design it 😂, stay happy and healthy my friend!

I’m like you - if a video is narrated by AI, I generally click away. I have worked with AI a little to come up with ideas, words list, outlines, etc., but everything has to be checked and edited. AI is only as good as the original sources. The images are so good now that on some I think we would be hard pressed to tell if it’s an unedited photo or AI. I like a person talking to me - pimples and all 😂 I like opposing views so I can hear multiple ideas.

For me, personally, AI will have some effect but not much in terms of YT and how I get my information. Like you, Jason, I prefer getting my content from real people. Ocassionally I may watch a generic YT vid but usually I shy away from those generic bot like produced content. However, I think what people didn't like about your AI thumbnail is that it looks exactly like a generic bot like production. A cartoon type fish thumbnail I would assume is targeted towards kids or newbies or someone of that mindset new to the hobby. Perhaps an AI generated "reality" version of fish for thumbnails might work. But it wil depend on how it's presented. Otherwise keep up the good work and don't turn into a bot! Lol!

Artificial Intelligence is a misnomer. It really is Machine generated content. Life happens through us, not to us. There is no "Intelligence out there" as it is presented. The intelligence always comes from within the observer. Projection makes Perception. This may be a difficult for some to grasp, I've been studying this all my adult life ~40yrs. So "AI" is just a tool like any other, it's not magic as some would have us believe. I do prefer the hobbyists direct presentation most of the time, though Machine Generated content has it's place. Use it as a tool, just don't give it a life of its own.

Yesterday I made the mistake of clicking on an A.I. thumbnail of a small RV, "New for 2025 from Kia". I was then bombarded with A.I. videos of cars, trucks, campers, electric motorcycles and RV's. All non existent and never going to exist. I don't think A.I. fish videos would be a good thing. You'd never know what the fish or plants really looked like, it's already bad enough with people playing with the color saturation.

Hard no for me, and it's mostly about ethics. Content made by generative AI is always theft because it doesn't come from nowhere. That's the issue with your thumbnails (no blame from me !), it's just a mix of different painting/photos/etc made by actual artists that are used without their permission to train the AI that WILL make them lose their job. And you have a lot of pretty fish and aquascapes to use anyway ! In the case of AI fish videos, since you're one of the biggest content creator on youtube about this subject, it's going to massively steal in an instant what you took years to create. And other KZbin fishkeepers' content too. I really hate this idea. On a different matter, since there are thousands of different opinions about fishkeeping online that contradict each others a lot, and with how wrong ChatGPT is known to be very often, I really don't want to know the result of a begginer asking it if he can put shrimp with his betta :(

Ai generated thumbnails aren't even close to being a dealbreaker for me but I do prefer thumbnails that appear handmade. I do think Ai has a legitimate place in content creation and as long as it stays in that lane it's good. I personally think that lane is acting as a brainstorming aid. Do you save time when you let the Ai write a portion of the script for you? Yes. But you're losing that personal touch that I think people are starting to crave now that the internet has been flooded by artificially generated writing.

I will always skip over videos that have appearance of being click bait, which includes AI thumbnails. I also close out videos with the AI narrator. I watch to learn and get inspiration directly from person (and also support that person)…not AI.

I want commentary and input from people who have hands-on experience, and discuss the subtle points of whatever the subject is. I've been given tons of bad advice from people in big-box pet stores. When you blend all that type of information, how will we know where the AI got its information? How much of it is just bad information? No AI for me. I shut it down immediately. (The thumbnail is okay, but I don't love it). I have raised horses in the past. My facebook feed is innundated with AI horse pictures and people gushing over what beautiful animals they are, even though they can never exist in real life. I hate it. In the end, ignorant people will be demanding fancier, more perfect, exotic animals, and won't be content with the beautiful creatures around us.

Even movie summary or short version videos… no… that is parasitising other people work… if someone gives a feedback, that is a different thing… imagines do not bother me… This outcome means only 1 thing: AI will get better so a human will not be able to tell the difference… Will AI change fish keeping? It definitely will. It will change every area of human life. It will allow people to be lazier and think less… do you remember the days you had to use maps to travel? I believe AI would be helpful more than harmful in the fish keeping hobby and the fish keeping community. Bots are already here and not going away. What's not here is an AI generated program that utilizes facts to help solve problems from just beginning fish keepers to seasoned fish keepers in the palm of your hand. AI only knows what it knows. In person communities could grow with AI teaching or hold the hands of newcomers getting started. Just a thought.

It sounds horrible. Id much rather know I’m looking at a real tank with personal experience than risking getting a hodge podge of info that might not work together properly. To much room for error in this hobby to have things summarized and have it accurate.

I won't watch AI generated content. I am here to support human content creators. However, the thumbnail images do not bother me. I personally thought the thumbnail you used was cute.

I think it'll eventually destroy my willingness to click on videos from your channel if you keep it up. Normally I pay no attention at all to videos with (clearly) AI-generated thumbnails because they're usually uninteresting to me. 👍

Robotic voices are the worst. Thumbnails are supposed to grab your attention. Doesn't bother me. Info from AI, sketchy.

So much of fish keeping is nuanced with no one "right" answer. People have different tap water parameters and desire different outcomes. A program trying to aggregate a consensus on how to keep fish is gong to ruin into problems discerning a "right" answer with all the conflicting opinions and methods floating around the internet. All this to say, nope, I wouldn't trust AI content for fish keeping.

It's a tool nothing more nothing less nothing else. To be Anti AI is exactly the same as being anti-technology. What I do think is like any tool It's all about how it's used. For instance you used it to create a thumbnail. As long as it's used to assist true creativity and actual information it's just the natural evolution of technology. To your point of have 100% AI generated content I don't think fish keeping is the place for that because you need to see the results you can reasonably expect but AI can be used to make production values better.

I don't mind and AI generated thumbnail since YT views like a catchy thumbnail. But like you if the content is AI generated I will click off. I don't trust the information is accurate and may not have been checked as being correct. All too often I'll do a search for information and come across an article that was AI generated and it repeats itself several times and contradicts it's statement in the next paragraph. I don't know if there is a way to turn off AI responses in a google search but I would surely turn that off if possible. My tanks are real and I want to see real examples in a video, not a fantasy world.
