Will likes his prof right. I think its absurd people even have to defend that gerry is not a villain. He cares about will exploring his highest potential. He is the one who found him sean , he found him period. Maybe he does not get all the psychological stuff & he knows that so he busts his ass going though 5 drs till he gets to sean. Gerry wants the best for will.

@@locutus99: I believe it would be possible to find a better balance of both, whereas Gerald seems to skew that balance a bit more towards seeing Will more as a means to an end. It's always tempting when you find a "super-person" that you want to squeeze them for all it's worth; SMBC made a comic about that once, how using Superman's powers most efficiently would be to have him constantly power a generator to give abundant energy to everyone on the planet. However, I think the best approach in this case by Gerald would be to simply acknowledge that you're probably not going to "solve" all of mathematics in your lifetime anyway, and rather be grateful for every advancement and problem Will helps to solve out of his own desire to further the field of mathematics, rather than "squeeze" him for his abilities. I agree with the original comment, though, I wouldn't regard Gerald as a villain at all, that would be taking it too far. There aren't really any villains in this movie, not even Clark, the "Harvard bully", should really be regarded as such, as he's trying his best in his own way and isn't fully aware of what he's doing, nor does he fully grasp that there are people whose intelligence strongly outguns his own (like Will), but their encounter obviously has a marked effect on him; if anything, Will comes off slightly villainous himself when showing off after he gets Skylar's number.

Lmao. Not really. You don't pat equals on the head. He also doesn't send him to Robin to help him; it was a legal requirement by the judge. And he goes out of his way to almost sabotage the therapy too. Finally, EQ is a myth that there is no scientific basis for.

Well yes and no. He's also incredibly narcissistic and is trying to use Will to honor himself vicariously. Like the ambition is good for Will and he does need a mentor here. Working on the clinical team of a juvenile treatment center for the past 5 years, I cringe so hard at the arm around the shoulder and head pat. It’s what we all want to accomplish - creating a positive, grounding parental relationship that helps make up for the lack of it they’ve had - but anytime things progress this fast, you know the reactive attachment storm is coming. Their initial desire for attachment is met with a fear of abandonment, abuse, and a loss of autonomy. Far better to take it slow, model consistency through smaller ups and downs, and build up trust before you build up the emotional connection imo. Robin William’s character does a great job of this. He also sets firm boundaries which helps Will understand that living life without your guard up doesn’t make you helpless, and that vulnerability is essential to experiencing the best that life has to offer.

I've worked with juveniles myself. I understand that you have to progress in the attachment. But we do form these attachments sometimes in slices. This math attachment doesn't include all the complexities of a wholistic relationship, Will feels comfortable because he's adept with no fear of failure, unlike with the psychologist (Robin Williams). I'm sure you've experienced this. You may bond with a guy over basketball but it doesn't mean you can be his history teacher, or a friend he'll tell family troubles to.

@@easystreet303 I'm such a nerd, but math is like super exciting to me. I majored in it so I feel pretty confident in saying that they are messing with the probability of constant k happening under the conditions that each side of those triangles are equivalent. When he did K-1 to the fourth power it canceled out the other K-1's because it becomes their equivalent. They aren't done with the problem either, they were just trying to find the right formula so they can plug and chug in the added values. Sorry, I just really needed to talk about it. It sounds a helluva lot more complicated than it actually is though. At the end of the day, it's just algebra but with different variables.

Complicated formulas he would apply to funny stories and made you remember them and how to use them and apply them...he used to visually explain the concept of a formula and what it means to the equation...he was brilliant... Students would feel ashamed of not knowing stuff because he explained it in such a simple way....he had the best student statisfaction ratings out of all professors but also had to deal with people who did not understand his concept of teaching...and would get in trouble with paretns etc...today there is no way ge would be allowed to teach, because of his style but it was enjoyable attenting his classes. I could not stany techers who would just blurt out formulas and be "standard" teachers... They were trying to simply the problem by making the solution only be at the top. They do it by subtracting the k^2, k-1, and k-2 from the bottom to put them at top and make the bottom 1 from cancelling, hence the lines across them. k^3-k^2=k^1 to put on top so it cancels the k^2 at bottom making it 1. (k-1)^3 - (k-1)^2 = (k-1) to put on top cancelling the k-1 from bottom making it also 1. Lastly, when Will put in the (k-2)^6, it made the (k-2)^2 go from the bottom to top making it (k-2)^4 making the k-2^2 cancel or making it 1.

Sorry, but Louis CK totally ruined this movie for me. I can't not see Matt Damon writing these scenes.
