Good info! My Kregg pocket hole jig is the original K2 with the aluminum body, purchased in the early 90's as a kit and has served me very well for many years. My "pocket rocket" that came with the kit broke about a year ago so I notified Kregg of the failure (for safety reasons) and to my amazement, they sent me a free replacement without hesitation. The Kregg pocket hole screw is the first screw I experienced that was truly engineered to work with the system. With an extremely sharp point, the drill bit style cutting point, wide sharp threads around a thin shaft, smooth upper section of the shaft and the flat washer head, they meet a lot of criteria. Kregg screws are a staple in my workshop that I don't want to be caught without, as I use them for many other purposes. The only problem with the old K2 system is that it works so well and so durable. I really can't justify spending the money to upgrade to the K5 version. Kregg should offer a "trade-up" incentive.

I bought a simple Kreg jig hole system with the 2 holes and clamp for about 30-40$ a couple years ago on black friday and only recently put effort into using it and I have to say it is one of my favorite wood working tools. Budget has a huge impact on my tool buying and I get how people are concerned with the Kreg screws price. I have found Spax and grk washer/wafer head screws work wonderfully and for 2by material I recommend 2 inch size screws. I trust Steve for so many recommendations when it comes to woodworking. I cant afford everything but I am putting together my tools one piece at a time.

I've used deck screws with good success and they are self tapping as well. Had to buy a long driver bit though to reach down into the pocket. They have a star head and hold the screw on to some extent as you point out the Kreg screws do. Don't really know which I prefer, and don't know how the cost compares though the deck screws aren't exactly cheap either. But they are a viable alternative that I've used with good success. That being said, I have used pocket hole joinery in some of my projects, but it's definitely not my first choice even though one of my videos was about using it for the first time.

I have used The pocket hole system on many projects and find it very good for creating a strong joint. I have also used walnut plugs on oak projects and they create a nice visual aesthetic to the sometimes bland corners on some projects. Once lacquered of course. And yes use the Kreg Screws and glue. They make joining so much easier.

To answer Steve Ramsey's question about a metric version of the Kreg K3: the answer is yes. I purchased a Kreg K3 kit on the internet from a Germany based dealer and I received a Kreg K3 kit which display both units (imperial and metric). This is very welll designed and manufactured product. It is superior to the Wolfcraft version even thought it is a little more costly. By the way congratulations for your videos, I really like them. I made my first pocket hole project this weekend. A combination toy box / bookcase for my grandson. Turned out great with about 4 hours labor. You have to stop and think about the placement of the screws when building furniture. But I was able to build it completely without any screw holes on the outside of the furniture. I am going to use a stainable wood filler. I'm using a stain and wood filler from the same manufacturer, so hopefully using their instructions I will get good results. I used the Kreg screws and I must say they were easy to use with their "Robertson/Square Drive" heads. Just make sure to back down on the torque value on the screw driving drill so you don't drive them in too far.
@keithkelley75128 жыл бұрын
Enjoy your videos. I have been using pocket holes for years and it worksgreat. You do not need the "special" screws. I normally use drywall screwsand have had very good results. I built a captains bed for my son many yearsago with drawers, doors and many structural panels which he has 'muscled"around his room many times and the bed is still tight and strong. I have assembled many things with this system and have never needed a measuringsystem "metric or otherwise": just do it. It does not replace mortise and tenon,dovetails or other traditional joinery; it is very good for what it is intended.just be sure to "clamp" before joining as (physics) the wood will creep asyou screw the pieces together.

Having used the Pocket Hole Joinery method, I use #8 flathead wood screws with a #2 Robertson drive. I've never had a problem running the screws in with a drill and the final tightening by hand whether they're 3/4" or 4". With soft woods, I omit the pilot hole and run the screw in directly.

I live in the UK and picked up the R3 jig for about £30, it does come with a metric conversion chart but you really are only likely to set it to 3\4" as that converts to 18mm which is about the most common size for s4s timber. The R3 is great for occasional use but I do hope to upgrade to a K4 or 5 when I can afford to.
@danburch99898 жыл бұрын
For those who have problems with metrics (like me) and no conversion chart, I use the number 6 to give me APPROXIMATE inch to metric conversions for SMALL measurments. 1/4" = 6mm. I stress APPROXIMATE. Actually, it's 6.25 but I just drop the .25. 3/4" would be about 18mm (actually 18.75). 2" would be 48mm (actually 50.8mm). But it's close enough for this type of work. The larger thickness or length, the larger the error. 2.8mm is just shy of 1/8". I don't like to use dowels; too hard to for me to get the alignment right. I like the Kreg jig and biscuit joinery best. I made three chair side tables using the Kreg system. I like your videos for sure.

Mango he’s clearly delusional. Any system that is a wholly base 10 system (ie. metric, 1000mm = 100cm = 1m = 0.001km) will be far more simple to use than any system with various or random bases (ie. imperial 36in = 3ft = 1yd = ... who bloody knows what fraction of a mile that equals)

Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a Kreg R3 that allowed me to begin pocket hole joinery for a reasonable price. Cabinet screws seem to work about as well as Kreg screws. However, the trick is finding a skinny drive extension so that you can drive it all the way into the hole...especially if joining 2x4's. The head was a T-20 or 25 depending on the screw size. it might have save a few dollars. Probably worth the small premium to just stick with Kreg screws.

Hi Steve - I'm in South Africa. Over here Kreg comes in imperial only. We mainly work with metric. So Kreg included a metric conversion table with the Kreg set I bought. It seems therefore that that would be the closest Kreg would come to metric.

One important factor regarding the screws: On the Kreg screw the threads end before the head of the screw. This allows the screw to freely spin in the pocket hole pulling it tight to the other board. A fully threaded screw can push the two pieces apart until the pocket hole strips out. Hopefully it hasn't driven through or split your wood by then...

Hey Steve, as for the glue/no glue conundrum, as always we have to look to our friend Matthias Wandel. On 3/3/15 he did a test to answer this question. GREAT follow-up and thanks. I do like your method of setting the bit depth - VERY EASY!!
@brh40158 жыл бұрын
+Sebastopolmark He only did this test because people insisted on it although the outcome of this test was already clear. Glue does not help with peak strength of the joint, which is what his test is designed to measure. Glue can help to stop a screw working itself loose over the years.

Look into the porter cable jig . More expensive but makes the Kreg look and function like a child's toy . (you set this solid unit on a surface , set the drill collar one time for all boards , set the clamp one time for each thickness (simple release and reclamp with one hand), adjust the hole spacing with curl knob read the screw recommendation on jig side (auto ) and more . This in combination with dado cuts eliminates gluing on cabinet frames .

Here's handy tip, relevant to all timber screws: Dip the screw all the way into the glue bottle just before driving it in - that way the broken timber fibres cut by the thread are reinforced when the glue dries. _But this is only a theory._ I myself have never actually tested the glued-screw joint to destruction and compared this with unglued screws. I hope someone does properly test it someday so I know for sure...

I'd like to mention something about the use of fillers or plugs to cap the holes. If it's a piece you may need to take apart at a later time plugs are very desirable over the use of fillers. Plugs can be painted or stained to match a piece and still be accessible for removal if you ever need to say move a large piece that needs a side taken off. Auto-body and wood fillers would have to be dug out at risk of damaging your piece. Just a tip for those that sometimes do as I, and put the cart before the horse when planning out their projects. lol

@emiliofhg8 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I think the most important feature for pocket hole screws is their clamping capacity. The clamping action can be achieved in two ways (1) the screws should have a partially threaded shank or (2) the external diameter of the thread should be equal or lower than the diameter of the thinner portion of the Kreg drill bit. I prefer option 1 because with option 2 you need to align the screw to the drilled hole with higher precision.

Great video once again. I learn a lot. Just actually need to put all of the advice into practice. If only my table saw wasn't a piece of junk!

What I do to fill the holes when I do things like this is to mix the saw dust from the boards I'm cutting with some wood glue. Basically I fill the hole 3/4 of the way with wood glue, then pack it as tight as possible with the sawdust. Sometimes I'll ad a bit more glue on the top. It tends to stain a little bit darker, but for the most part it's not too noticeable once it's finished. If anything people mistake it for a dowel joint and I don't mind it. For the most part it's best to drill that pocket hole from the inside of the piece to avoid it being visible all together.

What are the different manufacturers of pocket screws? I've been searching google but cant seem to find a definitive answer. I know obviously Kreg looks like the go to choice, but has anyone experience with other pocket hole screws while using the Kreg pocket joinery?

I can't believe you didn't show up in my suggested stuff sooner. Great video, great humor. Liked and subscribed.

If you don't glue it the two boards can shift in relation to each other later on. If they are supposed to be flush that can be a big deal. But if it's something for the shop I never glue it so it's easy to take it apart later.

+krtwood In my experience screw only joints wobble themselves loose by developing more and more play every time the joint is stressed by load or wood movement. Might be a non issue in man made materials or really hard woods.

A trick I learned in woodshop way back in high school. Gather some saw dust from the same wood that you are using. Mix that saw dust with some wood glue and turn it into a paste. Use that to fill in your holes.

self tapping pole barn screws. Has a hex head that fits any quick change drill bit holder, self tapping, and has a washer built in. .

What if you have to pull out the screws, then reassemble? Does that weaken the join?

Makes sense kreg doesn't really offer a metric version since they are an American company and headquartered in Iowa. ( Based on a small rural town which is another good reason to purchase from them). I did however have a conversion chart with my K3 jig
