It is real simple, all the pressure is going to escape through the weakest point, which is always going to be your finger. Even if the gun banana peels, you are not going to have a hand left.
@spvillano2 ай бұрын
That's why I've always recommended epoxy. Slow cure being the best. Now, arranging that, that's up to the one getting in front of the gun. A nice tungsten ice pick would do, you'd not get blasted, just an ice pick propelled up the inside of your hand and forearm. Hardened steel lag bolt, perhaps? I'm sure they'll patiently wait. Seriously though, what was historically effective was spiking the barrels of the weapons. Not a facing down a muzzle activity, but it did effectively kill the weapon throughout history. Of course, fingers ain't spikes.

even if it didnt, the reason the gun blows up is because it cannot withstand the pressure. if you compare the pressure that your finger can withstand vs a metal pipe, youd realise pretty quickly that you would probably prefer getting shot transversely to having your hand rupture from the pressure and then have the bullet pass right through the exploding part of your hand anyway and possibly all the way up your arm.

A better example of a tank barrel blowing up is the German Tiger. The 88mm barrel was too big and powerful for a tank without some serious engineering. The result was a gun without equal at the time, but it came with a heavy burden: it had to be maintained with meticulous care. A dirty barrel could cause a backfire and blow the turret off. Due to their engineering, there was very little room for dirt in a Tiger 88, compared to other tanks not often responsible for blowing themselves up. I'm looking through my books and can't find exact details on how dirty was "dirty," but the crews were told if they were in doubt, don't fire because there was no room for error.

Years ago, my father sat on a jury hearing a lawsuit brought to court by a farmer who lost his thumb when a shotgun exploded. The farmer had accidentally mixed some 20 gauge shells into his 12 gauge shells. The 20 gauge went down into the barrel, blocking the barrel. A 12 gauge shell was then loaded behind it, causing the barrel to have a piece blown out of the barrel where the farmers' left hand was holding the shotgun when it was fired. The jury found the defendants not liable due to the negligence of the farmer not keeping his shotgun shells properly separated. ALWAYS, ALWAYS make sure you are loading the proper ammunition in ANY firearm! Your safety, health, and maybe even your life depend on your due diligence on this matter !

My local military museum has a large caliber WW2 anti-aircraft gun with a banana peeled barrel. The story was the crew had to abandon it during a retreat. Rather than let it fall into enemy hands they stuffed an entire HE shell back-to-front in the end of the barrel, loaded another HE shell into the breach, stood back and pulled the lanyard. Later when they retook the position they retrieved the gun which had been left untouched by the enemy.

It's a little bit more complex than that. What the mode of failure ends up being depends on many factors such as how much powder is in the cartridge, what the normal operating pressures are, the design of the firearm itself especially affecting the strength of the action and barrel, and how far down the barrel the obstruction in the barrel is. If the blockage is close enough to the chamber end where the barrel is generally thicker, it can result in a far more catastrophic failure event where either the barrel splits from the chamber end or the locking mechanism itself that was supposed to support the back end of the cartridge fails. They are usually far more violent and hazardous to the shooter because usually they happen to even higher pressures.
@richardkominek22442 ай бұрын
If you shoot a gun with the barrel partially submerged in water it will not do the banana peel effect, but it would completly ''Disassemble'' so to say.

The biggest threat is a squib round. I've been at a shooting range twice when a semi-auto pistol exploded due to squibs. The barrel didn't explode, the gas escaped at the breach, damaging the slide around the ejection port and the top of the frame. Most pistols calibers have much higher pressures than shotguns, so the barrels are thicker and stronger. I had my own squib once, by not putting the powder load in a hand loaded round. Fortunately, the primer barely put the bullet into the rifling and 220gr 300BLK bullets are very long, so the next round could not chamber, and I didn't fire a second round, until I cleared the squib.

Not surprising this could happen to tanks. Not just from crappy terrain/mud, but also shots hitting and compromising the turret or barrel sufficiently. A hit making the barrel even slightly too narrow (like the example with the sherman in the video) would be expected now and then. Wouldn't surprise me if issues with manufacture caused some % of them too, or too much expansion with overheating causing the barrel to warp a bit (either due to manufacturing issues with the steel or maybe improper use).

I will say that it depends but if you are talking about practical plugs that are used in real tank cannons to stop dust and other stuff from getting into the barrel they can be shot through though it might destabilise the shot but I think it works even with high explosive shells. It depends on the application. A finger or hand won't stand a chance. A rock? Depends on the round or shell. Armor Piercing (AP), Armor Piercing Incendiary (AP-I), and other derivatives will blast through the rock. High Explosive, on the other hand, might (and I stress the word might, due to the variables involved in the chances of this happening, including rock composition, weapon size, bullet/shell age, muzzle velocity, etc) prematurely detonate on contact, destroying the barrel and/or breech in the process. It is incredibly unlikely, and I do not recommend putting any theories like this to the test because experiments with firearms and large caliber guns are extremely dangerous to anyone without experience, but I'm sure it can happen under the right circumstances. Edit: Just finished watching the video. While it did touch on cannons as I had hoped, it didn't touch on Indy's creative "rock" method (as in, using rocks that leave imperfect or incomplete seals) as I was talking about in my comment. I hope that Debunked can give his thoughts, either in a reply to this comment or a follow up video.

This completely ignores pressures and bore obstructions. Handguns and shotguns are low pressure cartridges. Rifles on the other hand have been known to explode with even minor bore obstructions like water in the barrel. Damage to the obstructor is a given, but at rifle pressures, gas simply can't get out of the way in the time scales involved and it can rupture.

I watched the episode's myth buster when they tested the cartoon myth of plugging the end of a gun barrel with a finger so I already know it wouldn't make the gun explode but I was wondering about the tank gun barrel.
@Wised10003 ай бұрын
Anyone that has served in the armed forces can attest to exploding barrels. The obstruction does not necessarily have to block the barrel all by itself. In a riffle for example, all it has to do is slightly deflect the bullet in the barrel and cause the bullet to lodge into the metal thus blocking the bore. On the M16 this is not a very rare issue. The entire barrel proximal to the obstruction will split apart all the way to the chamber. Luckily in most instances injuries are small or non existent aside from the shock of the weapon exploding in your face! Regarding the finger in the gun. A patently stupid idea. HOWEVER... All semiautomatic that have a slide that rides over the barrel (virtually every semi except the WW2 German Luger) can be prevented from firing by pushing back on the front of the gun. Any rearward movement of the slide disengages the firing mechanism. Please don't try this at home with a bullet, however, you can try to dry fire your gun while pushing the slide slightly to prove the point.
@randomdude45052 ай бұрын

2015 for that Demolition Ranch video? And i remember very specifically when that video came out. How time flies

Yeah, I wouldn't try to obstruct a gun barrel with any of my extremities, however a barrel obstruction isn't a good thing.

12:22 Man, that panzer is firing the entire shell casing with the shot! I'm pretty sure THEIR barrel should have exploded from however they managed to load 2 rounds into it (they had to load 2 in order fire the first entire casing)!

Unless you're Superman or some Kryptonian or something, of course human flesh and bone are too soft to cause any gun any damage by just putting a finger inside the barrel, obviously... Thanks!

This is the reason why the US military requires that all firearms be cleaned when they are discharged or put through mud, snow, or water, etc.
@nonameuser83003 күн бұрын
yes, it will make it explode. ur finger will break into many species where blood, muscle and bone fragments would fly 360 everywhere

Can you do a video about calling the fire department to get cats down from trees?

Imagine being one of those mfers who picks up a gun to feel a sense of power, when all it takes it a bit of dirt or a squib load to make your own power betray you. This is why you don't become obsessed with tools like that.

If you poked a long & close-fitting tungsten rod into the barrel, it WOULD explode the gun, but it is highly unlikely that you will have one handy. A barrel block must be DENSE and MASSIVE to work.
@SofaKingShit3 ай бұрын
If the barrel block needs to be massive couldn't we simply ask your mom?

Without watching, my gut reading: Your finger is doomed. It is still the path of least resistance. If you jammed up a tank barrel with rocks, though, then it depends greatly on what sort of round is being fired. Highly likely that SOMETHING'S gonna emerge but the barrel may be seriously damaged too.
